DGPT: 2020 The Preserve Championship July 3-5

It is interesting that there are ZERO holes for MPO with lengths between 427' and 666'. They are all below 427' or above 666' That seems like a huge gap in distance to not be represented. I would assume it has to do with the elusive PAR of holes. 500-600' holes are often quite difficult par 3's but very easy 4's for the top pros.

Still, I would like to see some holes where a (perhaps risky) bomber throw combined with a nice circle two putt would pick up a stroke on the competition. Whether its eagle vs birdie or birdie vs par is irrelevant. Seems very few of the holes here offer any scoring separation beyond just a bad throw or missed C1 putt...

One thing I will say for this course, it sure makes for a log jam at the top. The first round leaders may not be in the top10 when they teeoff. I do think scoring separation is a good thing, but its also fun to have an event here and there where 20 guys might have a chance to win on the back9 tomorrow...

I will say not having stupid OB ropes everywhere is refreshing. I could see even a few more feet of distance added to a few holes though. 18 could be pushed back 50 feet, along with a couple par 3's which are 295-330, the tunnel shot on 17 would be nicer at 330. The other par 4 which Eagle rolled into birdie range could go back to 750-800. Just to make it not so much, birdie or die. But other then that the course looks to play fair. A bit more distance and the scores would drop a couple shots.

This was a decision made Day 1. During the opening week, as I crossed paths with him on the course, I asked him if he was going to add OB like sand bunkers or unmowed grass to tighten it up - aside for some mandos, he said that he was not going to manufacture anything.

The course(s) need a few things

Thanks for your good ideas. I'm glad people around there think the course is far from done. So much potential, but the pros seem to be creaming it.

I was thinking the same about that big hill. put a few pins 40' up onto the hill he he has access to it.

I disagree. I think this is good design. There have been some people get eagle opportunities on holes that have no business being eagled. Making holes in the "in-between" range for par is silly. If the vast majority of the field (75%+) that matters (excluding those that have no chance of cashing to begin with) gets the same score, it's probably a bad hole, and that's often what happens with holes that distance.

I don't think distance is the problem on the 4s and 5s. It's the wide open airways for them. There's almost no risk to blast one out when the fairway is over 100' wide.

Personally I would add a little on some holes. I think most are good though. For instance Simon can hyzer/hyzer on 18. He doesn't even have to risk going into the water. At 980, maybe he has to take some hyzer off and other guys will have to full flex to get into eagle range.

As much as I like seeing Eagle roll it into eagle range for birdie on a 650 foot par 4, having it play 800 and finsh back into the woods would make it even tougher on avg and a tougher birdie. It's almost a gimme birdie. 650 and wide fairway is a gimme for these top pro's.

The shorter par 3's would be awesome back 50 feet as well like I mentioned. But yes, most of the holes are designed really well. I would just toughen it up just a bit more for more scoring seperation.

Fun card to watch, complete with Napolean Dynamite.
Eagle's 750 ft roller was psick. ...and #11 may have been even better.
Kevin's roller was sweet too.

Too bad KJ caught a few bad breaks... was hoping he could stay close to the leaders.

This course is set up for some low scores.
