I have some downtime, so I will jump in some of this craziness.
I believe Mountaingoat is climbing up the wrong hill on this one as well. It appears that he has a personal biases towards ( or away from ) cannabis and how it is stunting the growth of DG. I think it was on Real Sports with Bryant Gumball, when they recently did a story on how drugged out the NFL was on prescriptions and how there is a push by players to allow the (nonphysical enhancing drug ) of cannabis to be used SINCE a large percent (maybe 70% ) of current players being recruited into the NFL use it anyway. People have already mention NBA etc… it IS in our mainstream sports. We just don't see it.
Also does anyone remember Michael Phelps with a bong in hand? Here is a recent article from April 2014 (
http://baltimore.cbslocal.com/2014/...sh-as-michael-phelps-emerges-from-retirement/ ) which headline reads: Sponsors Expected To Score Big As Michael Phelps Emerges From Retirement. Uhm… they are not running from him. And we are taking about swimming. If swimming can make it, with weed and all… so can DG.
Should players smoke anything during tournaments or drinking on televised sports? I don't believe so. But the collective mindset of cannabis is changing quickly in this country. And if we go by the (proven) fact that cannabis is less harmful and less (read: non) addicting than prescriptions and alcohol… then how does baseball, football, and basketball match up? Meaning: How many Super Bowl ads have to do with Budweiser and Viagra (granted the blue pill are not physically addicting, but can cause priapism!!! So be careful )
So if enough people watch DG, the sponsors can be anything. Does Buick build golf clubs? If enough people watch it, then Kleenex will buy a timeslot.
However, some other companies that may be involved in the sport that are not DG companies: Visine (for allergies you pot heads!), sunscreen, water, beer, many clothing companies, sharpies, food chains, Technu, Benadryl, sunglasses, collectives, sport drinks, REI, PIAS, shoes…
I believe DG could be entertaining to watch, but to those that play it. (At least as entertaining as ball golf, nascar and 99% of Olympic sports) But it would take many more people to play the sport, to understand how to watch it, and it would be difficult to set up the cameras to televise it properly. Which currently we don't have.
But the real question is, would we really want that? To have it be THAT popular, means 20 minute wait time at ever tee box, if we are lucky. That would suck. I like knowing the regulars at my home course... as dysfunctional as they are!
