Discing down adventures.

Discdown bag review please

So I've only been playing for about 3 months and like most noob's have been trying to throw distance drivers with no success. Seems I throw them all about the same distance 200-300 max.

(I know I need to work on my form)

Here's my current bag, any thoughts on discing down further?
How's my mix of Under/Overstable?

Avenger SS, D
Valkyrie DX
Archangel DX
TeeBird, KC Champ
Glide Z
XL D
XL Z
Buzzz Z
Buzzz ESP
KC Roc
Soft Wizard
KC Aviar
Soft ION

Thanks -Dave

XL Z
(pick your favorite mid out of these three and then add another understable/workable one, a comet is a good choice)
Buzzz Z
Buzzz ESP
KC Roc
(pick your favorite putter to putt with and use it for putts exclusively, and then see which one you like to drive with. those three are pretty much the top 3 driving putters in my book, so you cant really go wrong.)
Soft Wizard
KC Aviar
Soft ION

this is your new bag. consider adding a slow overstable fairway driver (banshee would be my first choice, but do some research of your own).

I would maybe drop the valk for a bit. I agree with the Banshee idea. I don't really think you need a comet or an understable mid though. Get an Elite X Buzzz and throw some rollers with it and it will turn over for you. This way you don't need to add a new mold. I love my gazelle's and it is a great disc for discing down but do what works for you.

My sig has my tournament bag listed but I have been playing lots of rounds with only 5 molds.

Wizard Putting/Driving
XD faster understable putter for drives and upshots
4 or 5 Buzzes in different plastic and different wear for all my Mid needs
3 or 4 Gazelles in different plastic and different wear
2 Firebirds one heavy and one light for the wind

TeeBird, KC Champ
XL D
XL Z
Buzzz Z
Buzzz ESP Assuming this is beat enough to turn over

One for putts and drives or one for putts and one for drives
Soft Wizard
KC Aviar
Soft ION
Less is generally more at this stage. This setup gives you some molds to familiarize yourself with. You could go with either of the suggestions and do fine also. But here's a short cut to improving your form. Figure out how to throw your Ion 300' and you'll be throwing everything much better. One disc rounds the Ion are fun.

just an update on progress, i was called a sand-bagger today because i was throwing only mids and keeping up with the groups drives.

people in your group do not understand what sandbagger means. anyway, keep doing what your doing

Blood=Progress

OK just an update. went out today and really just focused on my grip, kept everything else the same for the most part. no x-steps, no run ups; feet together and stepped forward with right foot at the most. results below:

Putters
consistently at the 200 mark, up to 240 at times. was getting about 12-15 feet of loft then glide and fade at the end.

Mids
Fuse: was being moody today. i don't know why, kept turning and burning to the right or cruising at 3ft off the ground and eventually hitting grass.
Core: I am convinced this is a god among discs. consistently hitting 300+ with this thing strait out. goes up to a 15-20 ft cruising height and just goes. sometimes it would go right then fade left, but mostly just laser straight with no fade at all.

Fairway Drivers
Currently have 4; 2 Lepoards (172 Pro and 172 Champ), 165 Glo Teebird, 170g sexy red River (the disc was so beautiful i had to get it :|).

Teebird was destroying the others, longest drive was ~370, into a slight left to right headwind at that. The two leopards did pretty consistent, getting out there about 300 when thrown at about an 8-10ft loft. Today was my first go at the River, was hit or miss each throw, kept having an issue where it went pretty high and hyzered out, but still got to 300 regularly with that poor line.

At the end of the session my callous on my index finger was destroyed and had started to bleed after a good set of throws; all fairway drivers 330+ and the core at 300, fuse was a punk. hope to be healed up by the weekend to go play some courses. i definitely gripped it to rip it.

My only concern is that i was getting close to my max distance on throws where the disc never went more than 4ft off the ground, the line would be straight and fast and just glide at that height until it finally lost height and hit the grass. Was it just ridiculous spin helping the disc maintain glide that long? Seemed like the picture perfect right then left fades didn't really gain me much over the low fast gliding throws, this went for all the discs not just the lat 64 ones.

My Discing Down Fun

I recently started playing my rounds with low speed drivers and mids. Mainly mids. I started getting my mids up to almost 300ft. And when I went back to throwing some drives during field work. I increased my snap and distance by about 50-75ft I went from around 300-315 and now most of the time I can throw 360-385ft and it is amazing. This method fixing most of my form issues within a month of so.

Finally a bit of carrot for me too!

Finding that sweet spot and getting snap for long distance is pretty elusive. I think I've posted three times where I thought I was getting the hang of it only to have it all fall apart and back to square one.

So I've kept quiet on the subsequent times where I've felt another breakthrough and I had a few more that subsided and I was glad I kept quiet.

Well this past week has been really good for DG and getting crazy distances (for me anyways). Here's how it happened. At work I listen to lots of podcasts because I'm assembling small things with super tiny screws and it makes the time fly. Well I downloaded some DG videos to my ipod and watched them at work while doing some super boring and repetition tasks. The one I like is the 2011 Amateur Championship from Lewisville, TX. The commentary was great but after seeing the hour long video many times through I started to notice some things. It was mainly some timing issues. I was just floored by how slow they were actually moving while throwing on 300-400 foot holes. At one point the commentator was saying that this particular hole was 380 and he was using a buzzz but just wanted a bit more distance so he went to an XL. As I watched him toss his XL past 350, I was amazing by how slow he moved. It was all slow except the very end where the "hit" is. I started trying to emulate the timing and I could finally feel the "bounce" As I got a bit better, I could get that "bounce" feeling more and more often. I started grabbing some putters and started with the right peck drill. So now, after a week or so of dialing this in, I've gotten these results:

No Step, Stance/feet fixed, half reachback with a Champion Rhyno gives me 200-250 in a nice hyzer flight. With one foot fixed (rear foot) and one step into the hit with the front foot, I've got 280-0300 with a hyzer line.

The same techniques with the Buzzz gives me 300-350. With an XL, I'm hitting trees solid at the 350 mark but they are thick evergreens so I'm not sure how far that XL could really go if it was a clear shot.

I'm just hoping I can keep a hold of this feeling now. I really owe this discovery to watching good DG'ers throw over and over again. I just can't get over how slow they actually move when they throw. My German Shepherd is sure getting a workout now. I huck a disc, she runs it down (finding it if necessary in thick brush if I throw a bad one), and then brings it back without gnawing on the discs. She just so excited and would do this all day. It's like having the benefits of the automatic ball return at the bowling alley. But applied to DG drives. It's a driving range of sorts. She is just running much further on average for throws. She's cute.

Keep at it everyone. There is a light at the end of the discing down tunnel.

DH

After reading a lot of these posts i have decided to disc down and got my playing partners to as well. I got a TL and used it today for some amazing stuff can anyone suggest a good mid, I use a beat to hell drone that goes straight but i mainly throw hyzer spikes with it because that is the only approach shot i am comfortable with. I have a Gateway Element coming soon but all my putters seem to come off with hyzer angle when i approach with them. Any tips?

Get a comet or a Fuse, and throw as many putter/ mid rounds as possible without driving yourself crazy. If you need it throw an over stable putter or your Drone whe it is really windy. The more I throw my Fuse, the better I get.

I played a long course from the medium tees with mainly my Gateway 7i or the drone to drive with and i was getting around 300 if the tees were measured right and on the shorter densely wooded holes i used my magic to do wonders for my score. If I was to get a comet or a fuse what weight should i get and which of the two is better?

Comet or Fuse, the debate rages on.

Comet:
Pros:
  • NEUTRAL
  • Comes in elite X (most touchy), limited ESP (middle), and Elite Z (most forgiving)
  • Has a bead (if you're into that sort of thing)
  • Easiest to throw on a straight line
  • The de facto "OAT detector"

Fuse:
Pros:
  • Neutral to understable (some fly a little like Cores)
  • Comes in Gold Line (sexy as hell) and Opto Line (not as sexy but good workhorse plastic)
  • No bead (maybe a microbead, can't remember)
  • deals with wind slightly better
  • flight has a bit more wiggle in it. (Great for turnovers and held annys)

In a word, they're both great. To me, if I was going with one mid or one mid and an overstable mate (Roc) I'd go with the Comet. If I'm looking for an understable leg of a midrange trio (overstable, stable, understable), I like the Fuse as it really excels as an understable specialist.

Which video?

Which video? Could you post a link? Thanks.

What does 'The de facto "OAT detector"' mean?

It's pretty much the best disc for telling you how bad your form is, due to its very neutral stability. It really does go exactly where you throw it. Until the Fuse came along, of course, now there's some room for debate.

No debate! The fuse sits along side the mako and other comet wanna be's.

Ask for simillar to comet and folks will try to say fuse just as they used to say mako.
There are many slightly understable mids but there is only one comet!
;)
