Change is constant

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 12, 2024 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Open shots on most every hole, this is both a pro and a con as it's great for learning to play, but removes quite a bit of the challenge.
Tee pads are nice and baskets are also good catching.
Elevation changes are a feature not many courses nearby can use like this park does.
The local players do their best to make this course as good as it can be.

Cons:

The city itself doesn't seem to see the course as important enough to warrant special consideration when it comes to park grooming.
The majority of this 18 hole course are wide open shots all of similar distance with only elevation change being a factor.
The couple water holes can be brutal if you miss, as the retention pond you play around has become quite nasty making disc recovery an unwelcome attempt.
For the space 9 holes was a better fit than 18 but they had the baskets so they crammed them all in.y

Other Thoughts:

I have lost count of the number of times this city has changed this course. It's honestly an afterthought for the park even though it's the entire reason the park gets used. Whomever is in charge of maintenance doesn't understand disc golf, as every old growth tree that causes difficulty with shots ends up cut down and a new sapling is planted in its place. The number of times the city has physically made changes to the park as well that have caused the course to change. Seems every 5 years or so something happens at the park that forces them to take holes out and move them.
In all it was better served as a 9 hole course it was originally designed as. 18 is cramped for the area involved.
Still I've played far worse and it's great for teaching the basics.

A Typical Recreational Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 31, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

(2.662 Rating) A lightly wooded to open layout with moderate elevation changes.
- CHARACTER - The equipment and extras are the best things going for this short city course. Very nice 5 foot by 12 foot concrete tees. Older Mach III baskets that are all still in good repair. There are benches at 6 holes and there's a practice basket. I loved the memorial to Phil Hullin, one of the founders and creators of the course. There are also bag hangers affixed to the nice tee signs. As for missing items, no alt basket placements and only one extra tee pad on (18). The course info says there's a short pad on (17), but I walked all over and couldn't find it.
- NAVIGATION - Observe the red painted chain. Players that pay attention to this subtle cue will have no issues navigating this course. There is only one painted chain at each basket and it's aligned in the direction of the next tee. In addition, there are adequate tee signs with topography indicated using a slight color palette shift. Great course map next to tees (1) and (10) and also numbered placards on top of the baskets.
- ELEVATION - Lots of rolling elevation makes up for the lightly wooded terrain. Several grade changes in the 25 to 30 feet range.
- BEGINNER FRIENDLY - The first time I came out here, I brought my whole family. Although there are a couple of occurrences where a newer player should not throw, hole (17) for example, a vast majority of the course is very forgiving to the poorest of throws.
- QUICK PLAY - For an 18 hole layout this one will move really quick on an empty course. I figure under 2 hours for foursomes.
- MAINTENANCE - In the two times I've played here, it was in excellent condition both times. The mowers were literally out while I was playing and the un-mowed grass was still at an acceptable length. Also clean though-out the course.
- NIGHT GOLF - I observed several baskets with solar powered lights affixed to the baskets. If I lived in town, I'd be throwing night golf in the fall and spring for sure.

Cons:

A few minor issues, but otherwise a pleasant experience.
- UNIQUENESS - Adelaide Park has an over abundance of open to lightly wooded shots. Perhaps there are 1 or 2 tee shot with a moderately wooded line. This is an all par 3 course to Intermediate level players and above. To Recreational players, the par suggestions listed on the tee signs are far too generous. Perhaps holes (10) and (17) are par 4s, but the rest should be par 3s. Last I'll mention water features which makes glancing appearances on many holes and it will surely terrify newer players on (17).
- LACK OF CHALLENGE - I scored the course as lower Recreational level using the par 54 set-up, so a touch below average. Being a mostly park style course. Players can expect a round with a lot of options off the tee. Holes (10) and (17) look like the only holes that are going to rattle higher skilled players. Recreational players will be able to go 6 down on the string of holes (11) thru (16) if they play this one enough. The biggest obstacle here will be the wind.
- PARKING BY TEE 1 - The course starts in an odd spot in the northeast corner the park, 400 feet from the parking area.
- SPACING - From what I've read, this was originally a 9 holer for several years and then it upgraded to 18 using the baskets from the short lived Buttermilk Creek 9 holer on the south side of town. It's very easy to put a disc into other fairways on this course. Not only is it a tight squeeze to begin with, but there's also lots of elevation and wind that will take discs well off their intended path. I'd keep my head on a swivel if several groups were on the course.

Other Thoughts:

I grew up in Fond du Lac, but Adelaide was built after I moved away. This is a no doubt fun local Recreational course that I'm sure has a big local following. Had I still lived in the area, I'm sure I would have played the course regularity as it had been the only game in town for the past 18 years. With the new course going up on the Northeast side of town, the scene here is likely going to evolve to be a bit more casual as the Advanced players will likely shift over there. Still however, definitely worth a spin if traveling through town. Just not interesting enough to travel more than a half hour out of the way to go see it unless you are a course bagger like me. I'd probably give the course a 2.75 rating if we could rate by quarters of a disc.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - Average or perhaps slightly below that notion. The large pond with 6 foot tall cattails along all the shores are easily the most pleasing element that impacts several holes. The down side is the lack of tree coverage. The best looking hole IMO is the last hole with the tee shot slitting two bigger trees to form a low window. A nice way to end a rather bland layout.

Good City Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 14, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Clever layout to fit 18 holes into the amount of space available. The water hazard is well used to force changes to shot selection. Good use of the little bit of elevation available. Concrete tees are in good shape. There is a minimal amount of trees but what is there is utilized to create obstacles.

Cons:

Litter can accumulate, specifically from alcohol consumption, which is disappointing as it is on a school grounds. Layout is possible to follow but there are no signs to guide you between holes so the first time or two you might be turning in a circle to find the next tee.

Other Thoughts:

Great course for the city of Fond du Lac. Probably not worth driving out of your way for considering the premier options within an hour of this course but definitely appreciated if you are local.

Not so Fondy of this course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 21, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

A municipal course that has gently rolling hills and a very modest amount of tree coverage, Adelaide Park offers a nice challenge to beginners and low amateur players.
Hole 6 offers a beautiful challenge slightly across water. Hole 10 is a beautiful long hole. Hole 11 is tight and technical. Hole 16 is a tricky little delight. Hole 17 is a big beast of a hole. The 18th is a magnificent finishing hole.

Cons:

The 12 holes I didn't mention are open and boring, without any obstacles on either fairways or greens. The distances all fall into a few ranges, and the only thing that makes them remotely interesting is the use of slope (which you tend to figure out after just a few round, which make it boring unless there is high wind).

Other Thoughts:

It was 95, humid, and the wind always seems to blow 30 MPH when I am here, but I still manage great scores.

It's a shame that these municipal parks exist that offer enough interesting landscape for 6-9 holes, but lack anything interesting for the rest of the holes. Designers would be wise to make these into 9 hole courses to attract youth and to grow the sport, rather than cram 18 boring holes into places like this.

Windy, vandalized, and boring. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 26, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Adelaide Park contains an 18 hole disc golf course and a skate park.

The DGA baskets catch well and are in good repair. They also have a single chain painted that directs you to the next tee pad. This is simple, yet genius and would be a great idea for other courses with single tee pads.

There is good elevation here, and it comes into play on a few holes.

There is a pond in the middle of the park, and is used on several holes, most notably hole 17, which most would consider the signature hole here.

Tee pads are concrete, and relatively grippy. Some are starting to break up, and they could probably be a touch longer.

Cons:

Wind is ALWAYS a factor here, as the course is nearly completely wide open. Several trees have been planted, but several trees have also been taken out.

The water holes feel forced to me. Instead of true water carries, baskets are simply placed next to the water's edge. Some people may like this, but it feels lazy to me. No real suspense, just a chance to lose plastic, as you're really not going to want to go in the nasty water here.

The tee signs here are nearly all gone due to vandalism. The few that remain are decent, and provide basic information about each hole.

Other Thoughts:

While this course is certainly playable, it just doesn't do it for me. It's mostly boring, and the biggest factor is usually wind and elevation, which don't really work well together. Unfortunately, it's the only course in Fond du Lac, so the locals are kind of stuck with it.

Some more mature trees and upkeep would help this course tremendously. There's some good aspects here that COULD make this a much more fun course.

Hole 1 starts across the grass to the north from the parking lot (away from the skate park and elementary school) and plays back towards the parking lot.

This is a course that's worth bagging if you're in the area, but probably won't leave you feeling like you need to play it again.

Challenging course with dangerous water shots. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 25, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

The mach 3's they had here were all in good shape and caught well. Also the concrete tees were all level, grippy and large enough. The elevation here offers a high degree of challenge, especially if windy. When we went it was extremely windy and almost impossible to hit your shot. The pond in the park is used on 4 of the holes with the baskets being located pretty close to the water. The tee signs here were pretty good too. They had all the info you'd need on them with a good map of the hole layout. I like that the chain that's painted red on each basket is actually there to point you to the next hole. This is a great idea as there are some longer walks between a few of the holes. The course starts in the northeastern corner of the park with a very nice kiosk with a large detailed map of the course. The course was very clean and looked to be very well maintained. There's a skatepark in the park as well but won't come into play, other than that all you got to worry about is other disc golfers here.

Cons:

A number of the holes were very open or had very few trees. The baskets had numbers on both sides which was confusing on hole 3 since the number facing the tee pad said 5. I don't know what these numbers were on there for. Some of the rough around the pond and the pond itself can make it very easy to lose a disc. Hole 17 is kind of ridiculous with jungle like rough and the pond to the right and more jungle and a creek to the left with a very narrow tunnel off the pad. This hole is also probably 3 times longer than the previous hole. Would've liked to see them split this more evenly.

Other Thoughts:

This was a very solid course overall just nothing too amazing either. If you're in the area I'd definitely recommend checking it out though. It's a fun course and the water holes really add some much needed challenge.

Worth the Trip 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 4, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

>Good tee boxes and markings
>Good elevation changes (use of hills)
>Fun course for any skill level, with a good balance of long and short holes
>Some holes had multiple tee boxes for pro vs rec
>Gave par for both recreational players and pros at each tee box
>Good use of the pond on the holes that bordered it.

Cons:

>Too open. There were not a lot of trees or other obstacles
>Parking lot is not near the first hole, so it became confusing to try to find it. It was the first time we played this course though, but some accurate markings would have helped.
>The course was very close together, and some holes were placed in very close proximity.
>The hole order was harder to find on the Front 9, since there wasn't arrows or markings leading to the next hole.

Other Thoughts:

Overall this course was very nice. It looked like the people who ran the park were trying to plant more trees on the course which was a plus. Also the park had maps of the whole course at opposite ends, which helped to find where the holes were. The course bordered a playground, so hitting the kids might become a hazard during school hours.

That Lake Ate My Coyote! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 28, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Adelaide stretches over several moderately-sized hills with several holes abutting a small lake. Most of the course is a wide open grassy field, with elevation providing the main challenge. A few holes have a smattering of mature trees and bushes in play, although no hole has enough to count as "wooded." Water comes into play on several holes, increasing the risk greatly. Safe landing zones are available for all water holes, but errant shots most likely will end up wet, with little chance of recovery.
- Good solid concrete tees throughout. Nice signs provide distances and a rough sketch of the hole layout. Baskets are in great shape. One chain is painted red on each basket: this is the "next hole" marker. Walk in the direction of the red chain to reach the next tee pad.
- For a course without many trees, Adelaide has some very solid risk/reward opportunities. Water comes into play in several places: running along a fairway to the right, running along a fairway to the left, water directly behind the basket, and one hole (#17) with water on both sides. Safe-landing zones make the water holes very fair, but punish errant shots. Elevation is used to its maximum potential. Baskets sit along the tops of several hills, with several potential rollaway spots. The course forces shots both up and down the hills.
- #17 is an outstanding hole that has water to the right and left. The water to the left is slightly shielded by brush and trees growing on the steep slope down the lake. A safe-landing zone is provided about halfway to the basket, but otherwise the fairway is pretty narrow and offers the best risk/reward on the course.

Cons:

- Since Adelaide plays mostly over open field, the flow might be slightly confusing the first time through. The red chain "next tee" signage is brilliant and largely alleviates problems, so I don't find this to be too much of a "con."
- Multi-use park may experience some issues with other park-goers and/or with other discers (some fairways overlap a bit).

Other Thoughts:

- Not an amazing course, but solid through and through. I'm very partial to wooded, adventure style golfing but this open, grassy, park-style course had me wanting more. The water holes and those with risky, rollaway-prone pin placements offered plenty of danger for the round.
- Great for glow rounds. Impossible to lose a disc (unless it gets wet).

A little too open 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 5, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course plays through a mostly open park with some scattered trees and grassy fairways. There is some nice elevation with a small sledding hill and a couple other rolling hills throughout the park to make it a little more interesting. There are a handful of water holes that add a little risk, especially the couple with elevated pins with the potential to roll down into the water. Hole 17 was the most interesting with the pond to the right and a drop off into woods with a creek on the left, and enough distance to tempt you to really throw a drive.

There are nice signs here with hole layout and distance, and they include contours to show the elevation changes. There are full course maps at holes 1 and 10 so you can start on either side of the park and still see the course layout. The baskets are in decent shape and catch well, and have one chain painted red to point the way to the next tee.

Cons:

The holes get quite repetitive here, with most of them being pretty wide open with only some small trees and some minor elevation as obstacles. The wind can be a factor here, but I found most of the holes had wide open spike hyzer routes for either hand that take the wind out of play. Other than a couple holes, the course is pretty short and doesn't really provide much challenge or variety to really test different parts of your game.

Other Thoughts:

This is a fun short course with some minor elevation and some nice water hazards. It's a little to open and short to be really challenging for more experienced players, but is a fine course for beginners to try out the sport with only a few spots to lose a disc and not too much length. If you're in the area, it's worth a quick round but don't drive out of your way for this one.

nice little course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 29, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Holes #1, #3, and #17 are holes you would enjoy anywhere. There is a lot of elevation here and buckets placed on hill sides; thus, landing placement is important. This tests you're skills is that area. Regarding navigation: the side of the chains have been painted red in the direction of next tee. Sounds like it would not work that well; but, actually this an extremely useful tool at this course; which has been redesigned a number of times. I repeat; RED PAINT ON CHAINS, will lead you easily to next tee. Water holes on the course are nice. #6 and #17 are solid/fairly difficult water holes. Nice tee signs and tee pads; concrete. I believe yardage on #2 is incorrect; hole does not play 360, but other than that, yardages seem to be correct.

Cons:

This is a short course. Advanced or better players will need to make putts and score on most holes. Disc course has been relatively full nearly every time I've been there.

Other Thoughts:

As with most courses, wind adds to the difficulty of play. With many pins located on hillsides, this course plays tougher than many courses in windy conditions. Adelaide was originally a nine hole course. As an 18, it is rather short, but a nice enough course all the same. I believe the latest layout has used the water the best of all designs. Holes #5 and #13 should IMOH be placed even closer to the pond edge for added toughness.

Mellow Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 24, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

On certain days when the weathers 90 degrees and not a cloud in the sky, you don't really want to be looking for your frisbee in a massive tree or clump of bushes. This course has nice distances, real nice hill shots structured around a big hill in the middle and launching in three different directions I think... at least two different dierections and then back up one of the sides lol. I did lose a wolf to the pond on hole 17, I was upset because I'd been having a really good game of 6 under playing them all par three and then boop... in the water with my wolf. There were people swimming around feeling the bottom for frisbees, seemed a very relaxed course for being next door to a skate park. This course has all the major disc golf food groups (water/wood/field/trick) it just lacks difficulty which is what makes it oh so perfect for a blazing day in the sun.

Cons:

The markings are confusing. You put a frisbee in a basket and then look around... and look around... then you see a sign rotated in your direction and that's where you go. It's bad for a first timer to the course but if it's in your backyard it's not a problem.

Just Okay 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 22, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Pretty park, allowed the illusion of being in a relatively natural area while in the city. The pond in that forms the structure of the back 9 is aesthetically pleasing, as well as providing a hazard for several of the holes.

I really enjoyed the elevation changes on many of the holes; throwing both up- and downhill. The baskets in most cases provide good hazards, from the hole one tee pad you can see the basket through a small tunnel in a large group of trees and bushes that realistically you have to throw around, but that tunnel is awfully tempting. Lots of little things like this make the course endearing.

Hole 17 is special, a nice long drive down a narrow fairway, with the pond shore on the right and deep hill into bushes on the left.

Easy to find, and within range of many necessities given that it's right in town. Good tees, baskets are in good condition, locals were friendly.

Cons:

If you play this course regularly, I'm sure you have a great time with it. I struggled due to the lack of signage to literally find where I was going. Only the first two holes have tee signs, and while some baskets have arrows pointing in the vague direction of the next tee, and some tee pads have a small arrow pointing to the next basket, it's really hard to tell where you are going. After throwing my drive on hole 6, I approached the basket only to discover it was labeled 8. I looked to my left and found myself looking at basket 5, which was not the basket I holed out 5 in (my basket was also marked 5).

Complicating matters, the fairways are generally wide open, and not specific to one hole or another, making things even more difficult in terms of navigation. I played all the holes (I think), but couldn't score the round because I couldn't assure what hole was what on several.

Other Thoughts:

From what I gather, this course is being restructured, or has been, and this would explain a lot of the problems I had. I felt as though with the proper signage, the experience would have been much more enjoyable to me.

Still, this course is never going to be world class - it's just not that type of course. With correct signage, I would rate it a 3.0.

That having been said, the course is a lot of fun. The elevation changes are smart how they are designed, and provide for lots of challenge. The use of the pond as a hazard on several holes is also well done. In spite of the problems, I had fun with this course.

If someone wants to let me know if new signs get put up, I would gladly re-play and re-review the course.

Glad I stopped by 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 19, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) Course uses all of the property features well. 4 or 5 holes have water that is definitely in play. A handful have baskets tucked near or surrounded by trees. The finishing hole is a tunnel shot down a corridor of large mature trees. Elevation comes into play on 4 or 5 holes, although those baskets are in the wide open so the elevation is the only interest on those holes.

2) Nice concrete tee pads on every hole. Baskets are also in good condition. Tee areas have sign posts near most holes, but are missing signs (This isnt vandalism here it is becuase the course was just totally changed, so they havent gotten new signs yet.)

3) Forces you to think about your shot on most holes. Only a couple are staring right at you, the other have different options for getting to the basket.

4) Nice park in with other amenities, but the disc golf is on its own int he park which I always factor into my review. Its nice to disc golf and not have to worry about hitting other people doing other things. The only issue would be if people were fishing in the big pond!

Cons:

1) Missing signage because it is new, but I am sure that will be taken care of soon.

2) Only one or two long holes so the distances get a little boring, but since most holes have some other obstacle it isn't completely boring.

3) Grass is still very thin on this course because it was seeding in October. It should fill in as things start to grow now, but for the time being if it is wet it could be a little muddy.

4) Lots of garbage and stuff around the pond, although it looks like the pond is an overflow for the rainwater system or something because of the massive pipes feeding into it by hole #16.

Other Thoughts:

I played this course on my way to a tourney in Berlin at Riverside Park. I played 2 more courses after the tourney and had fun at each course. This was the most well rounded I played. I did like Winnebago County better but this course had its own uniqueness and I am glad I played it too. I wanted to get back to pull out the two discs I saw (one in pond one in river) but it got dark.
