Unique... But Not Memorable

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 28, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

- nice concrete tees
- decent color tee signs
- good full color map at start of course
- nice Latitude 64 baskets
- lots of elevation change
- some decent obstacles
- well isolated from other park activities, besides walking paths
- port o potty near hole 8

Cons:

- walk from parking lot is long and nonsensical
- hole 1 location is not obvious
- navigation could be much better
- lots of walking path interference
- baskets could use hole numbers to help with navigation
- not a ton of variety; same grip and rip uphill shots on many holes
- one tee sign missing
- layout could make much more sense, with hole 10 taking you back away from parking lot after approaching it on hole 9

Other Thoughts:

This course was... unique. It is probably fair to say it's unlike any other course I've played. I came for the elevation change, which is less common in Chicago. It was here, but the course felt contrived, like someone saw an opportunity to put a course where there were some hills and just forced it. It's hard to explain it better than that; I expected to enjoy this course and for the most part I really didn't. It's perfectly serviceable, with decent tee signs, nice baskets, and nice, large concrete tees, but the "feel" was just off and the X factor wasn't there.

The walking paths crisscrossing the park are definitely a safety hazard, although it was pretty deserted when I was there and didn't appear like it would be busy often. Otherwise, the biggest downside was probably just the repetition. There were a lot of overly steep uphill shots where you're just ripping uphill as hard as you can. On several of these, there is a blind dropoff on the other side of the hill. I guess this requires some level of skill, but it wasn't the kind of technical challenge I enjoy - a lot of hoofing it up and down plain, wide open hills if you miss.

A few of the middle holes were more flat and incorporated a creek hazard, and these were probably my favorite. As with many hilly, open courses, wind can definitely be a factor here up top. Perhaps the biggest issue here was the super weird layout. The walk from the parking lot to hole 1 is very long and not intuitive at all. At the end, you think you're headed back towards the parking lot, and then hole 10 throws back the opposite direction to end the course - this could have been designed much better. To save yourself a lot of headache, you can park on Brandon Rd. and enter the park right by the start of hole 8. If you play 8-10 then continue on to 1-7, you save a lot of needless walking and confusion. Fairways are not always obvious and without hole numbers on the baskets, it's easy to throw at the wrong one, which I always find irritating. I love a good challenge but this isn't in the "good" category.

Amenities were average here, and objectively I suppose it's a decent course. However, if you're going to drive all the way down here, there are way better courses around. The Lockport/Joliet area is way better and The Oaks in Mokena is also way better. I wouldn't bother making the trip back here.

Southland Trio - Hilly course

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 22, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a great course to practice elevated shots and approaches. Medium to large hills come into play on nearly every hole- only 9 and 10 are relatively flat. There are a couple steep up shots, a few blind shots and elevated tees that shoot downwards. The park is well maintained with little chance of losing plastic. There are concrete tee pads and some seating. A small creek crosses the fairway on holes 3 and 5. Ace run opportunities on several holes.

Cons:

The course needs permanent signs as the laminated ones fall off the post and are currently missing on 4 and 7. All hole numbers should be bumped up by one- Hole 10 should be Hole 1; the current numbering assignment is awkward. "Next tee" signs would be helpful. Adding obstacles and clever basket choices- elevated or behind some shrubs- would make this course more appealing to advanced players. It could also use more seating, garbage cans, practice baskets and (perhaps unrealistically) a second bridge over the creek.

Other Thoughts:

The elevation throughout the course makes it an interesting addition to the area. The long(ish) par 4's will challenge seasoned players while beginners will struggle to make par for the round. That being said, the openness hinders Archer from reaching it's true potential.*This is one of three local courses that are within 20 minutes of each other. Rivals Lookout Park is a scenic course with some technical shots that sits along the Kankakee River. Old Smokey City Park is a short, open ace run course. All three are low traffic and a decent leg to hone your skills. I'm a guide for these courses, so don't hesitate to contact me for information or possibly play a round together.

Some nice elevation 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 4, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Full size concrete tee pads with new yellow Latitude64 Pro baskets. Picnic tables are on some of the holes. Most of the park is dedicated to disc golf only. The walking path used as OB provides an extra challenge on 3 of the holes.
Hole 1 utilizes the elevation by having you drive from a hill to another hill with the basket at the top.
Hole 2 has you drive from the side of the big hill back to the top of the same hill from hole 1.
Hole 3 has the stream and a tree growth area providing obstacles.
Hole 4 is the easiest hole with only slight elevation and rough past the basket.
Hole 5 has a small hill most the length.
Hole 6 has the stream and a few trees as obstacles.
Hole 7 tee pad is on a hill and you throw down with the path as OB. It is a fun hole due to throwing down and plays less than 370ft.
Hole 8 has a large hill in the right side but is not necessary to use for the hole.
Hole 9 is a long dogleg right with trees along the right and the path in the center.
Hole 10 has a workout area and path as the only obstacles.

Cons:

Start at hole 10 if you do not want to walk needlessly. Hole one is far from the parking lot and if you start at hole 10 and proceed to hole one you will save yourself quite a bit of extra walking. Since the course is new they can still change the numbers to make it easier.
There are some existing obstacles but if trees were planted this course could be really fun in the future. Currently there are too few obstacles to add challenge beyond the distance and elevation on some holes.

Other Thoughts:

If they moved the tee pad for hole 3 on top of the hill by the basket on 2 they could create a really fun hole due to having to cross the bridge anyways. Number the course correctly or get rid of hole 10 and make it a practice basket. This course is worth checking out if you live in the area but it is by no means a destination course. Elevation is fun on a few holes but there are not enough trees to make it challenging or a lot of fun.
