Pros:

Athey Creek Church DGC is a nice little brand new course in West Linn and Wilsonville area. This course offers a nice variety of shots and plays as 10 holes which is a little interesting. Course is on a church and very well maintained. This course is right on a hill beside a road with some long holes up the hill.

Brand new hardware such as Dynamic Veteran baskets which show you where the next hole is. New tee pads and temporary tee signs. Some holes do play in the woods which is nice to have a little bit of change after hiking all the way up that hill. Hole 5 is probably my favorite hole. This hole plays downhill and all the way downhill which is nice after playing those steep holes.

This course is pretty easy to navigate you way around. All of the tee signs are temporary with wooded sticks and laminated paper. It does not looks like they did a lot of clearing before they put in this course. Hole 4 is a beast. This hole plays straight up hill with the tee pad mounted into the side of the hill. Hole 7s tee pad has been moved back I think. When I played they had a temporary one when the course was first added.

The views are great especially from hole 5 and a couple other holes. All the baskets are great especially one of them has a basket on top of a stump.

Course has changed and I like the changes that they made. Hole number 2 tee pad is now much better where you can actually throw a bomb down. Top of the world hole like Hole 5 has gotten a lot of clearing. It is great now but when I went there was a lot of leftover blackberry vines.

Cons:

This course is uphill and 10 holes is a little weird but if they had the room than it is fine. They do have back tees on some of the holes and especially on hole 2 they moved the tee pad but when I played it was like hole 4 all over again. This course has changed and it is probably much better.

This course has a few minor problems but not very much. It was recently added so they still have a few glitches to work out. This course is one of a couple courses to have a disc golf course on a church which is fine. Crossing fairways are not the greatest on holes 6 and 10. I wonder if they have fixed that because I have not been there in a bit.

Other Thoughts:

This course is more on the you have played and you are decently good course. I do like all the things they have added in the recently good pics. I would like to see them add tee signs to this course and take out the temporary ones.

This course is definitely on my top list for favorite courses on a Church. Some minor improvements and this course could be maybe even a 4!

Fun short course with a lot of elevation change 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 12, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

+ Nice mix of hole distances with some par 4s--you'll have opportunities to use your distance drivers
+ LOTS of elevation changes. You repeatedly play up and down some moderately steep inclines, including a fun downhill hole 5 where you can watch your midrange glide all the way from top to bottom.
+ Well manicured grassy area for holes 7-12, shaded by tall Douglas firs
+ Nice vista of the hills of West Linn from the top of the course
+

Cons:

- Shot selection is *generally* either a wide open uphill distance drive or wide open downhill putter hyzer
- Errant drives on 1 or 3 have a decent chance of going into the road

Other Thoughts:

Recently added a couple portable Axiom baskets to make a new hole 3 and hole 12. Course plays a little more fluidly with those additions. They're not the most interesting holes (a downhill putter hyzer on 3, and the finishing teepad from what was hole 10 now ends with a shorter midrange FH hyzer rather than the long BH)

Pros:

When arriving I was happily surprised to see beautiful new dynamic veteran baskets. The baskets were not only marked with hole number but have very clean looking white flags on the top to identify with hole number as well as to see from tee pads. Tee pads are in good condition with signs next to each one. The course itself has great elevation change, and mix of distances. Two par 4s to let it air out and some technical shots as well. Hole 5 is a great downhill shot with elevated basket in a stump. 7 is a tight uphill par 4 this course has dramatic elevation change with the room they had they made a great layout.

Cons:

Only 10 holes
No distances on the tee signs

Other Thoughts:

I wasn't expecting much coming here however the course was a pleasant surprise. Wouldn't mind having this place near me. Super clean and friendly enviromemt with a solid 10 holes

Fun Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 14, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Fun and clean disc course. Enjoyed the long holes and uphill/downhill challenge. Great baskets and flags to note wind direction.

Had a few blind shots, but no major risk of losing discs as grounds are clean and clear.

Plenty of parking and had the course all to ourselves on a warm July Saturday,

Cons:

Lots of hills to climb with bumpy terrain, only a con if you are out of shape or a bit older.

Tee pads are just 1-2 feet short for my preference. Signs are temporary laminated numbers, but do the job.

Other Thoughts:

Overall great! Definitely one to play in this area!

Not your average church course!! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 5, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

The first big plus on this course is that it now has 10 beautiful concrete tee pads and Dynamic Veteran baskets. Combined with the baskets and tees, the property itself was very neat and clean. It seems like the designers of the course have done a lot of recent work to clear out blackberries along the side of the large rise in the middle of the course that, if present, would have been a serious problem as about 4 holes play directly over or adjacent to that space.

The next big comment on this course is that, unlike most <18 hole church/small park courses, Athey Creek has some serious size. There are two ~500 foot par 4-esque holes, along with several more in the 400 foot range. These mix in pretty well with a number of shorter reach-able par 3s to the give the course some nice variety. The large space, coupled with a nice smattering of large Doug Fir trees give the course a nice "fun" factor, with good opportunities to shape some fun shots without too much danger of losing discs. Going off that "fun" factor, the course has some nice use of elevation, mainly in the course's 3 (4 if you count hole 8) downhill shots. I wasn't as impressed with the uphill holes (1, 2, and 4, though I did like 7), but hey, hard to have big downhill shots without some climb as well.

While the tee signs right now are rudimentary (laminated sign with just the hole number), the course was actually quite easy to navigate, one of the perks of the Dynamic Veteran baskets is that the "next tee" arrow is cleverly built into the metal of the basket. The holes also have large, highly-visible flags, which did come in handy as a few tees do have the issue of having 2 or 3 baskets in sight off the tee.

As of now, there are signs next to where I imagine short tees might eventually be made, as of now there isn't anything there, not even a dug out space, but in general, I liked the idea, and for a number of the longer holes, these am tees would really help the course for newer players.

Hole highlights: It's rare for a course with just 10 holes to have a few "top-of-the-world" like holes, but Athey Creek manages. Hole 5 plays nearly 80 feet down, and about 400 feet out, with some obstacles in the way, to a stunning elevated "stump" placement. I also particularly liked hole 8, a pretty straightforward open 250 foot shot, to a basket perched on the edge of a large downhill slope on the right and behind. Lastly, hole 3, while not standing out as a particularly exciting hole, is a nice downhill chip shot to a protected basket that's a real joy to play.

Cons:

A number of the holes are both a bit uninspired, but also, due to their length, are a bit of a drag to play (at least for anyone with less than 400' of power in their drive): hole 4 is the big culprit here, being 330 feet straight up, playing more like 430. While I can't say that I outright dislike holes 1 and 2 (unlike some other reviewers I somewhat enjoyed the novelty of hole 2's extreme uphill blind tee shot), in combination with 4, having the course start with 3 out of the first 4 holes essentially having no obstacles on the tee, playing significantly uphill *and* out of range for 95% of arms, felt a bit disheartening, especially compared to how much I liked the rest of the course.

This critique is more admittedly picky, but I think this course suffers a bit from the "tweener" par 3.5 holes. Holes 1, 4, and 6 are all holes where only a player with a massive arm is going to have a chance at birdie, while at the same time, there aren't enough obstacles to make par a real challenge for most experienced players either.

I do think that adding am pads will help a lot with this course. As it stands, in part because it's only 10 holes, this course isn't really worth driving a long way for (though certainly worth coming to see it at least once); or for out-of-town visitors. However, for the people living nearby who might play this course regularly, I think both newer players who might struggle with the length, and more experienced players who just want more variety, would appreciate a second set of tee pads.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, I was really impressed by this course. And I think it's definitely a bit more "fun" than my 2.5 rating might suggest. Honestly, if this course had more holes, or if they put in some sort of am pads where they are currently marked, I would give this course a 3 out of 5. This course certainly bucks the trend of boring church courses, following in the tradition of another local church course (Lunchtime disc golf course). You can really tell that the people who put this course in took their time and really poured some heart and soul into this course.

Another Church Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 23, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Athey Creek is one of the newer and certainly one of the better courses in the Oregon City/West Linn/Tualatin/Wilsonville area. The course plays throughout hilly, lightly wooded terrain.

-Brand new Dynamic Veteran baskets.

-Two tee boxes to choose from. The long tees are concrete, and the short are natural. Both are market with signs.

-The course flowed well, with no long walks between holes. The only problem is the crossing fairways of holes #6, #9, and #10.

-Fantastic views from the top of the hill, at tees #3 and #8.

-Best Holes:
#5, a downhill shot best for a forehand flex. The basket is perched dangerously atop a huge tree stump.

#9, a long, downhill, blind shot playing more than 500 feet and through a grove of Douglas firs

#10, a gentle backhand hyzer shot through the trees.

Cons:

Problematic Holes:
#2, a 500 foot shot up a very steep hill. The steepest part of the hill is directly in front of the tee, making it difficult to progress more than 1/2 of the way to the basket. This would be a better hole if the tee were moved forward 100ft.

#9, the long, downhill blind shot crosses fairways with both holes #6 and #10. This would be a safety concern during crowded times.

-The tee signs were laminated and only featured the hole number. Permanent signs with distance and par would be welcome.

-There appeared to be some sort of stage in the area of holes #6, #9, and #10. I have no idea when it's used, but it would close those three holes.

Other Thoughts:

-Significant work looks to have been done clearing blackberries on the hillside near holes #5 and #9.

-Athey Creek Church is the fourth church in the area to install a disc golf course, in addition to PDX Bible Church (Lunchtime) Tualatin Community Church, and Willamette Christian Church.

-From reading past reviews, this course appears to be seeing ongoing improvements. I'm excited to see what's in store for the future.

Ups and Downs 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 18, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Challenging course with lots of big hills to throw up and down, short hole that require finesse and long holes to to really let the disc fly. Great for improving your game if your new to the sport or getting back into it.

Very nice cause with lots of views of the surrounding areas. The 7 basket you can see a bit of Mt. Hood and on tee 8 you can see the top of Mt. Saint Helens (on a clear day of course).

Just got new concrete Tee pads for Main course and new Tee pads for Beginner (natural tees - marked with white paint and white wood) making it a shorter to play.

The new tee pads makes this course easier to find the next tee and each basket has an arrow in it pointing to the next tee.

Tee 3 and 5 have been moved and 3 has a top of the world view.

Easy access from I-205. Take exit 3, head south on SW Stafford Rd., then Left on SW Ek Rd.

Cons:

Tee signs on tee boxes only indicated tee, not par or distance

Tee 8 is pointing more to the left of the hole than to the hole and sunk a little bit so it isn't flat like the other tee's, but it is 100% better than it was.

Athey Creek Course Can Leave You Up Their Creek Without A Paddle! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 19, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

As you enter the church's property, you'll catch glimpses of the white Veterans basket around including one way up on a steep hillside. I spoke with Kaipo, some kind of a minister and the disc golf man here. The course is his baby and he designed it to his skill level. Now, I don't presume to know what kind of a player, Kaipo is but he is a big athletic looking dude. Needless to say, this course is no easy walk in the park.

The current tee pads are small rubber mats with white front boards. Some of them are very rough preventing much of a run-up. Concrete pads are coming. There are no tee signs yet. The Veteran baskets do have a flag with the hole number on it.

# 1 starts right at the corner of this large garage looking building and plays about 325' over the parking lot and then up a sizable hill. I wasn't a fan of # 2. After finishing on # 1, you walk down a hillside toward the street to throw back up to the basket way, way up there. It's probably 350' and the rough tee area prevents much of a run-up. For # 3 and 4 you walk farther ahead to play down a hillside and then back up again.

# 5 is maybe 375', down a big hill with the basket perched on a stump behind a fairly big clump of brush and trees. You want to avoid this bushy area. Now walk back towards the garage building and you'll find the # 6 tee here in the manicured picnic area. # 6 plays slightly up to the basket about 300'. # 7 might be my favorite hole here. It's slightly uphill requiring a right turn and the fairway is natural looking.

# 8 is a fun 250' open downhill shot requiring a nice touch.

I'm not sure where the # 9 tee pad is. But I played from the hill close to the # 8 basket and this would make a wonderful big air shot down to the basket some 400' away and it would need a little hyser to negotiate through the big trees. Then the # 10 tee pad is maybe 50' up this little path. This makes for a fun and beautiful drive through the trees to the # 10 basket back where it all started.

Cons:

My biggest Con was the navigating. Simply writing the hole # on the painted, white front board would be a big help. Some kind of next tee arrow on or under the basket would be a big help to the traveling player. Of course, signage would be the biggest navigational aid.

For most players, their biggest Con will be the currently rough and sometimes unsafe tee pads.

I never enjoy teeing off blindly down in a hole and that's exactly what # 2 is. Only without a level tee pad to get any power behind your drive. I would move this pad somewhere up the hill where the basket is visible and closer.

And for many players, just the physical workout will be a problem.

And lastly, 4/10 holes play uphill. IMO, that's probably two to many. I'd figure out a way to walk up one of those hills without throwing up it.

Other Thoughts:

The course is not advanced level difficult but it's probably an intermediate level in the current configuration. It will appeal to the younger, more athletic type of player but I think many of the church's patrons such as families and beginners won't find this course enjoyable. They can drive the short 4.2 miles and play the beginner friendly Xerox course.

And try to find a way to place the # 9 tee pad near the # 8 basket. I know it's not the ideal place for it because of safety concerns but I doubt whether this course will ever have that many players playing a one time. And if there are players waiting up at the # 8 tee pad, they have a wide open look and can wait. And a tee pad there would make # 9 a spectacular, as well as beautiful hole.

Do I throw here, or over there? 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 18, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

It's really beautiful out there, the course is on the south side of I-205 on church grounds, and surprisingly quiet despite being so close to the freeway. The view across the valley to West Linn farmlands is nice.
The fairways were free of brush and the Dynamic Discs Veteran baskets were in good shape.
Plays like a shorter version of Horning's Hideout or Buxton, with lots of changes in terrain. Overall a very open course, you're throwing up and down hills or across fields.

Cons:

No tee pads, no tee signs or markers. 7 of the 10 holes had orange cones to mark where to play, but anything playing close to the onsite access road had no markings at all.
Also, despite the request to pack out trash, there weren't any garbage cans, or any bathrooms either.

Other Thoughts:

If the course had some kind of marker where to throw from and safe tee pads, I could see it being rated a 3.0 or 3.5.

I'm very thankful that the church has allowed their property to be used for disc golf.
