Pros:

Pros: Clearly Marked, Technical, Fun, Gorgeous New Innova Baskets

Clearly Marked: A carved wood sign welcomes players into a pristine parking lot. Pink ribbons lead towards Tee One and between holes throughout the course thereafter. Helpful tee signs at each tee pad. Downloaded the map before hand, never had to use it. Benches if you like to rest between holes.

Technical: Tight fairways, diverse doglegs, tunnels, a boulder or two to contend with. Holes bend both left and right and sometimes back again. Potential to be boxed off the green if your too aggressive, yet, come up short and you might miss the gap. Low but fair ceilings throughout. Par 5's feel reasonably classified, require at least two great shots before any long Eagle looks. BarkEater will challenge intermediate players to strategize.

Fun: Several unabashed guilt-free ace runs, a creative 218 Foot 'U-Shaped' Par 4, rolling elevation changes and scenic pond views along the front 9. Course plays along a hiking trail, heavily influencing its tightly defined shape. Despite playing through the woods, players are still offered up a couple of 300ft-400ft bombers to air it out over open clearings. Authentic, pure Adirondack landscape with beneficial New England style design influences.

Cons:

Cons: 'Virgin' Tee Pads, Potential Poison Ivy

Tee Pads: Hand Dug, mostly flat, clearly outlined, fortified with sand on occasion and adorned with flags for all 18, the current set up is by all means a positive and thoughtful start. Unfortunately, tree roots and small stumps protruding from the ground create a legitimate tripping hazard when winding up for longer drives and the edges of the tee pad can be uneven in spots.

Potential Poison Ivy: There appeared to be significant sections of poison ivy throughout the course. If someone with more insight can confirm otherwise, I'm happy to remove this comment as I'm not an expert.

Other Thoughts:

The course is fresh and still breaking in but shows almost unlimited upside. Some TLC went into this one and it shows (woodchips, sand, signage). The holes link together smoothly for the majority of the course and trail markers make several long walks a breeze. BarkEater really rolls out the welcome mat to first time players.

Course design highlights fundamental understanding of the game and works with rather than against the landscape. Unlike some other 'trail' style courses, BarkEater doesn't feel repetitive or forced. I'm giving 4 out of 5 based on quality and potential; course could reach upwards of 4.5 with better tee pads and few years of foot traffic to trample down brush off fairway.

Anticipate giving right of way to large packs of hikers passing through. I'm sure the owners would appreciate it you signed into the guest book at tee one. Owners should consider a donation box. The course appears to play along multiple property lines, let's make a good impression for our sport/community, please be respectful and clean.

Well worth the hour-plus drive from Plattsburgh, NY; might still be worth it to come over from VT if you can camp the night nearby. Only a 2 minute drive from Paul Smith's College.
