Roads and Paths... 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 10, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beech Hill Park is a beautiful park with a combination of forested and open areas. This course utilizes existing paths and roads to create fairways through the woods, along with several holes playing in an open area.

Hole lengths vary from 170' - 448'. The average hole length of 290' means that you don't need to be a bomber to enjoy this course.

Most of the wooded holes play pretty straight, as they go down paths or roads. Most of the open holes offer unobstructed throws to the baskets. Holes 7 and 10 play around wooded "corners" to introduce the only two doglegs (one right, one left) on the course.

Hole 16 uses an existing trail that connected two roads, and was the best wooded hole as the width was decent and the line was a cool "S-curve". Starting an overstable disc on an anhyzer and the having it fade back worked perfectly.

Hole 5 has an artificial rope island to make this otherwise bland 176' open toss a bit more interesting.

Tee signs were among the simplest that I've ever seen, with a single graphic "tree" used over and over to depict fairways. They worked well enough.

Tee pads were a combination of concrete blocks, carpet, and existing road. The concrete pads were smallish but some had been lengthened with a different type of block. They worked well enough. The tees off of roads were not marked, so I just played next to the tee sign.

Cons:

I imagine that the discussion went something like this:

Disc Golf Club - "We'd like to put a course in Beech Hill Park, eh".
Park Department - "OK, but you can't cut any trees or disturb anything, eh."

Too many of the holes on this course play up existing paths or roads, and the remainder play over open ground. What this course is badly missing is holes through the woods with actual designed fairways. In fact, the first three holes play directly up the same walking path, resulting in "fairways" that are 8 - 10' wide. Not ideal.

The walking path holes are too narrow, the road holes are wider but straight, and the open holes are kind of meh. We had to wait on one road hole for a parks truck to finish servicing a restroom. They were parked directly on the fairway/road.

Teepads would benefit from some consistency and I saw some concrete block stacked near a couple of the carpet tees, so hopefully that transition is underway.

Other Thoughts:

There are a lot of compromises with the hole designs in this park. Some holes are sketchy due to throwing down paths or roads where people or cars can come around blind corners.

Hole 9 (among others) plays directly down the park road to a basket set off into the grass. The basket is near a cabin building that is apparently used for a summer children's program. The morning I played there were a couple of cars parked near the basket, and 15 minutes later the hole was unplayable due to the arrival of about 8 more cars and dozens of kids.

Very tight fairways 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 12, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

It was right beside the highway, very easy to find especially if you want a quick round while road trippin'. The have brand new Innova Discatcher baskets. Not much other good things to say.

Cons:

This course is poorly designed. The first three holes are silly, they are 200+ feet down very narrow foot paths that are between 6' & 12' wide with heavy brush on both sides. If you kick off the path, you will need to putt directly back to the path before continuing. My girl friend quit playing the course after hole 2 because it was so frustrating. If you are with a newer player I recommend skipping the first three holes. There is also one more hole (hole 12?) that again super narrow and heavy brush but after 50' it has a small dogleg, so you have to long putt to the dogleg, short putt, then throw up the 10' wide alley to the road, then make a right to go to the basket.

The rest of the holes are either in the wide open or you are throwing up old roads. Becareful these roads are in use. I threw my drive on one hole, then a security car came over the rise and drove right over my disc!

All holes on the roads are short straight shots with a basket beside the road. The baskets in the open area are longer but relatively easy as they are wide open shots. Becareful on hole 7(?) we threw to the wrong basket as #7 is tucked into the woods while #13(?) was about 100' away in the open. After playing to the wrong basket we ended up going to the wrong tee and playing another couple of holes, then spent 15 minutes retracing our steps trying to figure out where we went wrong. There is one hole (hole 4?) that is about 150' where you throw over a parking lot to a green. There was someone parked there so I threw wide of the basket so not to hit the car (easy birdie if no cars there).

There are no tee pads or markings on the ground, only signs at each tee.

Other Thoughts:

Do not park at the first tee like we did. There is a gate just before the 1st tee which I think is supposed to be closed. When we finished, the gate was closed (open when we arrived) fortunately it was broken and we were able to swing it open even though it had a lock on it.

It is great to finally see disc golf growing in the maritimes. I've driven this route many times as an ex-maritimer and now getting the chance to stop on the way to Halifax and play a couple of courses was a real joy especially to get out and stretch the legs on a long drive.

Great Little Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 25, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I'll admit that I haven't played a ton of courses, but for someone who just started playing the game this was a great course. It had some tight little technical holes, but also had holes where you could really let loose and shake the cobwebs off your arm with little to no danger of losing a disc.

It was laid out well and there wasn't a ton of walking between holes and seemed to flow well. It makes good use of the entire park area. We literally had the entire park to ourselves, which hopefully will change over time.

Cons:

I was able to play my first round with someone who's played the course before so the navigation wasn't a problem, but I could see how it might be a little more challenging had I not been able to find a partner who played before.

I don't see a huge issue with the natural tee pads as that's pretty much what every course in this area has. It would be nice to have though in time.

Other Thoughts:

I really liked this course and I'm going to make time to play it even though it's 2 hours from my home. Lots of fun.

Beech Hill, what a thrill! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 24, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This public park has very little use from the general public, so playing an uninterrupted round is never a problem!
The judicious use of cross-country ski trails make for challenging tunnel shots, and the wide open areas of the park give room for the big guns to come out.
The course is easy to find off the highway (only about 2 minutes from highway to tee 1!) and a cinch to navigate.

Cons:

Some of the tunnels play pretty narrow, but this is more likely a con against my own game, rather than the course itself.

Other Thoughts:

The East Coast of Canada is one of the faster growing disc golf destinations in North America. There have been new installations, and/or expansions in each province over the past 2 years, and a 6 stop PDGA sanctioned tour that has begun.
A very exciting time for DG in the maritimes!

New Brunswick's Newest Course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 24, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beech Hill Park DGC plays throughout Beech Hill Park. The park seems to be divided between a wooded area and a large, centralilzed, grassy area. The disc golf course utilizes both areas almost equally.

The park is absolutely easy to find. It's located on exit 500 on the Trans Canadian Hi-Way. The entrance to the park is just off the freeway exit.

The course starts just to the right of the small recreation building. The tee signs are green metal. They give you the hole #, distance and both a Rec and Advanced par. There are no tee pads yet. The baskets are Discatchers with the yellow bands.

The holes in the open expanse give you a few opportunities to loosen up your arm. But to me, the signature hole on the course was # 16. It's 300' into the woods with kind of a "S" curve. What I like about this hole is after your first shot or two, the basket is visible through a very thick grove of trees, tempting you to try to cut the corner and thread one through the trees. I like holes that make you think or that force you to make choices that you might not ordinarily have to make on the course. This is one of those rare holes. Kudos!

Beautiful panoramic view from # 11.

Cons:

Probably, my least favorite type of disc golf holes are holes that play up walking paths or roads. This course starts off with three in a row and counts five more after those. The wooded area in this park is thin enough that wooded technical holes could have been carved out of the woods fairly easily.

No tee pads is always a problem and it would have to be a major problem in this wet climate. Plus, I wasn't always sure from where I was to tee off from?

As I walked up to the last hole, two kids from the summer camp being held in that tiny recreation building, we're having a great time spinning the # 18 basket around in circles. They thought it was some kind of spinning playground apparatus. That may not be the best location for that basket?

The Mosquitos were swaming on me before I reached the first basket. Bring your Backwoods Off!

Other Thoughts:

Some kind of permanent tee pads would help this course a lot, but I think the biggest improvement would be to carve out a few holes in the woods, to replace the paths/road holes. Starting the course with three such holes had me quickly losing interest.

I'm thrilled to see a new course here, The area, actually the entire province, seems starved for courses. I love to see disc golf gaining in popularity up here in the Maritimes. You guys are sooooo tough! You play all winter! Myself, I can barely force myself to play in a light rain. I'm getting so soft in my old age.
