Roads and Paths... 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 10, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beech Hill Park is a beautiful park with a combination of forested and open areas. This course utilizes existing paths and roads to create fairways through the woods, along with several holes playing in an open area.

Hole lengths vary from 170' - 448'. The average hole length of 290' means that you don't need to be a bomber to enjoy this course.

Most of the wooded holes play pretty straight, as they go down paths or roads. Most of the open holes offer unobstructed throws to the baskets. Holes 7 and 10 play around wooded "corners" to introduce the only two doglegs (one right, one left) on the course.

Hole 16 uses an existing trail that connected two roads, and was the best wooded hole as the width was decent and the line was a cool "S-curve". Starting an overstable disc on an anhyzer and the having it fade back worked perfectly.

Hole 5 has an artificial rope island to make this otherwise bland 176' open toss a bit more interesting.

Tee signs were among the simplest that I've ever seen, with a single graphic "tree" used over and over to depict fairways. They worked well enough.

Tee pads were a combination of concrete blocks, carpet, and existing road. The concrete pads were smallish but some had been lengthened with a different type of block. They worked well enough. The tees off of roads were not marked, so I just played next to the tee sign.

Cons:

I imagine that the discussion went something like this:

Disc Golf Club - "We'd like to put a course in Beech Hill Park, eh".
Park Department - "OK, but you can't cut any trees or disturb anything, eh."

Too many of the holes on this course play up existing paths or roads, and the remainder play over open ground. What this course is badly missing is holes through the woods with actual designed fairways. In fact, the first three holes play directly up the same walking path, resulting in "fairways" that are 8 - 10' wide. Not ideal.

The walking path holes are too narrow, the road holes are wider but straight, and the open holes are kind of meh. We had to wait on one road hole for a parks truck to finish servicing a restroom. They were parked directly on the fairway/road.

Teepads would benefit from some consistency and I saw some concrete block stacked near a couple of the carpet tees, so hopefully that transition is underway.

Other Thoughts:

There are a lot of compromises with the hole designs in this park. Some holes are sketchy due to throwing down paths or roads where people or cars can come around blind corners.

Hole 9 (among others) plays directly down the park road to a basket set off into the grass. The basket is near a cabin building that is apparently used for a summer children's program. The morning I played there were a couple of cars parked near the basket, and 15 minutes later the hole was unplayable due to the arrival of about 8 more cars and dozens of kids.
