Where is my Ace run? 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 27, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Harke Park is a nice park with a walking path, playground, restrooms and a big open multi-use field. The course plays roughly the path of the walking path for the first seven holes, then loops around the playground to get you back basically where you started. In theory it could be an OKish 9'er one day; the park is very new and the trees that were planted are still young, so the site has some potential.

Cons:

The most obvious issue is that there are no marked tees or tee signs. You get to the park and see baskets and then...what? Once we played around to hole 6 we saw a red block in the ground and thought it might be the tee for hole 9; that was confirmed when we found a similar marker where the tee for hole 8 would be. We played the course again with a map and looked for more red markers; we found none.

The design follows the walking path too closely so the shots keep shooting over/down the path, creating a safety issue. When the park is busy with kids riding bikes and people walking, it's essentially unplayable.

The park gently slopes; hole three shoots slightly uphill and hole 9 shoots slightly downhill. Other than that, the holes shoot across the elevation giving the park the appearance of being totally flat. The poor use of the very little elevation they had was disappointing.

The kicker of the design is that all of the holes are supposed to be 333'. Little 9-hole rec courses need Ace runs, and this one has none. Since seven of the shots are flat ground shots and there are so few trees, the shots are monotonous. Some variety in the distances is needed. Fortunately, you can't find the tees so you can modify that on the fly.

All of the baskets are mounted in these high sleeves that come up to about the basket attachment like you would have if you were in a high flood risk area. It was odd since it didn't appear to be in a high flood risk area. The basket for hole seven looks like someone tried to pull it out of the ground with a truck, and the pole buckled at the point where the high sleeve ended. It's mangled, regardless.

Other Thoughts:

The site has some potential for a nice rec course, but the course that is there is a dud. A redesign that does a better job of avoiding the walking path, uses more up/down shots in the design and has some variety in the distances would be a huge upgrade to this course. As it stands, it's best used as a practice site.

I’d Like To Nominate The Big Nine Course For Having The Worst Design Feature Anywhere! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 10, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Harke Park is a brand new park so many of the trees haven't grown up yet. So the park is relatively wide open. There are signs. There are no pads. There are nine baskets. They are pretty red/blue Monkey Trap models. I first thought that they were randomly spaced around the park but then I read the course information sheet. It turns out that each basket is 333 feet from the tee. What???? Did the designer only have a 333' tape measure? Does the designer know that golf holes are supposed to be different lengths? This is definitely one of the strangest designs I have ever seen. There is a bright side to this. Since there are no tee pads, how will you know if you're teeing off from the requisite 333 feet. Should you bring a 333 foot tape?

I thought I had solved the mystery of the missing tee pads. I originally thought that the tee pads were the concrete pads next to the benches which are spaced around the walking track that circles the park. That theory worked for maybe the first two holes but then proved false.

A previous reviewer stated that he found these red dots on the ground that he identified as tiny red tee pads. I actually saw one of these red dots and had no idea what it was.

Cons:

No signs.

No tee pads.

Course is totally flat.

Mostly wide open throws.

Each basket is 333 feet.

Walking path is often busy.

Other Thoughts:

The Big Nine Course is a poster boy for what not to do when designing and constructing a disc golf course. Other than being flat, this is actually a pretty fair park for a disc golf course. However, this course was built without signs and tee pads and then you add on the ridiculous idea of making each hole the exact same length. The end result is a below average course.

Is what it was (back in 2014) 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 5, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

There is a course there.....
It has nine baskets that are easy to see...
It makes decent use of the maturing trees in the park.

Cons:

Same ones as all the 2014 reviewers sited... no tee pads, no signage, and basically flat.

Strange configuration of the tee boxes in relation to the walking path.

Other Thoughts:

Looks like someone wanted a course there but didn't want to "ruin" the park by adding tee pads and signage.

As previous reviewer sited, traffic could be a problem. I had to throw around a kite flying family by the picnic table just off the third airway.

It seems as though the previous reviewers were expecting more to come back then in 2014.

It's now 2017, guess it's not improving!!

strange layout with paths? 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 28, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Close to the outlet mall. Nice baskets.

Cons:

Couldn't find boxes couldn't even find worn spot in the grass. Most of the tee boxes throw over the path. Just look at the map. This place is DANGEROUS. I was there on a nice day and it was unplayable.Kids were lapping so fast on their bikes it got a little frustrating.

Other Thoughts:

Will try again but only if I can get there early in the morning.I only rate this poor because of the path in front of tee tee pads.seems dangerous to me.

Developing Course, but a nice start 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 31, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

* Nice, new baskets
* Well maintained
* Bathrooms/Playground/Picnic area(s)

Cons:

*Lack of signs and tees, I did find a few numbered squares in the ground (they are red) but I didn't find them for all holes, so you kind of guess where you have to tee off from.

* Mostly wide open shots. #2 is tucked away in some trees, a few trees on #7, and completely unneeded double mando on #9 (it's the direct path to the basket).
*Some pedestrian traffic, but no one got in the way.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, I was happy to find the course on my recent vacation. I played it twice for 18 holes, and while there isn't a lot of variety, I've played worse courses. The hardest part was guessing where the tees should be. As I mentioned I found a few markers but they are burried in the ground. THe course map on this site was very helpful.

As the trees mature through the park I can see this being a pretty decent 9 hole course for the area. If I find myself back in the area I would take people there to introduce them to the game, or practice some alternative shots.

coming along nicely 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 1, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

great to see new coarse's popping up, nice park setting, well maintained, nice baskets ( monkey trap).

Cons:

lacks signage and tee pads, but it is a young coarse and still under development.. not much elevation change

Other Thoughts:

A fun little nine hole with all of the holes measuring out at 333 feet, lightly wooded, good use of available trees, overall it is coming along nicely... very playable as is, should be very nice when finished....
