Is it bad?

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 9, 2024 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Very good to excellent tee pads and baskets
Good course flow
Easy access off a major highway
Some variety
Good course for transition from beginner to intermediate
Low chance of lost discs

Cons:

Eight holes are crammed into one open area
Many holes that lack character or challenge
Lacks a good warm-up area or practice basket
Surrounded by better courses

Other Thoughts:

One of my favorite stories about the army came from an acquaintance who was a faculty member at West Point in the English department. Apparently, one of the brass thought that rather than pay some Madison Avenue ad firm to develop a new slogan they'd have the brilliant minds of the military academy come up with something good. After many seconds of intense brain-storming, they suggested "The Army – It's Not As Bad As You'd Think."

So if I started off describing Boone Woods by saying, "It's a par 3 course and all of the holes are straight shots and most of them are in open fields" you'd probably be thinking two stars at best. But…

A few of the holes feature tricky wooded lines. #6 is a nasty piece of work that I've given up on trying to drive and now hope to settle for an approach shot into the heavily guarded basket. A bad or unlucky drive can leave you with absolutely no shot at getting close to the basket. It's listed at 390', but feels like 450'. #13 (long tee) and #15 are woods holes that need a degree of accuracy and can present some tough putting options if you fail to park the drive or approach. Neither are particularly long, but I've never been able to birdie either of them consistently.

How about holes that almost anyone can ace, but are far from sure of birdying? Yep, Boone has a few of those. #4 is a downhill hole with the basket guarded by a large tree to the right and rough to the left. Most of the time, I'll attempt a big hyzer in front of the nearby outdoor stage. Most often, I'm swatted down in contempt by the guardian tree. #8 and #10 are downhill shots to elevated baskets. In general, I'm not a fan and find these a little gimmicky, but a few times during bad rounds ace runs are about the only thing I could really get excited about and both of these holes can provide them.

Got a sense of humor? Apparently, someone else did as well. The #3 basket is adjacent to a playground with a swing set inside C1. I'm not sure there are many things tougher on the ego than laying up to avoid the kids only to have them laugh when you boink the subsequent putt.

Something else? Boone Woods is a good choice for bringing your friends who have thrown a few discs and maybe played a round or two at the local par two courses. They can air out their throws and generally not have to worry about losing a disc or being buried. They might even experience an ace run or two. I also think it's a good "ramp-up" course for players moving from beginner to intermediate. Combined with Lincoln Ridge, it can be a great tune-up for tackling Idlewild.

I guess it's worth mentioning that Boone Woods is surrounded by better (in my opinion) courses. Idlewild is to the west, Devou to the north, Lincoln Ridge to the east, and to the south, the slick little nine holer, South Fork. That said, Boone does have a role to play, A course where you can go out and just throw the disc without worrying about blind shots, water carries, fighting through the brush, or 100' roll-aways. It's ok to have courses like Boone Woods. It gets the job done.
So maybe give Boone Woods a try. It might not be as bad as you'd think.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 19, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

- New tee signs
- Alternate baskets and tees
- Significant recent course maintenance, including quite a bit of new mulching
- Close to Idlewild, and easily accessible from major highways
- Mostly disc golf-only space, aside from a couple of holes on the back 9
- Low risk of disc loss

Cons:

- 4 & 5 seem like filler holes...straight downhill on 4, and back up the hill on 5. They kind of remind me of 22 & 23 at Lincoln Ridge
- Alternate basket on 6 is within just a few feet of three small trees, and isn't really necessary, as this is already one of the best, and most challenging holes on the course
- Mounded baskets on 8 and 10 are understandable, but a bit much (probably taller than necessary, especially on 8)
- Being all Par 3s, a couple holes in the long position are unreachable for a majority of players. Especially 9, being uphill all the way, at about 420 feet.

Other Thoughts:

This course is definitely improving for the better, and as previously mentioned, has seen a number of new trees planted, which will eventually change the character of the course dramatically. It's a pretty good layout, with the only potential interference coming between the long baskets of 7 & 9, which are both currently in place, and in relatively close proximity.

The first highlight comes at 3, playing out of some trees, into an open space, at which point, the hole crosses a ravine/creek, and finishes uphill and to the right. I imagine you could place a nasty flex forehand through the gap, and across the ravine, but for most, this is going to be a par.

The next hole of note is 6, playing through a wooded area, again down and across the same creek, and then sharply uphill to the basket. Currently, the pin is in the long position, and as previously noted, is very closely guarded by some small trees. This is a really nice hole.

#10 is a nice 200 ft. downhill ace run, with a guardian tree to the front right of the basket.

Perhaps the biggest single change is on 14, which previously was a wooded, straight-ahead 200 footer, again going across a ravine. However, a new tee placement has been set off to the right of the original tee, and is closely guarded. It was very difficult to spot this basket from the tee (as in, I couldn't see it at all). A really cool wooded hole, but the line to the new basket is going to be difficult.

Lastly, I really like the change they made on 17, moving the basket a little more downhill, and to the right. This was previously a wide open, boring putter into a wide open green. The new basket brings a little more variety to the hole, and definitely gives it a little more character.

All in all, this course has improved substantially, and should continue to do so, as time goes on. This is an enjoyable round for a wide range of skill levels, and a solid contributor to the NKY disc golf scene.

Developing Open, Soon to be Wooded Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 4, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Boone Woods is a lovely, well-maintained course just minutes from Idlewild, but it's strong in its own right. It's important to note that this course is rapidly changing. Originally, the course was almost all wide open 300' shots, but during the 2020 season a major effort was made to plan for the course future. 2 baskets were put on mounds and elevated, several holes were redesigned, and alternate pins were designed. But most importantly, several dozen saplings were planted that will make this course far more interesting and challenging.
With that said, here are some additional pros:
-Lovely, well-maintained park with shelters, restrooms, and plenty of parking
- Most of the course is on disc golf only space so pedestrians are rarely an issue
-Many holes that allow you to work on distance
-Nice teepads and baskets, as well as elevated baskets on 2 holes
- Hole 3 is a bit of a signature hole, playing over a wooded ravine. 6 is also a challenging wooded hole with a few tight lines.
-Arrows on baskets to next teepad when navigation is tricky.
- When the trees come in this place will be really tough, but really nice. I'd likely raise my review to a 4 star.

Cons:

-Until this course develops a lot of the holes feel repetitive, throwing back in forth in a wide open field.
-This course definitely gets crowded in the summer.
-If you don't have consistent 300' power par is likely unreachable.
-There's a pavilion by hole 5 that is known to have discs get stuck on top (if it happens there's a phone number to call. The park district is great about retrieving them).
-The elevated baskets are on raised ground, so they are really high. Maybe a bit much of a gimmick for some.
-Long walks from 11 to 12 and again from 16 to 17 (go behind the tennis court for 17)
-Navigation can be tricky at a few spots. Once you finish 3 you'll see a teepad to the left, that is for hole 6. Go behind the playground for 4s teepad.

Other Thoughts:

It all comes down to when you read this review. It's currently early 2021. The more the trees develop, the more exciting this course will get. With such a supportive parks district I can't wait to see the results!

Pros:

Located just minutes away from the world-renowned Idlewild, Boone Woods is the perfect compliment and pretty much the exact opposite. However, it provides enough variety to keep things fun and light. While many nearby courses get a lot of attraction, this one might have the biggest chucker/homer course feel to it on the KY side.

The course starts out with many open shots, contending with a few trees over slight but often present rolling hills. Hole 4 is the exception here - a heavily wooded shot over a ravine to a protected basket. This was definitely one of the highlights of the course, one of the more contentious par 3's. The back 9 features more technical shots, some being very short and tight.

Overall, this is great for rec players and a casual round with enough variety.

Cons:

Tee signs were pretty rough when we played and it looks like a basket or two has been switched without re-numbering.

A few holes have very thick rough off the fairway, which can away from the casual type of round that it offers.

Traffic seems to be an issue at times with heavy course play and other park activities going on nearby.

While the front 9 flowed very well, navigating the back 9 was confusing at times.

Other Thoughts:

I'm sure this has been said in many reviews, but my favorite part of the course was its casual round immediately after playing at Idlewild. I was a proud chucker after all of that. Definitely a good one for rounds like that.

It's There 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 17, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The course flows very easily from 1-9, offering several open drives for beginners working on adding distance and accuracy to their game. The teepads are solid. The baskets are visible and catch well. The back 9 offers a very different look than the front 9, consisting mostly of wooded shots.

Cons:

I'm not too familiar with the history of this course, but having played it several times over the years I know how to get around. However, if this is your first time, find a map or play with a local for 10-18, because it does not flow well once you get past 12. Even getting to Hole 10 from 9 is rough if you haven't looked it up previously; you need to walk to the other side of the creek and tee off from the other side of the entrance road that leads to the parking lot.

16 stands out like a sore thumb. The basket actually has 13 on it so I suspect it was moved from a different hole location, but there is an obscene walk from 15's pin to 16's tee, and then from 16's pin to 17's tee.

The signs on this course are in severe need of replacement. Several are missing, most are grafitti-ed (people love chronicling their aces on the signs, even though most holes allow for an easy ace run), and the remaining ones are inaccurate.

Some people say that 1-9 is too open or repeatedly offers the same look. I agree to a degree, but since that half of the course is much more organized than the second half, I don't see it as a significant issue.

Other Thoughts:

This course is only worth playing if you are a beginner or are playing with one, or you live nearby and want a quick round. There are several better options in the area (albeit also much more difficult) that will serve experienced players better.

Pros:

Boone Woods Park is a casual city park course. Elevation is often a factor in ways both significant and subtle. The best holes here combine such elevation changes with a moderate degree of woodedness to make for tricky tee shots that force some risk versus reward decisions. These holes are complemented by many more-open ones that provide a more casual feel to your round. There's a mix of longer par 3s with birdie and ace runs. The difficulty level here is relatively low for players of even a modest level of ability. The course plays quite quickly.

Cons:

Lots of open holes and short-ish distances make for many boring approach shots if you can't set yourself up for a 2. Many birdies are themselves not particularly hard-earned. The wooded holes are a nice change of pace, but many are quite short. There's little demand on line-shaping due to the minimal presence of obstacles on most holes. The overall design is straightforward, with nothing to distinguish it from any other run-of-the-mill city park course.

Some holes have punishing rough if you go off target or take an unfortunate tree hit. These instances really reduce the new player friendliness of the course, something it would otherwise be good for.

Other Thoughts:

The best thing Boone Woods has going for it is its proximity to Idlewild. Come lick your wounds here after playing that beast.

Pros:

The course is located in a nice park with tennis and basketball courts as well as bathrooms. There are nice signs for each hole. The wooded holes were a little more interesting and provided a little more challenge. The park was clean and well maintained.

Cons:

The majority of the holes played over pretty open terrain with minimal obstructions. Seems like the course gets pretty crowded with a lot of younger people. Some holes are close to paths and soccer field, which might make it difficult when busy.

A couple of the baskets were mislabeled, which made navigation a little more difficult.

Other Thoughts:

A good course for beginners or for those looking for a confidence booster. Not a lot of memorable holes, but hole 4 was probably the most fun.

A good course to play a night/glow round on. Navigation is relatively easy and no real hazards anywhere. Seems like a safe park to be in at night and you can park by the apartments near by and access the course from the paved trail.

Beginer Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 12, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a great beginner course. For new players, the front nine seems long at around 300 feet each, but they are mostly open. This allows new players to work on distance first without getting discouraged about always being in the rough, but those players soon realize that they need to control their distance in order to improve their game. Missing your spot by 40 feet is the same as throwing 40 feet shorter on your drive. Through the front half of the back nine, it is very technical for newer players, even if the lines seem easy to more advanced players. These holes teach players to hit their lines exactly, or else the trees will put you in a tough spot. Even so, the trees are not so thick as to become discouraging. The final holes open up again to try out your distance. The baskets and teepads are nice, and the course is fairly well-kept, and even though the rough gets pretty rough in the summer, the county seems to spray for the local thorn bushes, so you won't normally get too torn up on an errant throw. The layout is also very good. It is also worth noting that this course is listed as a straight par 3. For beginners, this is a very difficult number to break. This gives an additional challenge to encourage new players to keep playing: even though it is difficult to achieve, when you look at each hole and what you feel like you should be able to get on each one, you should break par every time. But when a couple birdies escape you and a bad drive leaves you with a bogey, it is hard for new players to recover.

Cons:

This course is far from perfect. For one, it becomes repetitive as you play it more. You tend to end up looking at the same shots over and over again, rarely finding an interesting or difficult lie. Also, this course tends to favor RHBH shots, without having any serious hyzers, or annys, and only a couple low ceiling shots. It lacks a balance of shot selection, which again becomes repetitive. This park is also popular among local teens, which results in some unsavory graffiti on the course and a tendancy for there to be trash laying around the course, often right next to the trash bucket by the teepad. The course also tends to be very busy during peak hours in season: I have often found myself waiting on two or three groups by hole 3.

Other Thoughts:

All around, this is a nice park, and a great course to learn the game at. If you can get here during down hours, during the day during the week or early mornings, I would definitely suggest going here to introduce players to the game or get a quick practice round in. Otherwise, though, there are other places localy where you can go for some better work. For my future reviews, this is one of five parks I will be referencing for comparison, along with Burnet Woods, Licoln Ridge, Walton, and AJ Jolly.

In the Shadows of Idlewild 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 22, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Boone Woods DGC, located in the shadow of the mighty Idlewild, offers a much easier brand of disc golf than its more famous neighbor. Located in a grassy suburban park, this 18-hole course is sparsely dotted with mature trees for the first 10 or so holes before working through a small patch of woods and back into the open for the finish.
- Concrete tees, signage, baskets, and the other park amenities are all in decent working shape.
- The wooded holes (#'s 13, 14, and 15) on the back nine are by far the standouts of this course despite their shorter lengths.
- Although the elevation here is of the gentle rolling type, there's enough for it to be successfully implemented in the design. #'s 7, 8, and 13 all use the elevation to spice things up a bit.
- Perfect companion to Idlewild. Play pre-Idlewild for a quick warm-up. Play post-Idlewild to regain your dignity.

Cons:

- The front nine is repetitiously open. A lot of these holes have similar distances, making them even more similar.
- A lot of litter (especially beer cans) was well, you know, littered about.
- This course seems to be predominately inhabited by bag-less groups of 6+, all throwing multiple putts on each hole, and generally exhibiting poor understanding of basic golf etiquette.
- Several holes on the front nine are kinda squashed together and a possible conflict when the park is busy. #'s 6 and 7 are especially bad with the hill in play.

Other Thoughts:

- Boone woods doesn't have much going for it to distinguish it from a lot of other predominately open, mostly flat-ish, suburban courses. The back nine makes a valiant effort to boost the excitement factor, but falls just a bit short. In the end, Boone Woods can't escape feeling like two okay-ish 9-holers slapped together to come up with a full 18.

Family Park and a good effort 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 30, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course in Burlington, Kentucky is just a couple of miles from Idelwild, and presents an entirely different experience: Rec to Intermediate players should be able to break par here. The redesign of this course uses more of the park, and adds variety from a fairly open front nine to a moderately wooded middle, both of which loop back to the lower parking lot. They've used the rolling hills and woods in the park well, and yet there are no seriously steep climbs or walking hazards anywhere (unless there've been torrential rains recently).

There are no overly demanding holes, except possibly the long-ish #4 which sneaks through trees, a ravine, and a bridge to the top corner of the course. Possibly included in the tough holes would be #3, which finishes crossing a low gulley and some mature trees, with the added requirement of avoiding going long up to the playground behind the basket.

The 'new' holes start with #10, which plays longer (uphill over a gulley) than is listed, and the park has put in a really nice T-shaped bridge there. Speaking of the park, there are activities galore for the family, as it is situated behind a YMCA (and its pool): a wooded amphitheater, shelters, playgrounds, tennis and basketball courts, horseshoes, a soccer field, restrooms, etc.

Cons:

There are only buckets hanging on the tee signs for trash (though the signs clearly have room for full-sized bins beneath the two posts, and folks generally put their trash here if there isn't a receptacle). There are no benches. Some areas seem to hold on to marshy water in rainy seasons, especially around 300' off the tee on #3 (down at the bottom).

Holes 3 and 15 are aimed straight at playground areas. Hole 7 is a difficult, blind over-hill shot with the park's fill dirt pile in the fairway. Holes 11 and 12 are too close together.

Hole 13 was removed after some challenges in that corner of the park. It has recently been replaced with an added hole after #16: walk across the drive towards the basketball courts and shoot a hyzer (rhbh) around the line of three park tree: about 250' (but don't go long into the gulley!). Then walk toward the restrooms by the tennis courts to return to #17.

Finally, there are some relatively long and/or hidden treks from basket to tee on 6, 7,10, 16, (now 13), and 17, so working from a map or playing with someone who knows the course, would be beneficial.

Other Thoughts:

This course is a popular spot for casual and recreational players, and usually hosts the fall Discraft Ace Race event for the greater Cincinnati area.

It's a great introduction course for those who aren't at a skill level to play Idlewild. Also a great place For Pro's and Other tournament golfers to practice their upshots. Built in a very nice recreational park that has just about any activity you can imagine for outdoors. Fun to play.

Cons:

Lots of profane graffiti. Basket missing. Some holes a little close to playgrounds.

Other Thoughts:

Not a bad course by any means. It was actually fun to play and a great wind down after playing 24 holes at Idlewild just 2 miles up the road. If you're in the area it's worth checking out. I would defiantly play again. Anyone who can't see the value of having this course in the area is blind to what this sport is all about. No matter what skill level you may be at it's always nice to play something small and fun. Remember we all had to start somewhere and not everyone can play a course like Idlewild.

~Long & short tee shots also add to the variety

Cons:

~On the easier side of the difficulty spectrum

Other Thoughts:

Played on a very warm and sunny Autumn afternoon while heading back to Ohio. The entire park was bustling and for good reason as there are numerous options on how to spend some outdoor time throughout this complex. The 1st handful of holes are long wide open bombs and could use some additional trees or other obstacles to up the difficulty. Minor elevation changes throughout, but fairly level for the most part. After about the first half you delve into a more wooded area and the holes throughout this section are fairly short and straightforward shots. Putters or mids off the tees are plenty to give birdie opportunities and easy pars. The last couple of holes open back up and lead you right back to the parking lot. Got around easily and quickly even with a handful of other groups playing. Worth a stop for a casual round.

Nice little layout 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 27, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice flow that leads to quick play. Even if you are chillin', you can rock a round in about an hour.

The signage is solid. Each tee sign identifies length, ideal line and direction to next tee.

Navigation is a snap. There are really only two points where the next pad is not in eye shot. To get from hole 9 to hole 10 you will need to walk along the road to begin the back nine in a seperate part of the park. Also, from 16 to 17 is a short trip across a parking lot. There is a big sign directing you as you hole out on 16.

The front 9 loops you back around to your vehicle. It's always nice when the front 9 and back nine end at a central point.

Concrete pads and Innova baskets...all in good shape.

Cons:

The course is out of balance on the open side. It's also on the short side. Being short is not really a con though, as long as you know it. You can still have short courses that have nice balance/diversity.

No significant hazards come to mind. The hole info shows alot of elevation and water, but IMO, it was relatively minor. This is a simple course. There are no mandos or landing zones. This course definitely lends itself to beginners.

Basket 13 was missing. Shame, it looked to be a nice, tight line.

Other Thoughts:

The front nine and back nine are actually distinctly different.

The front is entirely open, with the exception of hole 4 (my fav hole on the course). The front also boasts most of the distance. You may want some fairway drivers for these holes. I went back and forth between Wasps and Stalkers on most of this nine.

The back is much shorter and dense. I would like to call these holes technical but they lack diverse lines. Even though you have more trees to deal with, the line to the pin is still typically a strait shot. I used my putter off many of these tee's.

The maintenance of this course was very nice. It was well mowed and clean. Sexy.

This is a nice little course. That pretty much says it all. It would be a great "ace race" course.

Pros:

A nice course for begginers and pros alike. All holes are par 3 so keeping score is very easy. PLay by yourself and should only take an hour. Play with friends and only adds aboutt a half an hour too it. This course is located about three miles From Idlewild so it plays as a great warm up course to get loose for the big one.

Cons:

Not many Cons but from repetitive play I have noticed the variety of ppl that play the course and some of these people are to say the least immature. A couple of the Tee's have latex paint splttered on them making the drive a little sketchy not wanting to slip on the paint. Also a couple of the tees signs have been defaced or even removed

Other Thoughts:

All in all a nice easy course to play especially after a long day at work

Pros:

Quiet, simple, friendly course with just enough to make a good course:
• Basics well in-hand: baskets, pads and signs all in good shape.
• Moderately rolling terrain makes holes play longer/shorter than posted distances.
• Pretty straightforward, with just enough trees to add reasonable difficulty (to what would otherwise be a point and shoot course out in the open).
• Just enough distance on the Front 9 to make drivers worthwhile.
• Just technical enough on the Back 9 where control is really an asset over distance.
• Nice flow from to hole and wonderful signs make navigation pretty much foolproof. Tee markers provide distance, line, and point towards the next tee. Just check the tee sign to see which direction to head after you putt out and walk till to see the next tee marker.
• Front and Back nine are two separate loops which start/end near the parking lot. Easy to play quick rounds, finish a round you started, or play a couple of rounds on the longer more open Front, or the shorter, more technical Back.
• Not much time searching for discs.

Cons:

There's really not a lot "wrong" with this course, but...
• Not very challenging (then again, Idlewild's just minutes away).
• A few holes on the Back 9 have tees that are close to the previous basket, so make sure everyone ahead is well clear of you.
• Back 9 takes you through areas of a multi-use park that are not dedicated to disc golf or close to people's back yards; caution and courtesy are warranted.

Other Thoughts:

Although not epic or demanding in any way, there's certainly no crime in being decent.

Definitely one of the best beginner courses I've seen anywhere. Many beginner courses are simple pitch & putt, featuring all short holes, or holes completely in the open, usually on fairly flat ground. As mentioned earlier, this course just enough rolling terrain for novices to see how elevation changes make holes play shorter or longer. Just enough trees to appreciate that disc golf requires shot shaping, rather than simply going straight at the basket. Just enough variety to require drivers, mids and putters from the tee. Just enough distance (on the front) that most people playing for the first few times will think that holing out in 3 strokes is a healthy stretch. No denying this course is solid, well designed, and stands on its own merit.

The few holes with water were dry when I played, but even if present, would be shallow enought to not present a disc loss risk.

BONUS info: located quite in the heart of suburbia with all kinds of eateries nearby. YMCA right next to course was happy to let me take a shower for a small donation, and Boone County Public Library close enough for me to write this review and post it immediately after my round.
