The Amenities Are Great At The Lake! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 22, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Cachuma Lake now has two 18-hole courses both with the same great amenities. Everything that was done here was done right. There is a $10 charge to get into the park but gives you unlimited access to two courses. There is a nice big course sign complete with map. The tee pads are nice large trapezoid shaped pads. There is a practice basket. The baskets are pretty, orange DGA models with the hard to read red numbers. The signs are absolutely divine. They are a pretty green color with kinda of a different shape with a large easily read number, map and 3-5 basket positions. Each sign has a sponsor's information on it. There is always a bolt next to the current position. No guessing the distances here. There are large logs cut in half and laminated for the benches. There are brooms at many of the tees.

The course starts across the street from the park's little store. Being this is a state park and so you are hereby dealing with a government bureaucracy, parking seems to be really big issue. There is a sign on the street directing disc golfers to the proper and authorized parking area. The other course, the Mohawk course, has the same emphasis on where we are to park.

The golf is good but lacks the wow factor for me. The park is flat, mostly open so many of the holes are the point and shoot variety. The distances are also fairly consistent, no really long holes but no little short Ace runs either. I believe the last two holes were the only ones over 400' and they weren't too stimulating.

I did like # 11 in the A position and # 16, both which features double Mandos.

Cons:

I didn't find the on-line map to be particularly easy to decipher.

Navigation, in general, was a little sketchy. I never found the # 8 tee. A couple of times I walked around trying to find my way. The 10th tee is tricky to locate. It's behind the grocery store. I was looking beside the store.

After playing # 12, you have to backtrack most of the way to get to the # 13 pad.

And after playing 13 you have a really long walkout to # 14. Granted it's a lovely nature walk but I was here to throw discs not hike the Pacific Crest Trail. I hadn't brought my Bibler I-tent. The ranger who showed me where # 10 was told me about this long walkout and said all you have to do is follow the trail. Well, he forgot to say anything about the point where the trails forks and there is no sign to help us golfers. Note; At the fork, don't go up, keep going straight and you might eventually find # 14. I went up the trail which brought me to # 16.

Other Thoughts:

This course has a nice design which seems to stay out the camp sites and other areas where we might be in competition with the camping crowds. $10 is not too painful for 36 holes of golf. I enjoyed this course more than the Mohawk course although the Mohawk course has the two holes which I liked best out of the 36.

Pros:

uncrowded
general store has food and a few discs.
some interesting holes.
nice singletrack hike between holes on back 9.
water available.
nice grass in the winter.
so-cal weather- play all year!
quality signs, t-pads, baskets.

Cons:

not much elevation change or variety
many of holes are similar, pretty easy.
we played in December, when no one was camping, but I can see how this would be an issue in the warmer months when people are all over the fairways using the park.

Other Thoughts:

There are two courses at this campsite. We first played this 18, then found the Mowhark course to the NE. Super fun day.
Highly recommend playing in the colder months to avoid conflict-crowds.

FRIJOLES @ Cachuma 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 11, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Played here last weekend & had a blast.
Their is actually 2 full courses here,
The Cachuma course that's at the entrance of the campground & the other is the Mohawk course that is literally right down the road inside the campground. I personally like the Mohawk course better. Alot more woodsy then the original course. It's more secluded & plays through the old campsites.
Both courses have awesome t-pad signs & fresh concrete pads.
Their is also a small campground store that sells beer. Oh yeah & water / snacks. Haha!!

Cons:

Pay to play. $10 per car but Definitely worth it because you can walk around with open containers. So... cheers!!
Heads up with the poison oak on the Mohawk course

Other Thoughts:

Perfect spot to camp overnight and knock out both courses.

The best tee signs made! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 14, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The new tee signs here are an excellent pattern for every course to follow. I heard they were created by a guy in Oregon. They look very similar to the great tee signs at Milo McGiver near Porland so the same person may have done both, but these are even better. There are many things to like about these, but notice in the pictures that these tee signs have a bolt that tells you clearly which basket position is active. Milo's don't have the identifying bolt, but still have the attractive picture with basket locations.

Near a lake with scenic views.

There is a color course map, which is needed, at the entrance station if you ask for it when you pay the $10 entry fee.

The 5-10 minute hike between 13's basket and 14's tee is beautiful, if you are not in a rush and have time to enjoy it.

Nice benches have been installed.

Good signage has been added throughout to keep you from getting lost, which was my biggest problem the first time I came here.

The tee pads are concrete with a rough finish. They are long enough for a good run up.

There are nice steps installed after 13 to help you onto the nature trail to 14.

There's a porta potty at 14, which is nice since it's a remote area.

Cons:

There were too many people on the course. I waited on the tenth tee for 5 minutes while a mom and dad were on a nature hike with their 2 kids looking at a lizard. I eventually asked them to move.

In the fourth fairway I had to wait for a school bus with kids walking around.

After the 13th basket it's a long way to get to the 14th tee. This is a CON if you're in a hurry, but a PRO if you have the time to enjoy the scenic nature hike.

Without the map I would've never found the tenth tee, which is behind the store across the street.

It's an RV park mostly, which means there's a lot of people around.

Other Thoughts:

What a difference more than 8 months make! The guys and/or girls working on this course deserve a gold star. Since I was there the first time in early April they have put in great tee signs, as well as many other improvements.

I uploaded a picture of 16, which includes the new sign next to the nice tee pad and the new bench. The other pictures posted as of now only show the tee views with the old tee signs and don't show the new benches.

Great addition to Central Coast 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 11, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Huge park
-Lots of parking
-Plays fair to FH and BH players
-Rewards power and precision
-Oversized teepads
-Plenty of mandos and road OB
-Plays through open fields and technical Oak Trees
-Variety of distances
-Very scenic
-Park store with everything, even gas!
-Friendly atmosphere
-Hole 11
-Nature hike between holes 13 and 14

Cons:

-Pay to play ($10)
-Minimal signange (think they're working on it)
-Park goers may interfere with fairways
-Too many open holes
-Technical holes could be more technical
-Some fairways are close to the entrance road
-No benches or water fountains after hole 1
-Not really a con but armed rangers are present

Other Thoughts:

What a wonderful addition to the Central Coast disc golf scene! The course starts with some fairly open shots (typically in the 350 ft range) with one or two large obstacles (usually old Oak Trees.) The course then has some mandos and you head into a more technical Oak grove with some elevation and low ceilings. The course meanders back into the open, then you head to the back side of the course. Hole 10 is a little gimmicky, but you still need to throw about 320' to get there. You then throw though a mix of open and wooded holes. Hole 11 is the signature hole here. It has a double mando straight off the tee then HARD dogleg left. The basket is perched against a remarkably steep drop with the lake in the background. Beautiful! You go on a bit of a nature hike between holes 13 and 14, even crossing over a cool little wood bridge. This is a very neat aspect of the course to me. Hole 14 is an uphill shot, but I wish they pushed the basket further back. It's practically an ace run hole, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Hole 16 is an awesome tunnel shot with double mandos and a low ceiling nearly the whole way. Hole 17 is a true bomber a good 400' out from the tee, mostly wide open. 18 closes the course nicely with a scenic tee between trees and basket nestled off the left.

The teepads are top notch; however there are no benches and the signage hasn't been installed yet. The people were all very friendly, giving the area a nice comfortable vibe. Overall I was greatly impressed! The addition of this course is really raising the bar for the disc golf scene from Ventura to San Luis Obispo.
