The Amenities Are Great At The Lake! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 22, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Cachuma Lake now has two 18-hole courses both with the same great amenities. Everything that was done here was done right. There is a $10 charge to get into the park but gives you unlimited access to two courses. There is a nice big course sign complete with map. The tee pads are nice large trapezoid shaped pads. There is a practice basket. The baskets are pretty, orange DGA models with the hard to read red numbers. The signs are absolutely divine. They are a pretty green color with kinda of a different shape with a large easily read number, map and 3-5 basket positions. Each sign has a sponsor's information on it. There is always a bolt next to the current position. No guessing the distances here. There are large logs cut in half and laminated for the benches. There are brooms at many of the tees.

The course starts across the street from the park's little store. Being this is a state park and so you are hereby dealing with a government bureaucracy, parking seems to be really big issue. There is a sign on the street directing disc golfers to the proper and authorized parking area. The other course, the Mohawk course, has the same emphasis on where we are to park.

The golf is good but lacks the wow factor for me. The park is flat, mostly open so many of the holes are the point and shoot variety. The distances are also fairly consistent, no really long holes but no little short Ace runs either. I believe the last two holes were the only ones over 400' and they weren't too stimulating.

I did like # 11 in the A position and # 16, both which features double Mandos.

Cons:

I didn't find the on-line map to be particularly easy to decipher.

Navigation, in general, was a little sketchy. I never found the # 8 tee. A couple of times I walked around trying to find my way. The 10th tee is tricky to locate. It's behind the grocery store. I was looking beside the store.

After playing # 12, you have to backtrack most of the way to get to the # 13 pad.

And after playing 13 you have a really long walkout to # 14. Granted it's a lovely nature walk but I was here to throw discs not hike the Pacific Crest Trail. I hadn't brought my Bibler I-tent. The ranger who showed me where # 10 was told me about this long walkout and said all you have to do is follow the trail. Well, he forgot to say anything about the point where the trails forks and there is no sign to help us golfers. Note; At the fork, don't go up, keep going straight and you might eventually find # 14. I went up the trail which brought me to # 16.

Other Thoughts:

This course has a nice design which seems to stay out the camp sites and other areas where we might be in competition with the camping crowds. $10 is not too painful for 36 holes of golf. I enjoyed this course more than the Mohawk course although the Mohawk course has the two holes which I liked best out of the 36.
