Pros:
Caesar Ford Park , set in Xenia Ohio is a nice in-between to Greenview High and Xenia Rotary . I am always FOR adding new courses to promote disc golf , but this new 9 holer fell a little flat . When you pull in to the parking area to your right , just park in the first row . It doesn't matter where , since you will finish your round near the front of the row , and start near the back . Historical Note : This park used to hold a live outdoor theater production of Blue Jacket for 25 years or so until it had financial problems in 2007 and had to close . There is no kiosk that I saw while here , but there were what looked like bathrooms near hole #1 , which sits on a hill a little to the left and back of the row where you parked . This is really a 9 hole course with a long and short tee disguised as an 18 hole course . The tees are natural . Tee signs are set almost at ground level and just give you the hole number . Be careful . The numbers are not always pointed at the corresponding basket . The baskets are the white rimmed new Dynamic Veterans and easy to spot .The course looks like it has been taken care of well , with all fairways mowed . On the top of what looks to be a man made hill , for #1 , You throw down about 250' to a rounded green where the basket sits . There is thick rough surrounding the green . I thought it needed to be trimmed down , since it is sitting over 3' high . The course goes kind of clockwise around the park . If you take the dirt road and turn right after completing hole #1 , you will come up on Hole #2 ( #11 is just a bit farther down the road ) , which is a straight shot open hole 309 , that just moves slightly uphill on your initial drive . #3/12 is is another wide open 321' to a basket that sits on a small hill , flanked by a small bit of foliage to the immediate right . #4/13 is a 258' down hill throw #4 is off a small hill ) into a single row of trees . #5 is a slight downhill drive with foliage to your left that gets closer to the basket as you get further down the hill . The basket is guarded by a small clump of trees . #6 is an open uphill toss that levels out after about 200' . The accompanying #15 is a small path past #6's tee and backwards about 50' creating more of a tunnel shot . #7 is up on the hill that you threw down to #4 ( 381' ) , but throwing the opposite way , slightly downhill to level ground , then up a small embankment to the basket . Popping out the back from the #7 basket is a path , then to the right is the #8 tee . The basket is tucked about 6' in the treeline 396' away ( the left side of the fairway is wide open ) , elevated and attached to a stump . Cool basket setting . #9 is a straight shot 219' along the driveway to the basket that is set front ways in the same treeline that the #8 basket was set in . The back end of the basket is a short walk back to the lot . Holes 11-18 are basically the same as #s 1-9 , just a little longer . Except for #10 . #10's tee sets behind the little hill for a blind shot throw to the basket. Even though it is only 324' , you either need a spotter , or you must waste a throw by tossing your putter over the hill . Anything else and you might spend all day looking for your disc in that high rough .Overall , not a bad little course . No elevation to speak of except maybe teeing off from a couple of the man made hills . so it is easy on the legs . It is a quick play once you get used to the course flow . Good short course for casuals and newbies , and maybe families . My signature hole I guess would be #17 , 474' to the elevated basket on the stump tucked into the treeline .
Cons:
#1. No kiosk , no map . When you pull into the park from the short driveway you can see as many as 4 or 5 of the 9 baskets , leaving you to wander around a bit to get your bearings . The mowing helps , but it would still help to put out an online map of the course if not one on the park premises . #2 the course designer took what he had to work with and actually did a respectable job , but the course is pretty bland , no elevation , no water , no woods , no tight shots . #3 tee pads . They are nonexistent if not a little dangerous . you could easily slip off of one of these mounds . Putting some carpet down or some gravel would go a long way plus , it could eliminate the guesswork on where you throw to . #4. Signage . I know that the course is new , but the small numbers representing the tees always look to be pointed anywhere else but the basket they correspond to . #5 The foliage at #1. This is the worst place as far as growth to lose a disc . I would hate to see a newbie quit the game because he lost his only driver in there . Other thoughts : No amenities . If you want to call this an 18 hole course , it would help to have a bench or 2 or trash cans , or even water if the bathrooms are locked . Certainly not a necessity , since there will never be long waits at the holes and it plays fast . Wind will come and go here since it is so wide open . Not really a con , though .
Other Thoughts:
I dislike reviewing a course in its infancy ( 2018 ) , but I also want to make the public and especially the out of towners aware of what they can expect . I am not sure if you can do much besides trimming down some rough and putting in some legit tee pads . If the general idea was to make a good starter course and introduce disc golf to the Xenia area while giving local casuals an option , then mission accomplished . Learn on this course , then graduate to Xenia Rotary down the road . This could also serve as approach and putting practice for the better players , and good driving practice for us older players since we can empty out our bags on a hole like #7 . My recommendation : unless in the area to bag an easy course , or using this to introduce a local to the game , or practice some approaches or drives/putts , it might be easier to leave this one alone . i made a promise to return in a year or 2 after the course is broken in to update my review .
