Kids Club Gets A New Definition 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 29, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Chester City Park is a very small park just off of RT 30 on the West Virginia-Ohio border . A small amount of parking is available , and I saw no bathrooms here . It's a 9 hole course .
The Equipment - The tees are natural and the ground is worn enough so you know where to tee off from . The signs old school , Whitewashed plastic on a metal pole with basic information . The baskets are Mach 5 ( looked like old Chainstars ) according to the park .
The Landscape - The course was mowed and the park was clean when I was here . The course is flat . There are a couple of slight grades , and you tee off on a short plateau on hole 5 .
Disc Risk - About zero . Unless the kid that you hit runs off with one , your discs will come home with you .
No highlights here . The course is a fast play , maybe 20 minutes and is easy on the legs .This is the type of course that a family with 1 disc apiece can come here and enjoy a round after dinner . The course is a birdie fest even for the newest of the newbies , and an ace fest on most of the holes .

Cons:

#1 Kids Club - If the park has anyone in it besides you playing the course , they are a target . The park is way too small to support even a 3 hole course . Let's see : there's a shelter you can throw in to , a playground makes an excellent target , the parking lot . Kids Club Highlight - They fenced in the old basketball courts ,took them down and created a skate park . Hole #5 is an elevated tee that makes you throw over that skate park to the basket on the other side . Imagine knocking little Johnny off his skateboard while he was attempting a double reverse .
#2 Navigation - no map - no flow . The course starts on the corner where you pull in , almost hidden by a giant bush , and thrown towards the shelter . throw one more the same direction , then you turn left . Real odd . After finishing #4 , you have to turn right and follow the skate park fence line . The tee signs won't help you , as many are pointed in the wrong direction .
#3 Challenge - Only 2 challenges here . One is trying to clear the 10' high fence in the skate park , the other is trying to finish a 20 minute course without being named in a lawsuit
#4 Skipping - I don't know if the park has peak times or not , , but I think you may have to take a pass on a few of the holes if a bunch of families come here to picnic . It is just too tight and easily congested .
#5 - #5 . Whose brainchild was it to throw over 2 10' high fences , trapping your drive in between , especially on a windy day , and risking hitting skatepark kids ? A redesign of the hole would make sense .

Other Thoughts:

I encourage and applaud cities and townships installing disc golf courses . It's an ever-growing game , and it can draw out of towners to spend money and check out your area . Chester City Park might not be a fit for this . The overwhelming majority of people playing disc golf here are going to be kids and newer players . The Risk/Reward is going to be avoiding hitting anyone in the park .
My Recommendation - Chester City park is too small to support a disc golf course at this point .
Still - it might be okay to introduce the curious to the game . Newbies and families will enjoy it when someone gets their first ace . Putting practice and padding ace counts for others . Not worth a stop for travelers and Course Collectors can grab this one quick and head to Thompson or Tomlinson right after . . PASS ON THIS ONE !

Very, Very Quick Round 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 30, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Park seems to be groomed well and is a good park to bring your family along with you - everything is in a small area so you would be able to keep an eye on your kids at all times. Park has Porta-Johns, a small skateboard park, basketball court, and a big pavillion. There is a decent amount of parking considering how small the park is
-Chainstar baskets are nice and steady, although the chains have rusted a tiny bit
-The course is so short that you can easily play 2 rounds in under 30 min, which would be a good warm-up for other nearby courses. Thompson Park and Tomlinson Run State Park are both located within 10 minutes from here, so while it is not worth stopping for on its own, you can hit it up and make a full day of playing these 3 conveniently located courses
-Very easy to get to from highway - once you're in Chester, look signs for the city park, which is close to the McDonald's
-Tee signs with pars, distances, and mando's, which up the level of difficulty a little bit
-Exciting if you're looking for aces because 6 or 7 of them I would consider 'ace runs'. I hit the chains or basket on multiple holes and I am a low-intermediate level player

Cons:

-Only need a mid and a putter, except on 5 and maybe 4
-The two par 4's (4 and 5) are one par too high
-Since there are no tees and the pins are located so close, it can sometimes be confusing as to which direction you are shooting during the first go-around. The tees aren't set up in any specific pattern or facing any general direction in respect to the pin, just kind of randomly placed. However, the course is so small and simple that it won't be confusing after the first round.
-There was no one at the park on the Friday morning I played, but if anyone would be at the park it would create problems. All of the holes play near everything else, 5 even goes through a basketball court

Other Thoughts:

As I previously stated, this park is good if you want to bring a child or beginner too, or if you want to get a bunch of birdies and possible aces. There is not much challenge to this course, except a few trees that may interefere with your shots. This truly is a pitch-and-putt course, with 2 holes (4 and 5) that may require a driver. It is nice enough with signs and baskets that are in pretty good shape, and it is conveniently located between 2 other courses. I recommend stopping here to get a quick round in before or in between Thompson and Tomlinson.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 27, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is very small, you could play it in less than half an hour. It's close to Mountaineer Casino and Thompson Run Park, so if you're already at either of those places you could easily play this course. Short holes make for birdie and ace chances galore.

Cons:

It's almost not worth the time it takes to play it. There are only two unique holes and one is unique because you have to throw across a basketball court. If there are other people utilizing the park, you won't be able to play a few of the holes. If the pavilion was being used I would have potentially hit someone on two straight throws, and I had to wait for the basketball players to be out of the way to make my throw on hole 5. The basket for hole 6 is half way torn out of the ground and leaning at a 45 degree angle.

Other Thoughts:

It's only worth playing if you're already there or close by.
