Fun course, way better than expected

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 4, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Equipment - Baskets are new and installed very well in concrete. All were perfectly level. Signs for distance and par on each hole. No maps, but course is short enough to not require maps. Tee pads are turf but in good condition. One "pad" was the asphalt parking lot.
- Length: As it is a church course, the holes are mostly on the shorter side. There is one wide open par 4 and a couple holes over 325.
- Natural Beauty: The course plays around a large church building, but the course itself is fine. The grass is well taken care of, and some large trees come into play occasionally.
- Bystander Safety: Despite playing around a church, the designer did a good job keeping the course away from the playground and pavilion that are on site. A couple holes come near the parking lot, but that isn't too big of a deal.
- Variety: There was enough variety that I was able to use different shots and discs on most holes. More variety than most 9-hole courses I have played. The elevation changes on the site are slight, but the designer did try to incorporate them as best as possible. Hole 3 has a tricky basket on the side of a hill and hole 2 is a short downhill shot.

Cons:

- Navigation: From the tee of 5, two baskets are visible and look like they could be the correct basket. Without UDisc, I may have played the wrong backet.
- Player Safety: I don't think this course will ever be busy enough for this to be a big issue, but a hyzer drive on hole 6 plays directly over hole 7's basket and a misthrow could definitely be hazardous for someone playing hole 7.
- Strange Mando: On hole 4, there is a double mando between two trees. The issue is that the mando is 300 feet from the tee, about 20 feet from the basket. My drive landed about 30 feet right and short of the mando, and instead of a C2 bid for birdie, I had to try to play between these two trees at nearly a right angle from my lie. I have never seen a mando within C1, and I hope to never see one again.
- Amenities: A course map would be nice at hole 1, would help with the confusion I mentioned above. A trashcan somewhere would also be good, but my assumption is that most players will be members of the church and will have access to the amenities inside (bathrooms, trashcans)
- OB: OB is never specified, but I think common sense OB rules apply. Parking lots and roads are OB as well as the roped off property line with a 'No Trespassing" sign. It would be nice if this was explicit, however.

Other Thoughts:

I was pleasantly surprised by this little course. I was able to use a variety of discs off the tees. The well installed and new baskets are really what impressed me the most. If I lived close, I wouldn't hesitate to come down and play this course regularly.
