Long and Hilly 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 6, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice, clean, multi-use park that tries to segregate the DG from most other activities.

• Variety: Decent - Very nice range of distances with four holes clocking in over 500', three more at 400+ ft, and yet another three at 350+. A few ace runs and birdie opportunities for noodle arms are sprinkled in.
The course plays a bit on the longish side, but it's mostly open with a few trees to avoid, so if you like to bomb, you'll enjoy playing here. The sparsely treed landscape does what it can, but most holes allow a variety of routes. This means not much is required in terms of shot shaping (which is what keeps me from marking it higher in terms of variety). Might get better as trees grow in on the front 9, but without a crystal ball, I can only rate what I played.

• Elevation: Very good - by far my favorite feature of this course is the rolling terrain. Elevation changes from mild to very significant on at least half the holes. Don't expect massive elevation changes, but IMHO, this course would be fairly boring if it were flat.

• Challenge: Decent - Mostly in terms of distance and dealing with wind if it's blowing. If you can throw 350 or better without working hard, and can place upshots in the circle, you'll eat this course up. If you can only manage 300 off the tee, strokes will start to add up.

• Equipment: Decent - Concrete tees are adequate, and the Mach VII baskets are fine. Tee posts are pretty easy to spot from a distance, and provide the basics.

• Aesthetics: Good - Rolling terrain and open landscape make for some nice sightlines. Expect a pleasant, peaceful stroll, up and down grassy hill sides.

• Fun-Factor: Decent - Guess it depends what you prefer. This course will appeal to players who like to air it out and/or enjoy elevation changes. If line shaping is your thing, you may not have as much fun. Reasonably good for beginners if they don't mind piling up strokes on long holes. This course won't beat them down, and there's not a lot of opportunity for lost discs. Plus it's the kind of course that will encourage beginners to improve technique to gain distance.

• Routing/Nav: Decent - Nothing struck me as out of the ordinary here.

• Responsibly designed. Does a decent job of keeping discs away from the walking path.

Cons:

Nothing glaringly wrong, but...

• Without any holes that say, "Hit this line," the course started to feel repetitive halfway through. That feeling never left me

• #15 teased me by letting me think, "Finally, a couple of woods holes!" ...but no.

Other Thoughts:

Park style disc golf that leans heavily on rolling terrain and distance as the primary features.

Came across couple of groups that had no clue they were walking up a fairway, but it wasn't a prevalent issue.

The only real potential issue I foresee is on a couple of the uphill holes, where the hill limits your line of sight and it's possible to throw farther than you can see.

Keep in mind that only disc golfers see "fairways." Other people just see trees and grass. As far as they know, they're literally just going for a walk in the park. Disc golfers have to assume people walking 200+ ft away have absolutely no idea what we're doing, or where we're throwing, or the potential of being hit.

Good course that could have earned a higher rating if it had a few fairways that really require hitting a line. Look at the course pix - they're not misleading.

Uncommonsly Good For Links Style Discin' 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 22, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Rolling, moderate elevation through a grassy, mostly open, links-style course. Scattered mature trees on the front nine increase in frequency on the back nine. A lot of saplings and young trees have been planted throughout the course but especially on the front nine. So while this course is mostly open at the moment, in a few years time the trees will become a key factor. Essentially, this course will only get better over time because of this. After hole #13, the course transitions over a causeway between two marshy areas. After hole #16, the flow crosses back over the same causeway, potentially causing minor conflict with hole #13. This was the most awkward spot, but the routing to the back part of the park allows for hole #'s 14-16 to play along the edge of actual woodland, adding even more diversity. Hole #15's tee has trees close off the front right side, the only tee shot on the course where you're dodging something immediately off the tee.
- Great design centered around getting the most out of the moderate elevation changes. A good variety of downhill, uphill, up-and-over, etc.
- Good use of water hazards to keep players honest on the downhill touch shot on hole #3, and guarding the green on the right side on hole #14. Water could potentially come into play on hole #'s 13 and 16 but would require some doing.
- Great mix of distances: three holes under 250', seven in the 300-399' range, three in the 400-499' range, and four over 500'. Nothing exceptionally long, in that no hole exceeds 600'. The mix of distances really help keep the round fresh and exciting, and adds greatly to the good "links" vibe. Scoring well here is predicated first on distance, then on managing the elevation, wind, water, and lastly, the scattered trees. Some courses that use distance for scoring separation seem bland to me, but I felt this design mixes everything up really solidly; designers seem to have a good eye and feel for teasing out the most fun from the land available.
- Solid amenities. Good baskets, concrete tees, sufficient tee signage, great "next tee" signage (an arrow on every basket), bathrooms, scorecard with map, etc.

Cons:

- Walkers on the paths and the pavilion by hole #1, if in use, could impact play, but for the most part this course enjoys a golf-centric section of the park.
- The conflict on hole #13 as you walk from #16 to #17 is the one place where the design doesn't knock it out of the park; however, adding the holes in the back adds significantly to the course and I can understand the choice to do so.
- No prairie style grasses except in the marshy areas, which are, for the most part, really easily avoidable. However, it appears as though only the "fairways" and "greens" are mowed lower or more regularly...the "rough" areas aren't super long grass, but rougher and taller. Maybe ankle height. Mostly just a pain to walk through, and I could see this slowing down carts, especially in conjunction with the rolling elevation changes. Once or twice, the grass length transformed tracking down a disc into a 3-minute affair instead of an immediate "there it is."
- Hole #9's basket isn't immediately obvious, and another basket behind it looks to be your target from the tee. This is the only spot where the tee sign's lack of detail affected my round.
- First section of the park (hole #'s 1-5) are a bit cramped, and in a few other places throughout, but nothing unmanageable.
- Water hazards are hazardous. Not sure if most people will be able to retrieve discs from the water-filled, steep ditches on hole #'s 3 and 14.

Other Thoughts:

- For a single tee/single pin, mostly open, grassy park styley course, Commons Park is Uncommonsly Good. Enjoyed my round immensely here, despite going in not expecting much.
- Great course for getting up on your good foot and practicing drives and managing elevation.
- Forget about Trine just down the road. Come here and enjoy this course twice instead!

Nice course, but... 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 28, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

The park is amenities rich. Bathrooms, cart friendly, decent parking and, while there are walking paths throughout the area, I did not have any problems with other-use patrons. Pars are very generous (and I don't have a big arm), the Mach VIIs are great, and the next tee arrows on the baskets and mown paths, fairways and greens make navigation a snap. Great use of elevation changes in a fairly flat part of the country.

Cons:

It will need tee pads, and several years for the trees planted in the first third of the course to grow. Variety between holes is mostlyaccomplished with elevation and distance changes. I didn't see a tee pad sign with anything but a straight line on it for most of the course. Even where trees are planted, I'm not sure they will add to the challenge. (on hole one, they make a nice neat box around an open shot up the middle.)

Other Thoughts:

There were some opportunities that got overlooked in setting this one up. For example, fifteen finishes into the woods. You see a path ahead and think, "Great! A wooded hole or two." Wrong. You walk through the woods to the next open tee. On the other hand, thirteen made me choose between a RHFH drive or pick a gap in the trees for a backhand. And I loved hole three, which has a high tee you would think would be for a long bomber-nope, putter shot to a basket tucked up by a ditch and the road. Admittedly, the morning I was there had no appreciable wind, so I may well have been missing a normal difficulty factor, but more might be done with OBS and/or mandatories to up the challenge on a fairly open course.

first impressions 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 27, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course had a lot of elevation changes with a mix of long and short shots! The grass pads were a new treat (I\'m used to concrete) would play again under the right weather conditions!

Cons:

Went and played a day after it had rained causing it to be muddy and slick on the grass pads! Besides a few holes (2,10,11,12,18) most pads were useable!

Other Thoughts:

Would recommend not going when the wind is above 5-10mph due the the course having zero tree cover to slow the wind gust down

Pros:

-Well designed layout.
-Great baskets.
-Most amenities are present.
-A few holes can be aced by average players.
-Neatly kept park and facilities.

Cons:

-Some holes have a high disc risk. Forward spotters can be
helpful.
-As the grass tees wear out, concrete tees will be needed.

Other Thoughts:

This is a fun and challenging course that all players can enjoy. Highly recommended to satisfy that disc golf itch.

Pros:

for me this course is beyond outstanding. it is basically 1 mile from my home. there are 4 easy/short holes where a birdie is likely. there are some longer holes that cannot be reached in 1 throw. the wind can blow thru this park and make even the short holes more challenging. the location is close to town and local schools. the baskets are top notch. I was an instant fan when the course was installed july 2019.

Cons:

lots of ground hogs and holes. there are not tee pads yet but I know there will be within a year. during heavy rain, water is a big problem. several areas are prone for standing water.

The elevation and distances for each hole made it enjoyably challenging.

Could really use some tee pads. standard & pro.

Other Thoughts:

Before reading any of the other reviews I was expecting a basic course. Nothing too extravagant.

commons park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 13, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

great elevation throughout the course

mowed fairways make navigation very easy

long challenging holes (maybe a con for others)
nice quite secluded nature area with very little other then disc golf on back half of the course .

benches to rest at on #9 and # 12 has a pavilion and picnic table you can use and you can also stop there before #17 so plenty of places to rest at.

Cons:

the course is fragmented in places 13 to 14 and 16-17 not a long walk just disrupts the flow a little .
the course is very long (this maybe a pro for some )
grass tee pads for now plans to add cement is planned for later .
the course ends a little bit away for #1 tee

Other Thoughts:

tips
For families or anyone who doesn't want to do the full course after #9 take the mowed path up going towards #6 basket it leads right back to #1 and allows you to avoid the longer more secluded parts of the course.

After 13 tee the path directly behind the basket and 14 will be on the right
# 14 has water on the right side of the hole but is hidden behind the rough you do not want to go in there.

Bring lots of water and sunscreen during the summer the course is mostly open with little shade .
bug spray in summer the course goes though wetland areas so it can be buggy .

O.B
#3 in the water are over the ditch.
#5,#6 and #7 on are over the walking path.
#8 over the fence
#13 over fence (not sure if this is possible but maybe )
#14 in or over small creek.

restrooms by the path heading towards #1

when entering the park follow the signs for Selman Pavilion the first hole is located on the far end of the lot by the restrooms follow the paved path and the first hole has a mailbox on top .

Shape Up Stueben raised the money for the course so a big thank you to them

I will play it again 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 27, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

right out front, the tee signs are nice.
> being new, the grass tees, are in good condition. they have two flat stones to tee off from between.
> the grass was cut, so there was not much as in a hazard
> if you are newer to the sport, it is not too difficult to make you overly frustrated.
> the baskets are in good condition
> good elevation changes
> # 14 ,15, 16 are like in a secluded area, that when I was back there , there was a couple deer watching, and grazing.
> A tunnel shot does not stand out in my mind at all.
> I met only two other people playing while I was there, and they were very friendly... to me, that is where it all starts.. how upfront and helpful of the people who on the course regularly.
<> the course is new, and honestly I really enjoyed it.
NO POISON IVY that I seen. again well cut grass.

Cons:

> the fairways and the roughs, basically the same.. if you were looking for tree, this is not the place. while there are some, on maybe the middle third of the course, most generally trees do not come into play ( this is not necessarily a con).
> Parking, well my guess , it was a 300 yards walk to the first tee, and finish of #18 is a little bit further than that back to the parking lot I WAS IN
but no sign saying I was heading the right way is what was the main flaw.
> no benches, no trash cans... I am in my late 50's, and like a spot to set the bag down, I am not in a hurry.
> if there are restrooms, they are a bit of a way away.. it say there is, but not by the disc area.
> walking paths may bother some.. but really, I did not see a problem.

Other Thoughts:

ONCE you find hole #1 tee, you play north and slightly west. By the time you tee off on number three you are throwing east down hill at a basket , guessing 250 ft. then from #4 you begin to work back southwest towards #1, How ever at this point you keep working south zigzagging back and forth till hole #13 which is a short ace / birdie drop hole almost due east.. from there 14 goes south #15 NE, and here where the biggest hiccups in the layouts start., #16 is a bit of a travel to tee, down around the edge of the trees, and east, to tee out west..yes back where someone from 15 would be entering, then again the only way to #17 tee shot, is past #14 , and right up the center of #13 fairway.. where,#17 is basically right by 13 going back north, #18 tees going NW.
you never really loop back, AND, if I recall correctly number 9 is not near the start either.
not sure if there is a Course design sign somewhere, IF there is , I never seen it. but the dog run fence area, is west and on the south side the walking path from Tee #1.

Great new course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 24, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

1. The first 12 holes play on the open and slightly wooded hills of Common Park. The final 6 holes play through and along the wetland area of the park. This creates a favorable combination of holes with a variety of elevation changes and disc golf challenges for all player levels.
2. Brand new DGA Mach VII baskets.
3. Good signage.
4. Bathrooms and water are available at the Selman Timber Frame Pavilion at the start of the course.

Cons:

1. The ditch behind hole 3 and along the right side of the fairway of hole 14 can swallow your disc if thrown errantly.
2. The tall wetland grass beside some fairways can also hide discs not thrown in the fairway. Keep an eye on your disc.

Other Thoughts:

Commons Park Disc Golf Course is a great addition to disc golf in general. To have an 18 hole course in Angola, Indiana fills a course void in this area of the country and will provide enjoyment for many park users for years to come.
