What Does Keyshawn Say?

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 26, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

-I liked the last hole. It's an uphill 350' open shot near a big tree. The second hole is an okay sidearm/backhand anhyzer. Plays close to the ballfield and the road is nearby but not as much of a hindrance as it could be. Underneath the mess in the woods, #5 is a good hole too.

-Still has visible tee signs. Most of them were in place (see cons below). I liked the drawn out diagrams too.

Cons:

-The overgrowth in the woods from holes #5 to #7 is so incredibly bad to the point where there is probably nothing that can be done to fix the issue now. There is a dead fallen tree that is standing backwards right in front of #6's basket. For a moment I honestly thought that was a teepee that maybe a homeless person in Shelby might have made. The vegetation on #5's green is so bad that it could possibly be infested with snakes. It's such a mess to where I don't think it could be cleared up in the wintertime. For two reasons. This is a boring nine hole course. And second, it would take a whole lot of work to fix up the mess and I don't think anyone would be interested to fix it up because hey, this is a boring nine hole course.

-#6's tee sign for reason ended up in #5's basket. #4's tee sign I never found but from what I saw on the media, it's a 300+ par three that plays too close to #3's green.

What did Keyshawn Johnson say in that 1999 interview after a loss? "What can you do? I mean there's nothing you can do. You can't do anything. Just nothing. We can't do shit."

-The open holes either play too close to fields (#1-3), or simply too close to each other (#3-4).

Other Thoughts:

-The disc golf course at Crest High School is dead. It's nothing but a ghost. The course is visible but hasn't been removed. It's like a rotting carcus in an open field that doesn't need to be seen.

-I realize that at a point in time that this was an okay nine hole course. Dale Sollars designed it along with South Mountain (which is still one of my favorite courses in 2022). Dale is the reason why local pro AJ Carey got so into disc golf. Now he's on the pro tour. I'm sure Dale did the best that he was given with and I would've rated it higher if the wooded holes hadn't become such a jungle. I wish I played it years ago because it was probably better back then. When I was in the ninth grade, my English teacher (who had previously taught at Crest) told me about the course at Crest and said that was a pretty good course. She had plenty of positive things to say about the course at Gardner Webb as well. I wish that Crest High School's course lived up to its potential.

Crest High School 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 5, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Crest High School features 9 holes that have DISCatcher baskets & natural tees. The course features a mixture of wooded and open holes and features a wide range of hole length, with the shortest being 124' and the longest being 450'. There were benches at many of the tees. I at least saw one at Holes 1, 2, & 9.

The course seems like it was originally designed to be a good course for Rec/Intermediate level players. None of the holes are too long where they aren't birdie-able, but some are a bit longer than a beginner would be comfortable throwing on.

Cons:

Outside of the typical cons seen at school courses: limited hours, no restrooms, etc. - the course has much more to worry about. The course seems to have been primarily forgotten/disregarded by the school. Most of the holes on this course are flat and open shots to the basket, but three holes are played in the woods on the edge of campus. Hole 5 enters the woods to reach the putting green, but it is an overgrown mess with fallen trees everywhere. Hole 6 is almost unplayable, as you are throwing over & through fallen trees, and overgrown mess. Hole 7 was still playable, but hard to reach the tee without walking down the fairway. Again you are throwing a tight gap because of how overgrown it is.

Hole 8 would have been one of my favorite holes on the course, as it is the one of the only ones with noticeable elevation, but there is a trailer parked right in the middle of the fairway, blocking a significant portion of the gap. Hole 9 plays very close to the wrestling building, but I didn't notice many windows that could be broken with an errant shot. Hole 2 plays very close to Old Boiling Springs Rd. An errant shot could end up in/over the road.

Many of the holes, most notably hole 1, play very close to the football field or other sports complexes. The football field in particular would be upsetting to have an errant drive enter, because of the barbed-wire fence preventing any chance of recovering your disc. The tennis courts and baseball field could probably be entered to get one back, but I mainly threw "loaner" discs just in case.

When I played Hole 3 had clearly been hit by a mower, truck, etc. It was leaning at an almost 60 degree angle.

Other Thoughts:

When playing Crest High School, it is clear that the design of the course was fairly well thought out. The close proximity to other aspects of the sports complex would necessitate a need to be very careful with which shots are thrown. However, with the current state of Holes 5, 6, 7, & 8 - I would be hard pressed to believe anyone at the school has any real interest in the course or the sport even.

For now I am going to give the course a 0.5 - mostly because of the design of the course. I was definitely not a huge fan of the barbed-wire fence so close to a couple of the holes, notably Holes 1 & 5, but that is something I could understand. Unfortunately the wooded holes made the course just simply not fun! Hole 5, which would be the signature hole if it were maintained, is in such disrepair it wasn't fun to play. Hole 6 took me longer to find than the rest of the course took me to play. Hopefully someone takes a liking to the course and fixes it up before the school just decides to pull the baskets.

Favorite Hole: 5*

* If the course was maintained.
