Wild Ending Using An Already Played Card 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 21, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

(1.885 Rating) A quirky open niner with one fantastic tunnel shot.
- REC FRIENDLY - A nice generally unassuming layout that will work for Beginners through Recreational players. Very little thick overgrowth, even in the woods. The odds of losing a disc is near impossible, except if one is thrown up high in a tree or if it has been forgotten.
- TEES, SIGNAGE AND BASKETS - Always a nice start for a course when the basics are done well. The tees are concrete and measure 5 feet by 8 feet while the baskets are MachXs. The signage was minimalistic, but I think it may have been in the process of being updated. The tee markers were numbered posts, but with a blank wood sign mounted to the post.
- NAVIGATION - Ok I suppose. There's a course map by tee (1). So as long as a player snaps a photo, they will have a reference to check if they question their next move. A photo of the map also gives players the distances for each hole.
- QUICK PLAY - A single should be able to complete a full 9 in about 30 minutes. Groups of 4 should probably finish in under an hour.

Cons:

A strange layout that provides only the basics.
- DOUBLE BASKET USAGE - The reuse of basket (3) on hole (9) makes no sense unless they lost a basket on the course before making the signage. When I got to (3), I was personally confused and accidently played to basket (8) as it looked more attenable. I didn't realize my mistake till (8). This layout oddity is going to become an issue when several groups are on the course.
- MULTI-USE HAZARDS - Holes (1) and (2) will not be available if a baseball game is going on. By judging the baseball diamond field's condition, it's likely rarely used and is probably abandoned. A walking path is in play on 8 of the 9 holes, but it will be easy to see path users due to the openness. Hole (1) has a business property fence along the right side basically the whole way. I could see other reviewers taking off substantially more rating score for just this aspect.
- HOLE VARIETY- Below average in general, but for niner, probably above average. Mostly an open layout but with one long tunnel shot and some pockets in the woods. The holes have a decent mix of distances for an all par 3 (low 200s to low 400s). Also, there's a mix of skill difficulty. For example, holes like (4) and (8) fell like novice level shots, while holes such as (1, 2, 3 and 7) are at least Intermediate level. Elevation is mild with a few shots around the 10-foot grade change range.
- AMENITIES - 8 baskets on a 9-hole course with a practice basket makes no sense. As noted in the pros, the tees and baskets are adequate. I liked the chill area at tee (5) as well. That's pretty much it for course amenities. Restrooms, playgrounds and shelters are in the park too.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - If grading on a curve, I give hole (7) a B+. It's a really nice looking fully wooded tunnel shot requiring subtle line movement. The rest of the course? Perhaps a C- grade at best. Way too open for my tastes. Man made structures can be seen basically the whole time except on (7). Note, I don't recall a fence on (7) as noted in the prior reviews. It could be there, but I had such a fantastic throw that I may have gotten tunnel vision walking up fairway. Hole (7) was the sole reason why this course came in at a low 2.0 rating instead of a 1.5 in my books.

Other Thoughts:

In the words of the Gambler, "Know when to fold them." Deuces Wild is an odd little course that will honestly only work for those on the south end of town. I liked holes (4-7), but if the rest were to be deleted from my memory, I wouldn't care. Don't come to this course expecting some disc golf epiphany. There are some fun shots here for sure, but all average courses can say that. This is a utility course that will provide a service to the locals but that's about it. Players outside the area should only consider this course if they are looking for a laid-back round and are in the neighborhood. I would recommend checking out Hickory Hills to out of towners first, followed by The Backyard.

I'm not sure where the name comes from... 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 9, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Deuces Wild DGC is a fun little 9-holer near Grawn, MI (about 15 minutes southwest of Traverse City). There is a course kiosk at the first tee which proclaims the full name of the course: "Blair Township Deuces Wild Community Park Disc Golf Course". A two of spades is shown on each side of the name for good measure. How do they come up with these names?? Regardless, the name of this course may be the most memorable thing about it.

The other side of the kiosk has an accurate course map. Take a picture of the map or download it from here if you don't want to wander around looking for a couple of the tee pads during your round.

The nine tee pads are cement and in good condition. The nine Mach X baskets are also in good condition. Holes #3 and #9 share a basket, but there is also a practice basket near the kiosk so still nine baskets in total.

There are a couple of decent holes here. #4 and #6 each start in the open and play around a couple of obstacles, to baskets tucked into a wooded area in the back of the park. #7 plays entirely through the wooded area. Some of the remaining holes have a few trees to work around. The length here is above average too for this type of course - all holes are >200' and three are >350', with the longest at 420'. Overall the course is a decent challenge for recreational level players.

Cons:

Several holes play across or along a multi-use path. On the Sunday afternoon that I played, this path was very busy with people jogging and roller blading. This path is an inconvenience for disc golfers at best, and a safety hazard at worst.

Several holes play near a chain link fence at the back of the park. To make matters worse, the fence is close by on your left for holes #7 and 8 so recreational players trying to throw RHBH may easily throw discs over the fence into private property.

Holes #1 and 2 play across baseball fields, and have no obstacles between the tee and basket.

No other challenges like water or significant elevation on any of the holes.

The tee signs are mostly in disrepair. The ones that are still all there have a photograph of the hole taken from the tee, with the basket pointed out by a large clipart arrow. Better than nothing I guess, but I would prefer to see a hole number/distance/par. Fortunately, someone else thought the same thing and carved/painted hole numbers and distances on most (possibly all) of the tee sign posts. You could probably assume all of the holes are par 3, though recreational players would struggle to reach 420'.

Long walks between some holes, and a longer walk back to your car after #9. #1 and #2 play across the baseball diamond anyway, so why not have #9 play back across it toward #1 instead of basically making it a shorter version of #3?

Other Thoughts:

The park also features a "fitness course" that shares some of the land used for the disc golf course. The idea here appears to be to jog around the park and stop at each station to perform sit-ups, knee lifts, etc. If you partake, you might be able to get a full body workout just from 9 holes of disc golf! Of course, you also might have to wait for someone to clear the exercise plank near the basket before you throw...

This is an OK place for locals to come play if they are careful. Course baggers will have seen worse. For those visiting and looking for the best courses to try out in the area, this is not one of them.

Deuces Wierd 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 2, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

- The shiny new Mach X baskets are fantastic.
- The course map at hole one is nice.
- The bench at hole one is also nice.

Cons:

Yikes...

- The tee pads while they are in fact, concrete are way way too small.
- The tee signs are rather...odd. Basically, they are full color photos of the hole from the tee pad vantage point with a giant arrow graphic pointing to the basket. This is nice and all but so is hole lengths. Honestly, I am not sure how I feel about this.
- #1 basket is in dead center field of a ball diamond.
- #2 basket is in dead center field of a second ball diamond.
- I really think it's quite cool how almost all of the holes play over a walking path.
- #3 and #9 share a basket for some odd reason. Basically, 9 is a shorter version of 3. I don't get it...'
- Navigation is an utter disaster on some of the holes. Take a photo on your smart phone of the course map or something else otherwise you're going to spend a lot of time wandering the park.
- The tee signs for 5 and 6 are gone.
- I really like how #7 is a tight wooded fairway running parallel to a 4' tall fence along the park edge. That means newb hyzers and errant throws kicking off of a tree headed to the left will almost certainly fly right over the fence.
- #8 has the same issue with the fence. Yay!
- I also enjoyed the rather absurdly long walk from #9 basket back to where I parked which was what, a good quarter mile?

Other Thoughts:

This is clearly a case of a park or township putting in a disc golf course because hey, DISC GOLF! The park is not well suited for a course - even a 9 holer. These baskets ought to be pulled and sold to someone else who can actually put them to good use. The only DG'ers you're going to see here are the occasional course bagger (such as myself) or some random hucker with nothing better to do. What you won't see are TD's running things like Ace Race's, Ice Bowls and so on. I really wish Blair Township would have put as much time, effort and money into this course as they did on their really snazzy playground in the same park.

Also, I noticed that according to the course map on hole 1 that Dueces Wild was designed by "professionals" and while I refuse to name said "professional" course designers here I encourage Blair Township to get their money back. Whatever amount they spent on this "professional" design was way way too much.

Not sure on this one 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 9, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Aesthetic-- plays across a large multi-use park. Sweet playground here for the kiddos and a splash pad. Not sure why but holes 1 and 2 play on baseball/softball fields? not sure if these are active fields but could present some serious danger. Hole 7 plays on a fitness trail.

Baskets-- Mach-X. These are so sweet. very catchy awesome baskets

Routing and nav-- not really any question here. Holes 3 and 9 share a basket and hole 8's basket is less then 100' from either tee

Teepads-- in decent shape, a little short for some of the longer drives but I'm sure you could run up from behind

Variety-- some decent variety here. From wide open field shots to tight woods to some of each on the same hole. Kept you guessing the whole round

Map and teesigns-- in great shape and very descriptive. Teesigns did NOT have distances but the map did so take a pic if you're into that sort of thing.

Cons:

Danger and proximity-- so, like I said, this course plays ON baseball/softball fields for the first couple holes. Like I said, not sure on the actual use of these diamonds but could produce some issues. Hole 1, 6, 7, 8 all play very near a fence on the left side of the fairway. take very good care of your plastic on these holes.

Other Thoughts:

Another solid effort from Todd Lewis and crew. Thanks uncle Todd!
