Pros:
1) Moderately maintained city park surrounded by sports fields with ample parking, clearly designed for beginners and novice players. Nothing aesthically pleasing unless you are lucky enough to see a train passing by as you navigate the back side of the course.
2) Very solid distances and shot shapes for beginners and recreational players. Longer distances than most 9 hole beginner centric designs which lends to allowing a player to grow their game into this course.
3) No real chance at losing a disc as there is only a very small shallow creek as far as water features, and tall grass/brush only comes into play on the extreme perimeters of the course.
4) Very open throwing lines with some but not overwhelming guardian trees. Definitely balances the feel of open field golf with some slight technicality but makes most holes forgettable and similar in everything but distance.
5) Trees and greens are undercut and lack brush and are mowed and maintained. There really isn't any place to "get yourself into trouble" with errant shots and makes scrambling really easy.
6) A surprisingly long 9 hole course, coming in over 3'200 feet. There are a couple holes pushing or exceeding the 450 foot mark while encompassing some shorter holes as well meaning players of all skill levels will utilize most of their bag. Definitely not just a putter pitch and putt course.
7) All the right equipment, large textured concrete tee pads in great shape, older but well maintained Discatcher baskets, practice basket right next to parking lot adjacent to hole #1, full color but somewhat dated holes signs and a large introductory course map/sign.
8) Course navigation is intuitive. You basically play in a large continuous circle around the sports fields in a clockwise motion. U-Disc or course map can assist but is not needed.
9) Extremely fast course to play, solo round between 30-45 minutes and a solo two loop 18 can be done in a hour to hour and a half (whether that be two loops here or combined with he other 9 hole course just down the road)
10) Didn't see any trash cans beyond hole 1 and near hole 9 basket that I can recall but the park looks well maintained and never encountered any trash or debris.
Cons:
1) Below average 9 hole course that doesn't offer much in terms of beauty, difficulty, or variety (other than distance). No signature or really memorable holes and you'll find yourself struggling to remember the hole number shortly after you play when trying to describe a hole or "remember that shot on that one hole". Very bland.
2) Lack of difficulty. This can go both ways, but the lack of demanding tunnel shots, forced shot shapes, tricky greens, and the relative flatness of the property all make this course a very easy hyzer fest for those with even moderate skill.
3) There are no benches and very little chance throughout to get out of the sun. The park ammenities exist, such as shelter houses, bathrooms, and water fountains but they are not anywhere close to the actual disc golf course or the route you take.
4) As mentioned above, no natural beauty or sights to be seen. Pretty open park with ball fields, chain link fences, and railroad tracks. The road, some houses, and several buildings are the only sights in all directions. So if the setting and the sights are part of your experience you want, this one isn't it.
5) As with a lot of HB's designs there are some lengthy walks between holes (6 basket to 7 tee pad) and #9 basket back to where you parked just to name 2. Although mostly flat, the small creek can add even more distance if you are using a cart because you will have to detour around it to find places to cross on several holes.
6) Lack of trees and open fairways present the danger of crossing into other fairways, especially from hole 3 on through hole 6. Not really a concern for more skilled players, but for the novice players this course targets, it can really become an issue if multiple people are on the course at once. There is also a walking trail that pretty much follows the perimeter of the property that coincides with most of the course. Though no one was using it at the time I was there, I could see this being a decent problem.
7) Just unimpressive and is hurt more by the fact that there aren't any really solid courses close by. Definitely not a destination course and probably a skip unless you are local course to be honest.
Other Thoughts:
Doctor's Park can be paired with Old City Park right down the road (another 9 hole course) and possibly even add HH Lovett Park (another 9 hole course in Benton not super far away) to make a 27 hole three course mini day but none of them are spectacular enough to warrant a trip for just that. Right off the instate 24 Calvert City exit, so for baggers in the Paducah area you can certainly drop in and knock these courses out before heading on to your next bigger destination.
