Absolutely fantastic experience 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 2, 2022 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-The open field holes are fun and scoreable but interesting. Decisions off the tee are presented and constitute a real birdie/bogey or safe par dilemma.
-The wooded holes on the hill are truly whack. All the fairways are fair but challenging, the real difficulty however is hitting your line AND managing the groundplay on 45 degree sidehills or inclines/declines. Rollaways are to be expected and are the most punishing aspect of this section of the course. Severe downhills also force creative lines, I saw gentle putts off the tee that glode all the way down the hill never to be seen again. Upside down throws are your friend.
-The teepad surfaces are really good, some kind of grit bound by a rubber mat. Super happy.
-The facilities there are delightful. This place absolutely is a resort with great food, great sleeping arrangements and great surroundings.
-The owners love and support disc golf. At the event I played they made sure that discs were retrieved all the way throughout the day from rough, trees and the stream flowing through the course. They also provided breakfasts every morning and put on great entertainment over the weekend. They put on a fantastic show and I'm sure they would make a great experience for casual players also.

Cons:

-This place is well expensive to buy into the full experience and it's definitely very secluded. Individual rounds themselves appear to cost £6, but a full experience with accomodation, food and travel will definitely amount to more. A package experience when they're putting on an event is highly recommended however!
-Discs will get lost. Between the hill, the rough and the water in play it will happen. They appear to be fantastic at trying to retrieve discs however. The hill is shouldn't be played alone.
-The wooded holes could be longer in places. On some of the 40-60m holes it felt like hitting first available wasn't nearly as badly punished as being just off on a putt.
-The hill is definitely a massive physical challenge and not to be underestimated. Slips, trips and falls are a real danger and even just marching around or maintaining balance is very tough on the joints.
-All the road signs in the area have firmly too many consonants.

Other Thoughts:

-The local town of Newcastle Emlyn has an indian restaurant that has cooked for the Queen. Get the spicy honey butter chicken. I can't stop thinking about it.
-I'd have loved to have more time outside of competition to play the hillside holes and find more aggressive plays, but it was definitely objective:survive because of the tournament. I'll be watching the CCDG coverage with great interest when it comes out.
-This place is just really special. So many signature holes and just one crazy experience.

Course Designer! Go here. Seriously. 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 10, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Great baskets
- Great signage
- Great layout
- Beautiful
- Picturesque
- Did I mention beautiful?
- Relaxing
- Great facilities on site
- Incredibly friendly and welcoming owners
- Pro shop on site
- Designed for Disc Golf, built for disc golf.
- 9 Hole beginner red course and a 22 hole Blue layout
- Tees have all been created with fencing and planting to make them feel secluded and sheltered. Benches are being scattered around the course.

Cons:

- If there have been heavy rains the river turns from a shallow disc retrievable crystal clear delight to a raging torrent of disc losing muddiness so just be aware on that one.
- Struggling to think of many? There is definitely one filler hole in hole 9 but I still quite enjoy it.
- Shame the long tee on 7 can't be permanent as it turns it into a true par 4 where currently it is really just a tough 3.

- Not all tees have been finished with the hardcore yet.
- Lacking a couple of longer holes?

Other Thoughts:

(2021 review EDIT at the bottom.)

So where to begin?

Probably with the rating. I feel wrong giving a 12 hole course a 4 star...

But 'm going to anyway so sue me.

Felin Geri is beautiful, I love it. I've designed a lot of courses now and this one is fighting it's way out of my sub conscience shouting that it's my favourite. Who am I to argue with that belligerent inner voice?

The shallow, fast flowing and picturesque Ceri river runs through the site and comes into play on a number of the Blue course holes which wind up and down the valley before bringing you back to the 12th hole. The hole is 95 meters slightly uphill. It crosses the Ceri at about 30 meters through a gap in the trees and then flies up a narrowing fairway bordered on one side by the ornamental ponds from Felin Geris former glory days as a visitor attraction and on the other side the old cart track. It ends up with a basket on a small mound under a weird straight limbed hanging branch. Situated in front of the old mill (millwheels and all) the gallery, seated in the bar patio area, eating their pizzas from the outdoor pizza oven just the other side of the mill stream, can view as you complete the round with a birdie tap in or the double OB 6. Whichever you get you know there is a beer and a warm welcome the other end of the bridge.

Any discs finding their way into the river should be retrievable unless there have been recent heavy rains. The river where it comes into play with the course is normally less than a foot deep and very clear.

The course has been laid out in two loops of 6 bringing you back to the clubhouse or bar to allow for refreshments or disc replacements mid round.

There are at least 4 holes out here that would be signatures on any other course, Holes 3, 6, 10 and 12. Hole 11 makes use of what was once an island in the river which has since silted up but leaves the clear definition and marshy area that has been staked OB giving the chance to play what feels like a heart shaped island hole without the risk of losing your disc.

Hole 6 still needs a larger tree down which will be out in the next year or so through erosion from the river. It;s playable as is but I will feel more comfortable with the hole once it's down opening up a larger gap to hit across the river .

Hole 10 in the spring with a carpet of snowdrops is the most beautiful hole I've ever played.

With the 6 hole extension in next year this will be straight up to 4.5 star and possibly might make my first 5 star. Maybe. we'll see. whatever happens it will lack a bit of length and two shot holes so it might never make 5 star but I suspect it will always remain one of my favourites.

Another thing that struck me last night, we don;t tend to have multiple pins in the UK because erosion doesn;t tend to be an issue, this course does have multiple pins however for increased fun factor. The 11th hole has 3 positions making the most of the island, the third hole has a superb pin position out onto a peninsula in the river and there are a few others out there too.

Edit December 2020

Course design has just finished on a further 8 holes in the woods on the Western hill. These will be playable from Easter 2021 onwards and will in time expand to another 12 holes over there giving two loops of 12 holes and elevation and woodland. As soon as these are open it's upping to a 4.5 and once all tees are sorted to the standard the owner has in mind this course will get my first 5 star review. It will be an absolute destination course once finished.

EDIT. Rating updated to 4.5 stars. More and more work has gone into this course. There are now 10 new holes in the wooded hillside adding elevation and woods golf to the parkland riverside 12, there will be 2 more in time to make 4 loops of 6 holes all starting at and returning to the bar for much needed refreshments mid round. .

The club house is now open and complete. The restaurant and bar are now revamped with superb massive outside seating area overlooking the 12th and the 5th hole baskets.

Final thing to turn into a 5 star will be introduction of quality teeing areas throughout.

It really is a little slice of Disc Golf heaven in a secluded welsh valley.

EDIT 31st August 2021

Well it's having it. First 5 star review. I was up there on Friday to sign off on the new 10 holes. Innovative new tees have been created on the hillside which I might start implementing elsewhere - great grip, easy to lay and easy to maintain. The new holes play better than I had hoped (and I had pretty high hopes already!)

It's my favourite course played to date and has something of everything, woods, water, elevation, open, long, short all wrapped up in a beautiful location with accommodation and superb food. Get out there to play.

Edit May 2022.
We've just run the inaugural Welsh Open here.

The rounds are filmed and will hopefully give some of an idea of the beauty of this course.

We had a number of the top players in the country here many of whom ranked it as their favourite ever course to play with, risk, reward and thought required at every tee.

Can I give a course 5.5 stars?
