Cleaned up NICE! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 10, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Challenging because of trees, angles & distances. Excellent mixture of throws required.

Cons:

Watch out for tree stumps - OUCH! Without knowing where I'm going, it wouldn't be so easy to get around... signs aren't so helpful/available.

Other Thoughts:

Can be humbling, but my goodness it's fun now that it's been cleaned up & baskets are restored.

NOTE: There are more than a few places to lose discs so bring extras or play safer lines.

the g-way 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 15, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

there is a great mix of long and short holes. none of the short holes save 2 or 3 are easy birdies. trees are large abundant and fairways are fair. gateway will challenge players of all skill levels. easy enough to navigate, and not very crowded unless theres a tourney. the park itself is very secluded. fairways continue to get easier and is no longer as much of a jungle as it was. the city did away with the big concrete deals on hole 5 so the smell is gone. trust me it was really bad. most holes are wooded with only a third being out in a field. wind isnt as much of a problem here except on a few holes. water is practicly non existant most of the year and drains pretty well after a rain. there are plenty of places to stop and take a break along the way. i play here often and shoot in the high 50's low 60's so dont expect to be 6 under unless you're a god.

Cons:

can become boring if played too often. this course really does favor a rhbh thrower. some people may count this as a pro but i like some variety.there arent any elevation changes which takes away from the rating. trash is a big problem here and not much is being done to help. there are a few trashcans but they are almost always overflowing. come on ft worth its bad. at the moment holes 6 and 10 are missing baskets. also due to the construction on hole 5, the basket has been moved about 300 feet closer to the tee. hole 5 used to be 707 ft and was one of the signature holes. bikers do use some of the trails around here so watch out.

Other Thoughts:

very fun course with a few flaws. one of the better courses in dfw. on a side note if you notice the loop in the back of the park you will notice many cars parked or driving around. these are not golfers. do what you can (within reason) to get these people out of the park. they are up to no good and in my opinion take away from the park.

A Definite Must Play! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 17, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

*Lots of diversity throughout the course
*From talking to players that had played there before, it sounds like a ton of work was done on the course to get it in shape
*Excellent use of the landscape
*Very tough course (I list this as a pro because playing courses like this will force you to improve your game or suffer a lot of bogeys and beyond)
*Great location for all residents of the metroplex

Cons:

*Signage needs to be improved. The condition of this course is at a championship level. The signage should reflect it. If you haven't played here before take a picture of the course map by the hole 1 tee pad so that you can follow the course. It can be tricky.
*While I enjoyed the complexity of the course and the challenge it presented me, I think a few holes could stand to have a few trees removed so that it is more friendly to all levels of players

Other Thoughts:

I was fortunate to be introduced to this course when I played it in the North Texas Tournament Series # 2 by StraightLine Discs. The course amazed me and could be easily on my Top 10 courses in the Metroplex. My score the day of the tournament wasn't very pretty but my appreciation of the course was on par! If you haven't played this course yet, do yourself a favor and make the trip. Make sure to bring a lot of patience with you cause this course will certainly test it.

Great Improvments 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 3, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Most of the underbrush has been clear out. You now clear lines to throw towards the basket. Nice big tee boxes. Good paths to the next Tee Boxes good mixture of tight technical shots and long bomb shots with pars to match.

Cons:

Needs better signage to guide you to the next Tee. Probably needs little more of the underbrush cleared out.

Other Thoughts:

The last time I played Gateway it was so over grown with briers and thorns and if you threw into the rough you risked getting all tangled up. The course is now fun to play we'll definatly play this coursre again. If you played the course before the up grades last summer and you thought it sucked, give it another chance I think you'll be pleased

I love this course! Difficult, but I like the challenge....

got a bad rap 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 24, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-awesome, challenging, wooded fairways
-legit par 4's and 5's
-multi-throw holes with necessary landing zones
-nice concrete pads, some are a bit short though
-discatchers easy to see in the woods and in good condition
-double loop design
-tee signs are there but new signs are needed
-lots of really challenging shots
-great variety of distances
-water danger on 13 & 14
-lots of subtle elevation changes in the fairways
-well-balanced between lefty and righty shots
-a few open shots are a relief from the thick woods
-colored spokes on the baskets indicating direction to next tee
-plenty of parking, restrooms, sport fields, etc

Cons:

-navigation is tough the first time, bring the map here on the site; there was a map at the kiosk but right now it is all faded and basically gone.
-many stumps and brush along the fairways, the condition is much improved after the summer 2012 renovations but there are still areas with heavy underbrush and stumps that need to be ground.
-the signage is fairly inadequate, there are posts with the hole number and par but with lots of blind, wooded fairways this place needs better signs. a few well-placed next tee signs would be very helpful too, particularly at the 2-3/4-5 trail intersection and after 14 and 16.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course with shady beginnings. It's nickname, "The Privy" was well-earned but it's starting to apply less and less. There was a huge amount of work put into the course in Summer 2012 clearing out fairways, trimming trees and brush, lining trails with branches, etc. It is in much better shape now and smells considerably less bad than it used to.

This par 62 beast is very challenging with only two open fairways and two more that play into or out of the woods. The latter two are tough, long, multi-throw holes with landing zones you'll want to hit. There are many other holes like this where accuracy is key but distance is still a factor. These are balanced by a number of shorter, deuce-able holes but none of them are easy!

The Trinity River comes into play behind 13's basket and along the right side of 14's fairway. There are lots of mounds and minor but sudden changes of elevation in many fairways. There is also a great balance of lefty and righty holes and various S shapes and doglegs.

This course is a great challenge for the advanced player or intermediate players that like a little abuse. Probably too frustrating for beginners as the fairways require a good bit of accuracy. I thought the fun factor was great with lots of exciting tee shots and holes that I really want to play again immediately. 3, 5, 7, & 16 are awesome long holes and 8, 9, 13, & 15 are great shorter holes, with 15 being a particularly fun ace run.

The amount of work put into this course recently has really made it a much more enjoyable experience. Much thanks to those that helped. Probably the most challenging wooded holes in the metroplex behind the Lester Lorch courses. Not my favorite course in the area but definitely worth checking out if you are into difficult wooded courses.

Cons:

- Heads up for cut down trees and random tree stumps! They'll trip you up if you're not paying attention.
- Navigating around the course your first time may be a little difficult.

This course is FUN! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 5, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice DisCatchers, concrete tees and lots of fun factor. This course has a little bit of everything and only favors the player that can throw with accuracy. You will have to use every shot you have playing a single round on this course. Lots of risk/reward throughout. You will be humbled, but so will your opponents. If you and your friends are evenly matched, this course will separate you on the score sheet. Did I mention that it's fun to play?

Cons:

This place needs some signs. Navigation is tough. The front nine has been played a lot more, so it's a lot better than the back. There isn't very much in the way of elevation changes. This course needs to be played often by a lot of people. The back nine needs to be beat in to speed up play. We spent a little too much time looking for discs. I'd think that this isn't the course to play after a rain.

Other Thoughts:

The whole course is playable right now (November). Go play this course this winter and beat it in. The wind isn't a factor on most of the holes giving cover in the winter. If this course wasn't 45 miles from my house, I'd play it all the time.

Very UNDERrated! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 7, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very cool course with tons of upside and potential. Nice discatchers which always rank high with me. Concrete tees even though they are installed backwards. You will need every shot in your bag to score well here and a little luck here and there wont hurt either. There are some open holes to test your arm and allow you to bomb shots and then there are alot of tight shots that test your accuracy. There are also alot of short shots that allow you to get your bird with a well placed shot but can turn into a bogey if not worse for a shot that doesnt make it. The fairways are pretty righty/lefty friendly as there is a good mix of holes for both players. Nobody out there at all, so you have the place to yourself and it allows you to throw multiple shots if you like. I love the technical aspect of this course because you cant get away with a bad shot. You get what you deserve and it makes you work for that bird and even that par for the most of the course.

Cons:

Navigation is a nightmare if you dont have a map and even then its difficult at times. Very overgrown in places making it hard to find shots and baskets at times. Even some of the fairways are overgrown not making for much fun. As stated before the layout isnt that great, there are many long walks between holes. Lots of trash all over the place, dont know if trashcans would help but maybe it would be a start. The underbrush is horrible. Watch out behind hole 13 for the river, any shot that stays straight and has any power on it will be in the Trinity. Not for the faint of heart.

Other Thoughts:

This course is awesome! If there were some upkeep here this course would rank higher then it already does in my book. A little TLC and this course would be the talk of the town. If you like short courses or those where you can shoot 54, this isnt the place for you either. Watch all shots because even if you think you know where it is, the underbrush will get it. This is a killer course and I will be back for sure even though there are alot of downsides.

-tight lines to work on accuracy
-plenty of shade through most of the course so hot days are not too bad
-baskets are in good shape
-challenges you to use lots of different shots
-there is multiple lines to choose from but they are very difficult to hit

Cons:

-so thick and un kept up with
-not begginer friendly
-very easy to get frustrated playing here
-if you get off the fairway it can easily cost you multiple strokes or a lost disc
-sometimes a good looking shot can take you some time to find the disc
-lots of briars and thorns to get caught up in or scratched from
-gay people get together near the course and you have to play a couple holes with them at your back

Other Thoughts:

overall a great course. without the gays and briars i would rate it higher. plus when it rains and we are not in a drought the course gets overgrown. at the moment its a great place to play. will sharpen your game for sure.

Gateway Rundown!!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 10, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Concrete pads
-Easy to find
-No course population...my boy McLeod said it, "Everyone is scared to play here."
-Difficulty Level is probably the highest of any course in the area.....THIS MAKES YOUR GAME BETTER.
-No trash really.
-Surrounding park area is nice as well
-This courses par 5's are TRULY par 5's

Cons:

-A bad shot = bogey or higher...I've tapped out on some holes
-Not too much shot variety here...long winding fairway -- narrow -- with tons of trees.
-Don't play when it has rained, because it pretty much sits on a swamp.
-Have a map, you'll get lost
-Thick briar patches, thorns, lots of ivy...wear pants, even in the summer. I've got battle scars from this course.

Other Thoughts:

This course has it's share of cons for sure, but I think that most of them all relate to the fact that this course is really difficult. Everything that can go wrong in a game can and will happen out there... x10. I haven't shot good out there yet.

Toughest course in the area by far, which is probably why I rank it so high.

Play it for sure, it's a good one, but don't underestimate it... it'll eat ya up.

Challenging, Narrow, Raw 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 15, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Extremely narrow fairways make this unlike any other DFW course
- 2 True par 5's. 4 par 4's Total Par: 62
- No gimme birdies (9, 15, 18 are your best bet)
- 4 long open shots to let out frustrations. 18's drive can be very cathartic.

Cons:

- Course is still developing. Very raw.
- Confusing layout due to hiking trails. Needs more guide signs.
- Watch out for "park boys..." between 12 and 13
- Rough is so thick that most holes require a pitch back for an errant drive

Other Thoughts:

Climo's famous words: "learn to throw straight and beat the game" are a fitting mantra for Gateway. Most holes require a 300' shot that must land perfectly straight. The hardest course in DFW, Gateway will make you work on your technical game.
Navigation Hints:
Hole 2 to 3: Stay straight on X in the path
Hole 9 to 10. Come out of woods, take right, walk along curb
Hole 10 to 11: Cross street, enter woods near the road gate, Hole is parallel to street.
Hole 11 to 12: Cross street again
Hole 12 to 13: Go out of woods, take a left, walk along curb till you hit the pad

Seriously, WHOA! This is one of the hardest courses in North Texas. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 19, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is an exceptional course, and extremely extremely difficult!! From hole one you get can either get with the program and start drilling lengthy and super accurate shots, or you can start working on chopping the trees down on shot at a time...(my 2nd round was best defined by the latter). So, yeah...hole 2...15' away and 15' wide is your window to a short hard dogleg left, but really it's not as bad or difficult as it looks. So, it's after this hole you REALLY need a map...hole three is a mess of an ordeal. From the tee-pad all you can see is woods, nothing else really...well, you can kinda see a little path in the middle of the 3' tall weeds. But still, the hole is awesome and even though I couldn't see the basket, I just kept shooting to where I thought the pin was and all worked out...so I guess you can say the layout is intuitive.
I could keep going hole-by-hole, since they are all impressively difficult and thus very enjoyable. But there should be mention of hole 5...300'-ish through WOODS, then another 300'-ish up a hill...fun stuff for sure. Nine is nuts...totally doable though, and after 9 is over remember that 10 is a ways away...or wander around for 1/2 an hour like a jackass like i did.
The back 9 are definitely sweet, with a wide and wicked array of holes/shots. Also, there is a giant creek/gorge that plays as a backdrop on a few holes, and unless you really screw up you shouldn't really have to interact with the creek. All and all, just keep you shots down, try to keep your aim true and you should be alright.

Cons:

Underbrush, thorns, tight to non-existent fairways, and if you stray from one of them or happen to ricochet off the side of a tree (of which there are a'plenty) you are screwed 90% of the time, or at the very least scratched to all hell by the thorns.
The tee signs are LAME, and yes, the distances are good to have, but for as extreme as the holes are there really should be much better signage. And yeah, if you have a map you are better off, than without. But the bottom line is, that if you are going to make a hard ass of a course, you should take the time to invest in some signs that will allow folks to know where they're headed...
This course is only going to get worse for the next month or so as spring progresses, a freshly cut course with all the vegetation trying to grow back, nature's little creature friends emerging from the winter...and me and the dude I was playing with both kept stating how it felt like if you weren't careful you could very possibly step on a snake...

Other Thoughts:

Okay, so my complaints about the course are nit-picky, and I will admit that the improvements this course needs are probably only missing since the guys who put this course together had to fight to get the funds to even put baskets in, for which they deserve much kudos. And I fully understand WHY the signage may be lacking, but none-the-less the addition of better signs would be superb. Also, the course being on the rough side is just a by-product of putting a course in the midst of a freakin forest...and really, the hardcore rough does well to encourage a player to stay within the tree lines. All and all, this is really a spectacular course and truly is one of the hardest courses I have played to date...it's so hard I actually played by the signs, if it said par 4 or 5 then dammit that's how I played it! So yeah, do yourself a favor, pack a lunch, plenty of liquids, your bug spray...and then go out to Gateway.

Can You Say Tough?!?! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 10, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is a monster. It has enough twists and turns in the tunnel fairways to keep you looking for new routes constantly. There are about 4 holes in the wide open and maybe 2 of them you can throw big on. There are lots of technical fairways and trees to navigate around. I personally love that kind of course. You may find yourself throwing many mids until this course gets used enough to clean out the rough more. The par lengths are excellent and the basket placements are actually quite fun.

The cement tee pads are of a suitable length and are well placed. The signage on each hole does have the distance (seems to be GPS) and the hole numbers. The welcome sign at the beginning of the course is beautiful and has a great map. The baskets are obviously brand new and in great shape. There are a few signs pointing toward the next tee on some trees (could use more of these to help first time play).

Cons:

I would like to start off by stating this is a freshly cut out of the woods course. So some of the negative things I am stating here will go away with time. For now, you should be wearing pants when playing here. I have already seen one guy looking like he was in a razor fight on his legs. There are LOTS of thorns, briars, brambles and anything else that scratches, everywhere. I suggest taking a picture of the map with your phone or bring one from this site since navigation once inside the course is a little rough (again, it is new.) Until the fairways get worn down more, you may want to be using bright colored discs as some of the ground foliage is growing green and thick and makes it tough to find a disc. You need to really watch your disc all the way to the landing point or you may be looking for it a while. It would have been nice to have tee signs that show the hole layouts on them. There are no bathrooms or resting areas along the way so far.

Other Thoughts:

Playing help: When finishing hole #14, the path splits along the river, take the left path back into woods to avoid a REALLY long walk to #15. Watch for the yellow wooden "mando" arrows on hole #5. There is one on a tree in front of you on the tee and one on the tower in the open field.

The Fun Factor on this course was as high as it can be. I loved all the technical stuff and great use of terrain. I will be coming to this course often. It is by far the toughest course in the Fort Worth area. I am rating this course high as most of the negatives will be as it is gets more use. The fun factor and difficulty is so worth it.

This is going to be a great course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 1, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

I played this course in the hangover classic on new years day. This course is great. It is a finese players dream. It has a mixture of long dog-leg shots as well as a ton of obstacles to throw around. I dont think there was a simple hole on the whole course. I loved the way the developers used fallen trees and bushes as obstacles. This course ate alot of peoples lunch yesterday. There are a couple of mando shots as well as maybe two open field holes. People with big arms and no finese will have nightmares on this course.

Cons:

Since it was the first time anyone played on the course, there were thorns and briers everywhere. Once people play it enough this shouldn't be a problem.

Other Thoughts:

I think this will be one of the favorite courses in the DFW area. The tournament was great, and the course was THE BOMB!
