Bad and Getting Worse

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 14, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Gilbert Middle School is a short, 9-hole layout. Playing in an open field behind the school, this is a simple layout.
- This is as basic a layout as you'll find. The layout is divided between an open field and baseball field. If it weren't for the holes playing on the ball field, you would have zero variety.
- Great course for mid-range and approach practice. The nine holes average just under 175 feet, with holes ranging from 107 to 235 feet. My round consisted of a putter and a mid-range disc.
- Course is easy to navigate as holes are in a confined space. And with tee signs for each hole, it's easy to find where to go next.
- As for variety, you have to get creative in looking for subtle differences. The two most interested layouts are #5, which throws over a short fence from the field to the baseball field, and #6, which tees off in the outfield to a ball in front of the backstop near home plate. With #6, and #2, you can throw a disc into the fence and see about getting a kick back.
- If you wanted to introduce kids to the game, here's a great course to do so. Give them a couple discs to throw and you'll see even new players make a good throw or two.
- Good for a quick play (not that it's convenient). I finished up in less than 15 minutes. Any time you save can offset the drive to bag this course.

Cons:

The course's only flaw is that it's a bad, simplistic design. There's plenty of room to have weaved a layout through wooded portions of the campus. It's a shame to waste a set of nine baskets.
- Lack of variety. Because of intentionally limiting the amount of space for the course, it also limits hole lengths. Even by adding a little length to several holes, it would require players to think about pulling out drivers.
- Do you enjoy throwing one direction in an open field, turning around and throwing straight back in the opposite direction? If so, you'll love holes #3 and 4. At least you make 90 degree turns from one hole to the next on every other hole.
- Course isn't close to much else, disc golf wise. You're 15 minutes or so to Pisgah Park. Besides that, it's several other nine-hole layouts in the region, or drives back to Columbia or around Lake Murray.

Other Thoughts:

Gilbert Middle isn't for the faint of heart. Even they deserve a layout that will keep the energy level up. Except for Ryan.
- It was fun hopping the outfield fence to get from #7 to 8. Usually on a disc golf course, when you hop a fence, it's to retrieve a disc. Here it's to keep you from having to walk around the length of the outfield fence.
- The tee pad for #1 and the basket for #9 are extremely close. You barely have to walk back to your car if you park here.
- I played this course as part of a course-bagging road trip. I'm getting close to playing all listed courses (on DGCR) in South Carolina. Most of the remaining unplayed courses haven't been played for a reason. This trip end up being an exercise in futility of playing one bad layout after another. This course was no exception.
- No aces for me this round, just some tap-in birdies. Even the ace runs wouldn't have been that memorable. A layout this simple will easily be forgotten. And I'm fine with that.
