Pros:

This review is for how this course is RIGHT NOW. There is loads of potential here, but I can't judge a course on what might happen. Lord knows we've all seen courses that ran out of money or interest or whatever. I am rating this course as I saw it today. It's all I can do.

Baskets - I love the DD veterans. They catch very well, and I love that there were a couple of different colors of the baskets in he park. The red ones were MUCH easier to see, but all of them were nice. If I had my druthers, these baskets would be in a lot more courses.

Park - There are lots of bathrooms throughout the park that are easily accessible. And though it is a multi use park, MOST of the time, the course doesn't really interfere. I'll talk about the design elsewhere in the review, but the park is wide open and the course uses a good variety of spots.

I like that there are 27 holes to the course. More holes is more better. And for my money, the A-I holes are the shining moment of this course. I really like the way that they feel more techy and scenic. C is probably the signature hole on this course, with the basket in the crotch of the tree, but I REALLY like holes D and F. F is a very pretty shot and makes great use of the available natural hazards.

There are some good holes that were fun to play. I especially liked holes 2, 4, 16 and 17. These holes made good use of elevation, or the trees or some sort of roll away green.

There are two pads for most holes, and two pin positions for most ( if not all ) of the holes. I played a round from each of the tee pads, and while the longs don't really alter your shot, they do make the course more challenging.

There are brick tee pads on most holes (and it looks like they are close to getting the other ones in). it would help if there was a 2x4 at the front of the pads though. some of them have gaps where the sand is washing away.

Cons:

There are no signs on this course. So it really is unplayable without a map. This has to be a big con and really drags the score of this course down for me. If you came out here without a map, you'd be completely lost. And sometimes, the map doesn't do a great job of showing you where to be.

Most of the holes are straight ahead shots without a lot of trouble. And truly, holes 6-10 feel like filler holes. From a design standpoint, It feels like these 5 holes , and 4 more could have been left out, and then used the a-i holes to fill out an entire 18 hole course. It feels like the alts might have some more variety, but I did not get to play those.

Lots of holes play right next to, or through shelters or playground equipment. If anyone was using any of these items, the holes would be rendered unplayable. A good example of this is hole 10 that plays over a playground set and a shelter, with a mando that ensure that you'll be risking hitting that gear. Again , these holes FEEL like filler.

Hole 12's long tee pad throws over the basket for 11. This seems like a pretty glaring design problem. And while the elevated tee pad is super neat for the longs, you couldn't play the hole if someone was withing 50 feet of the basket on 11. The same kind of concern comes into play on 14's long tee pad, as 13's basket is a few feet away and very much in the line of fire.

some of the flow is wonky on this course. I'm thinking specially of the walk from 3 to 4, and then the voyage from 4 to 5.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, this course has a lot of potential and I am glad that Winchester has it's own course. Coupled with the Union City course, there is some good park disc golf going on. While these aren't "championship caliber courses", they are just fine.
These would be fun courses to learn on and to practice with.

I definitely want to go back when there are sign posts in the ground and the tee pads are all finished up. I am also curious to play the other pin positions to see if they offer some different shots.
however, if I do go back, I'll probably skip holes 5-10 and just go to 11 from 4, as that feels like a natural flow anyway.

For right now, this course is getting a 2.5 or "decent". Which is absolutely the adjective I would use to describe this course at the end of the day. With signs, teepads, and maybe seeing the alts, I think it could be a legit 3.5 course.!

Go play Winchester and see what you think, and then roll over to Union City for it's sister course. Small town park golf !
