Strong start, with an average finish. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 21, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- The Big 3: All boxes are checked here. Good Chainstar baskets, well executed metal signage, and new concrete pads on every hole. Based on previous reviews (and the look of the pads), I think the concrete pads are a new addition and very welcome to this course. It appears that the nice signage was a later addition as well.
- Amenities: I counted 6 benches total. A couple of these were very appreciated after long climbs uphill on the previous hole. A few more would be nice due to the elevation, but the current amount is definitely better than nothing. I counted 6 trash cans as well. Both benches and trash cans were fairly well distributed through the course.
- Alternate Pin Locations: I'd say there was an average of 3 pin locations for every hole on the course. I noticed a couple with 2 and a couple with 4. If these are rotated with any kind of frequency, this could make for very different rounds.
- Boulders: I wouldn't label this course as being very beautiful overall, but a few of the earlier holes (2,3,4) are stunning with large boulders. #3 features an elevated basket on top of a boulder. If you play Lemaster and only have time to get in a few holes here, I would certainly play 1-4 which can loop you back close to the car.
- Navigation: I remember this being fairly challenging the first time I played here. The addition of metal arrow next tee signs are a really great addition. Many courses could take note on how easy of an addition this is and how much it positively increases an experience.

Cons:

- Course Map: While there was a kiosk, there was no course map available. The new directional arrows help tremendously, but this would also be a nice feature
- Short: This course can be very short on certain holes. additional tee pads would help with this. Also, the farther back pin locations help with this tremendously.
- Basket Visibility: This course has you frequently walking ahead of the tee to find the basket for multiple reasons. The orange tape on the center pole has worn off and most and could use a replacing. The multiple pin locations leave you wondering which placement is active. Some flags atop the baskets would help out significantly I think.
- #17: This hole puts a damper on this course for a few reasons. It is one of the longer walks from the previous hole and can be hard to spot across a road and parking lot. It is currently throwing directly over a semi-busy road. The signage only shows one pin location even though I counted three. While you don't finish on this hole and #18 is fun; it can leave a bad taste in your mouth.

Other Thoughts:

Not pros or cons:
- Alternate Tee Pads: I noticed 3 total alternate pads on this course. While that is a pro, I think a few more alternate pads could make this course more interesting to a larger group of players.
- No Turn: While a halfway turn is always a nice pro, this course is short enough to take this detail out of the con category.
- Elevation: This course has a good bit of steep elevation. While I think elevation is just shy of crucial, this course has a level of elevation that might deter some players for various reason. However, if you like a good bit of elevation, you might really enjoy it.
- Pin Placements: I think this course would stand to gain a lot by doing one of two things: Have all pins set to one locations for the entire course (example: "All pins are at location B") posted at the kiosk. Or have current pin location indicators located at the tee signs.

Up and down through the woods we go 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 28, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Each hole is unique, challenging and still give you the opportunity to card some birdies. Really enjoyed this course. Some beautiful rock locations on the first few holes. Lots of opportunity to work on tunnel and control shots.

Cons:

Layout seems to meander allllll the way around the park.

Other Thoughts:

Would definitely stop back and play this course if I were anywhere in the area.

Not the Best Alabama Has to Offer but it's Not Bad 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 26, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Nice course in a very nice neighborhood. It's a short course mostly, but most holes have at least another pin position. The overall challenge of the course could change because of the different pin placements. A couple holes had four different pin locations.

-The front nine consists of a lot of elevation change. You'll instantly see that on the first couple of holes. Hole one is pretty tight and uphill. Hole two is straight downhill in the woods. The elevation continues until you get to hole twelve. #8's basket is high up on top of a hill that you tee off on the bottom of. #11 is a very fun steep downhill anhyzer over a creek. Couple others, and a couple of the holes here have elevation changes just over thirty feet.

-Very cool rock formations on holes #2-4. One of them is probably fifteen feet tall and is an attraction for locals. Fun to walk up and sit for a while on.

-Tee signs are nice and accurate with great hole diagrams.

-Playing in the Magic City Megabowl. Was good practice for my round at Clay (tee off was close to 2 PM). You can easily play this course and throw some multiple practice shots in an hour.

-Mostly wooded, but has a few holes that are more open. I love #8. Steep uphill. #9 is more open even though you are throwing out of the woods and into the open. The basket is in a different wooded section. Some other holes are kind of in between wooded and open.

-The chainstar baskets catch very well. Shot eight under. My drives weren't great but my putting was good enough.

Cons:

-Repetition of fairways. Primarily on the back nine. There were many holes that play slightly to the left when I played here. Just barely. Starts on hole #6. The next hole was very similar in regards to fairway design. A couple of the holes were fun, such as #9 being a nice small hyzer sweeping slightly left. But the ones on the back nine were all pretty boring. Not only is the repetition in fairways (slight hyzers and anhyzers). No real curves here.

-So many extra pin placements, but only one of them is not a par three. That is #18. I'm sure that there could be a couple more par fours at least.

-I think wellsbranch250 nailed it in his cons. The holes are pretty short and basic, but beginners will probably get bored. The first five holes may interest them (they are all pretty wooded at least) because they are all fun. But the course gets very boring and loses its creativity when you get to #12. Holes are short and tight with nothing too interesting to them. #17 is boring. Plays right by the road and is just a simplistic hyzer. #18 is an okay finisher in the open, probably the best hole from #12 to the end.

Other Thoughts:

-I thought this course was pretty good overall. Not the funnest around the area. Civitan is across the street and offers a different disc golf experience than Greg Carter. You could easily play a couple of practice rounds or just one of them if you are on a work break. This course is no where near as fun as Clay or Inverness, but it's still decent.

-If the basket locations frequently change, then your experience here could possibly be better the next time than the first or the other way around. If I play the Mega Bowl next year, which I plan to, I'll come here again.

Long Walk, Good Holes 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 19, 2020 Played the course:once

Other Thoughts:

Great course that plays primarily in the woods with a good mixture of hole types. Most of the holes test your ability to control the disc, but a few are wide open challenging your distance. The course wraps around several baseball/football fields and can be a hike. Make sure you bring some water.

Makes 36 Holes With LeMaster 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 22, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

(2.637 Rating) A short technical course.
- RAW BEAUTY - IMO, the best quality of Greg Carter DGC, is its beauty. A few holes have big rocks in the path of play. For example, the ones on (4) are the size of a trucks. Several fully wooded lines as well and a few lines have significant downward elevation. There are however a few holes that bring the overall quality back quite a bit. Five holes have roads in play, including the last four holes. Hole (5) (8) and (9) have baseball field fences in play. There's also a utility pump in the back-left view on one of the nicest wooded holes, hole (11). I think nearby John LeMaster looks a touch better overall.
- NEW TEE SIGNS - The tee signs look less than a year old and they were artistically done well.
- NAVIGATION - Perhaps someone from the area read the previous review comments. I caught the comment for lack of directional signs between holes on a few reviews. Well it's been remedied, as there were arrows after almost every basket on my round. Next tee direction on the signs is unfortunately only on tee signs (4) and (5). Sure these two holes are a couple of the trickier transitions, but I had stopped looking for them by hole (4) and only realized there inclusion when I went through my pictures at a later date. My only true on course hick-up was after (16), where I did wander a bit trying to find (17). So overall, not too bad.
- UNIQUENESS - Average. Mostly heavily wooded but, a also a handful of moderately wooded plays and a couple lightly wooded shots. A nice mix of elevation, using up shots, down shots and valleys. Water comes into play with the usage of a small creek. A pair of giant rocks are spit on (4). The degree and amount of shot shaping lines is nice too.
- LOCATION - Located in the same neighborhood as LeMaster. The combo is a solid 36 holes of golf.
- TIME PLAY - About average. Figure 60 to 65 minutes for a quick solo. 2 1/2 hours for a typical foursome.

Cons:

A nice course, with only minor issues.
- LACK OF CHALLENGE - A few of the holes may be a bit too simplistic for those looking to play Advanced level courses. I think this course suited best for players rated between 825 and 900. The course will be too short for those that can drive over 350. The challenge is mostly one dimensional. It favors those that can consistently hit short twisting 10 foot wide fairways. 8 holes are less than or equal to 200 feet long.
- MULTI USE HAZARDS - As mentioned above, roads and baseball fences in plays on over a half dozen holes.
- OVERGROWTH - I played in late December. There was a lot of dead overgrowth off fairway. Thus I would surmise it will be a bit wild during the summer. I'd check the course conditions before heading here during that timeframe.
- TEES - I was teased with concrete on the first hole only to never see it again. The pad on (1) looked new so perhaps some great things to come. The remaining holes are carpet pads. A few are good, most are ok and a few a very uneven.
- BEGINNER FRIENDLY - I wound not recommend this course to a beginner. I would suggest Pinson, Magnolia, and George Ward to the short baskets as better beginner options.
- TERRAIN - Not the best course for those with knee issues. My previous suggestions of Pinson, Magnolia, and George Ward, are again all better options.

Other Thoughts:

Greg Carter is less than one mile from LeMaster DGC. Considering that nearby course, this is great spot for those looking to play 36 different holes within a two minute drive. Oddly I played them on separate bagger trips to area. Regardless, I'm glad the styles are between the two are different. LeMaster is a hybrid wooded park style course and Greg Carter is a short technical course. For those outside the area, this course is not in the upper tier for the Birmingham scene. Clay, George Ward and Inverness all receive and deserve more acclaim. I'd research and try and hit one of those courses before here. I'd also take LeMaster over this one as well, if I had to choose between the two. If I lived in the area, I'm sure I'd play both.
- CHARACTER - The basic equipment and extras are about average. The best extra feature is the multiple basket placements. I hope they switch them around as that would get me to work Greg Carter into the rotation more if I lived in the metro area. I also liked the spread out amenity of a half dozen benches. As for things that should be added, it definitely some extra tees to lengthen some holes. I only noticed one extra tee on (6), but (17s) claims one as well. There's also a cheap practice basket that I'm sure a kind local donated. Definitely better than no practice basket.

Pros:

Challenging wooded shots with beautiful scenery. Good signage, made course easy to navigate when I had never been there before. Not crowded, easy to play at your own speed.

Cons:

not the most unique course. Some of the shots are kinda run of the mill.

Other Thoughts:

Good course, lots of tight and technical wooded shots. It flowed well and had good signs, we always knew where to go next. It was a good course, but I live an hour from it and it may not be worth the trip several times. If you live close, this would be a good home course for you to practice accuracy.

nice but not well maintained 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 1, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Variety of different shots. Lots of elevation changes. Mostly shady for hot summer days. Baskets are mostly good. wasn't crowded. scenery is nice. some big boulders scattered around.

Cons:

Tee pads could use some work in places. Basket #9 is missing. found the post but no basket. Some tee signs are missing. you have to cross a road to get to the next tee several times. can be confusing. Grass was high in places.

Other Thoughts:

This is a very nice layout and design overall. It does however need some work. There are tee signs on most holes but some are missing. Most holes have arrows directing you to the next hole but not all. One long walk between 7 and 8 with not a lot of direction as to where to go. Overall it flows ok and I did find all the holes but there were some navigation issues. Most of the holes have either 2 tee options or 2 pin positions but not both. You have to look for the pin because it is not indicated anywhere which one is being used. As I said above #9 basket appears to be missing. I just played object to the post I found. tee pads are mostly natural or with a soft covering. not really long enough. Could be better. Most of the course is in the woods but on a few that were not the grass had not been cut and was fairly high.Course is in a huge multi use park so I know there are bathrooms around but I didn't seek them out. Course generally stays away from the other areas so I didn't see any issues with other park users being in the way. With a little more TLC this could be an excellent course. I would play there again.

Great Technical Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 7, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Technical fairways make you throw a diverse selection of shots! I love the nature hike aspect of this course with the beautiful scenery of streams, boulders, and hills.

Cons:

Park Construction have forced a couple of holes to be temporarily redesigned and held up completion of teesigns and teepads. Hopefully that will change in the near future.

Other Thoughts:

Once the Greenway project is complete, then we'll see Carter's permanent installation.

Frustration 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 18, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Loved the first 5 holes. Rating would be about a 4. However, never found 6 to continue my round.

Cons:

Come on folks. I am sure Greg Carter would not have been happy with a 5 hole course. Finding holes after 5 was the most frustrating thing I have ever done on any course. I looked for anything to guide me and found NOTHING. I actually was fired up to keep going but gave up after some 30 minutes of searching and also I even talked to a P&R employee...no luck. I am not sure he could even figure it out.

Other Thoughts:

Take care of the signage and help us all out. I would love to come back and see how the remaining holes play.

Nice baskets. Good scenery -- boulders, hills and such.

Cons:

I'd say impossible for a first timer to navigate without a guide. Not intuitive. Some holes too near ballpark or parking lot.

Other Thoughts:

I'm not a DG snob. Just a regular guy that's been playing a few years. I don't mind the lack of pads. I do mind the lack of signage. Come on. Just a few arrows, please?

Decent course in East Birmingham 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 24, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

* Hole 12 is probably my favorite all-time hole shooting downhill with a slight left break toward the basket.
* Good variety of shots throughout the course.
* Decently manicured.
* Easy to navigate course design.
* Up and down elevation gives a nice blend of shots and good exercise.

Cons:

* Needs concrete teepads on a number of holes.
* One hole on the back nine (can't remember which one specifically) is on a downright dangerous downhill. Makes it difficult to go down.
* Lots of short tree stumps that can cause injury.
* An errant shot can land in in-play baseball and tee-ball fields while kids are playing.
* Lack of signage.
* Hole 18 is a little too uphill.

Other Thoughts:

A respectable course that is in need of some work, but continues to improve every time I play it. I didn't really enjoy it the first time I played it, but I've since gotten the hang of the shots.

A good course to play if you are in the area, but nothing worth making a trip out of your way for as of August 2013.

New Layout and Open to Public 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 15, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Carter is very clean and it's new layout tends to flow smoother between holes. Expect short and technical holes with several major distance and open area drives.

Cons:

Tee pads are not yet installed on four (4) of the new holes, and be extremely careful navigating new holes due to stumps from previously cut down trees. Particularly, one hole on the back nine has numerous stumps and small rocks proving a fickle decline.

Other Thoughts:

This course just needs time to develop, I'm sure things like missing tee pads and benches will arrive in the nearby future. Carter's updated layout promotes new challenges, but at the expense of the removal of several great old holes (due to city construction).

Update*
I'd like to increase my previous rating from good to very good. The baskets rotating position, grass upkeep, and extension of hole 3 have provided a great summer experience. 9/16/13.
