Another course with 'magic number' problems/design flaws

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 30, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Aesthetics:

I think this the biggest pro I think of for this course as you get the pond, creek from said pond, lush green grass, and amazing mountains to look at while playing. Creek and/or pond being in play for a majority of the course. There is a busy street that the parking lot is attached to but it can hardly be heard from the course.

Elevation, hazards, and obstacles:

The course starts on a hill sloping down toward the creek with hole 1's basket just in front of it. From there you throw up and down this hill for the most part in the first four holes and also on hole 7 IIRC. This elevation does help make the holes fun. Hazards and obstacles mainly consist of the creek and pond but there are a few holes like 7 with a decent amount of trees guarding the fairway.

Overall you don't need more than a midrange on most holes considering the distance - I brought 2 putters and only wished I had something more on hole 9. This place is geared for the local families that want to play here I believe.

Cons:

Magic number problems:

Holes 5 and 6 are obviously here to get you to the 'magic number' which in this case in 9. Magic number problems are when you design courses with a set number of holes you want on a course (usually 9, 18 or a multiple of 3) without considering if that number is the most efficient or best use of the space given. Holes 5 and 6 are the result of said problems when you 'have to' make 9 holes - which are filler holes. If you have played here (or even if you haven't really) and you're reading my review ask yourself this question: Would this course be worse without two (TWO!) 100 foot, wide open holes? Of course not, you might even argue it would be better without these holes. Without pushing the magic number you could have combined a few holes and made it a nice 5-7 hole course. As is it's pretty much a 6-7 hole course anyway.

DANGER!:

There is one bridge in the middle of the course that is part of the green for hole 1, fairway for hole 9, and the walking path from hole 6 to hole 7. Also hole 7 has you throwing over the parking lot (it's not the only line just the only line that makes any sense) which is especially dangerous considering how much traffic this course gets. I played it around lunch time during the week and had to skip it for fear of hitting a few cars. There are countless numbers of other people here playing the course or just walking through the park utterly oblivious or not caring that they are in a disc golf area. I almost had to scrap playing the course after hole 4 due to restrictions with other users which I've never had to due on a weekday in the afternoon.

It's just too short and not challenging enough to even make you bring more than 2 discs IMO. No serious golfers would play here unless they are course bagging whores like myself. What I'm gleaning from past reviews is that this course used to be better, then it got redesigned and it got much worse. Honestly with how busy this park is the governing body (city or county) should move the course to another park better suited for disc golf and less occupied by other users.

Other Thoughts:

There are some fun throws here (If you can actually throw without someone in your fairway) for your putter or superclass discs and nice views in a nice park but the design overall is severely lacking thought. I think I would designate this course as a baggers only course on a weekday before noon as it seems it's not playable any other time and not worth it to wait for people to move or skip holes.

Fun, but too short course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 15, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Harrisville, although a relatively easy course, can still get you on a wonky shot if you aren't careful and for that reason, I like it more than I should. Water hazards will always be a Pro in my book, as it makes any boring hole, a bit more intriguing!
- Hole 1 - Nice long putter or softer Mid Range shot downhill a bit. If you overthrow deep or to the right, water is in play.
- Hole 2 - only three holes allow a driver to be used, depending on skill level of course and this is the first one. Driver or long Mid range over a creek with a large tree in the fairway and other on the right. Lanes for both forehand and backhand.
- Hole 3 - Fun long putter or Mid Range on a basket that is set on the side of small hill, so even a close shot has the chance to roll further away.
- Hole 4 - Downhill Putter shot, with creek on the right and volleyball court on the left.
- Hole 5 - Worst hole I have ever played. It's just ridiculously short, nothing to make it unique..it sucks plain and simple. Now, if they removed that basket and the tee box for hole 6 and combined this hole, that would instantly upgrade it and make it a really fun/difficult shot.
- Hole 6 - Another really short putter shot, but at least it has nice features..Trees are in play, ther eis a picnic table on the left, the Basket is perched on top of a stump and there is deep water behind the hole.
- Hole 7 - 2nd hole that a driver can be brought out to play. you can either backhand and go over the parking lot or forehand on the left to get around the tress in the middle, but be careful, the lake is also on the left with possible people fishing.
- Hole 8 - Fun hole, another putter shot, or light Mid Range but this is right along the Lake, so if you pull it at all, it's in the drink.
- Hole 9 - Great finishing hole and can be thrown with a driver or long Mid Range. Really tough large tree right in the middle with a creek that crosses the flight path. Low ceiling shot is required for a backhand, You can also forehand as well. Easy hole to have a shot swatted by a tree branch.

Park is very nice as well and the shortness of the course makes this a really quick round.

Cons:

- Too short
- Really busy park.
- Hole 5 makes me salty every time I think about it
- The course map on this site is way out of date and the format is really different on some holes. (This has been fixed/updated by the site personnel on 7 July 2021)

Other Thoughts:

There is room to expand this course if they want. Would make this way more enjoyable. Great course to work on short game, with enough obstacles to keep you interested. Course is unplayable a lot during the nice months with how many people come to enjoy it for other reasons. Morning is best time that I have seen. If the lake and stream weren't here, this course wouldn't be worth anyone's time except for beginners getting into the sport.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 14, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Decent infrastructure:
*Tees are concrete and in good condition
*Metal tee signs on every hole with accurate length and detailed hole map
*Baskets are all functional, although a couple of the collars are bent and thus some of the baskets are slightly tipped
-Fairly beginner friendly. Only one hole is over 275', and most are in the 200' and less range. My main reason for not calling this a "very beginner friendly" course is the fact that 6 of the 9 holes have a water hazard in play.
-OK pitch 'n' putt course for experienced players. The aforementioned water hazards kept my brain engaged even though I was just tossing a putter on most holes. Nice place to work on your short game.
-Grass was green, lush, and mowed.

Cons:

-Similar to a lot of the other beginner-friendly courses in Northern Utah, the course resides in a busy multi-use park. Bike trails, baseball fields, sand volleyball courts, and a fishing pond all attract recreation seekers to the park. Thankfully none of the tee shots are blind, so the risk of accidently hitting someone is decreased. But you still may find yourself having to skip holes on a nice summer evening.
-7 out of the 9 holes are enjoyable, albeit quite easy. My only real complaint is with Holes 5 and 6 which are back-to-back 100' shots and extremely bland.

Other Thoughts:

This course is cut from the same cloth as other local courses located in multi-use parks. It really reminded me a lot of Clinton DGC, Mills Park, and Freedom Hills Park, with the distinction that Harrisville is the shortest of the bunch but with the added intrigue of water hazards. If I go back I will probably just bring an overstable approach disc (Zone) and all-around putter (Judge) rather than toting a bag around.

Redesigned and not great. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 16, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

- 9 DISCatchers in good repair. Not all well mounted, think a couple got a little wonky when they were moved and remounted. Nothing agregious.
- 9 Concrete or asphalt tees. Asphalt tees use a portion of the walking path. Tees are kind of short but not much run-up required on this course.
- Water in play on many holes adds some risk reward.
- Nice tee signs with all the necessary Hole info.
- Park is well kept. Grass wasn't tall and was actually being mowed while we played. Bridges are in very good repair.
- The elevated basket mounted on the old stump on 6 was neat.
- Hole 9 is a cool shot through a low hanging tree area, over the creek, and into a green that also has a low ceiling. (See also cons)
- The small amount of available elevation was used fairly well.
-Easy enough to navigate even without an updated course map. Holes 1, 2, and 9 remained unchanged.
- Free to play.

Cons:

- The redesign took what looked to be a solid intermediate/advance course and made it half intermediate/advanced half pitch n putt. Not sure who the intended skill set for this course is any more. I liked a couple-three holes but the rest were too short and easy to be more than pitch ups. With the water so close on some of those it doesn't even give you the option to ace run. It's murky water so retrieval would be difficult.
- Holes 5 & 6 are both right about 105'. Again, not sure what the intended skill level is as Hole 9 as described above is not an easy play.
- Hole 9. Probably the coolest golf shot. However, it crosses right over and walking path and bridge.
- User conflict is awful here. We played mid-day on a Monday and had to wait multiple times and ask a few people if we could throw certain holes. We saw 10-15 various kids(not a camp or some type of organized group) fishing in the pond and along the creek that the entire course runs right along. Other park users were just hanging out in the shade on the course.
- While the original holes that didn't change have some nice old trees to contend with the new redesigned holes don't offer much challenge and those that have the most trees in the way are the 105' holes 5 & 6.

Other Thoughts:

This course was quite the let down considering the early reviews ratings and mention of a longer back nine being planned for installation in 2015. Well, it looks like they went the opposite direction and gutted much of what seemingly had made this play well. Which, given the multi-use traffic we saw on a random Monday, isn't surprising. The course isn't bad, I just feel with the redesign, it doesn't play to a specific skill level. Intermediate would be the closest although some of the holes are just so simple even that seems a stretch. While the park and course are certainly well maintained, I wouldn't go out of your way to bag this. Either play during off peak park hours or plan to wait/skip holes/ask people to play through. Couple fun Ace runs, couple tough-ish shots and a bunch of holes that just don't feel like they fit together. I won't play this one again if I return to the area.

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 7, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Nice concrete pads and signage
- Great baskets with multiple pin locations
- A good variety of holes with many throw options and challenging hazards
- Its a nice walk in the park, nothing too straining

Cons:

- Can get crowded at times (mostly pedestrians not golfers)
- Fairways cross on a couple holes depending on the pin placements
- The creek is deceiving; you do NOT want to land in there.

Other Thoughts:

Its a real nice 9 hole course overall. Plenty of challenge for all golfers alike. Can't wait for the other 9 to be installed next year.

Technical Course in Nice Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 24, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Great technical course with lots of trees and water hazards. This course will really help you master low ceiling line drive throws, or high spike hyzers.

The course flows very well and makes excellent use of the available land.

There are two different basket locations for each hole which completely alter the course.

Cons:

Several of the tee locations are in potential fairways/basket locations of other holes, especially when the baskets are in the long locations. This isn't a problem if the course isn't busy. If the course is crowded, like it was at the Grand Opening tournament on Saturday, you just need to be patient before teeing off, and make sure other disc golfers are aware when you throw.

The tee pads were a little bit short for my run up. For most of the holes I didn't really try to gun it, so it wasn't an issue.

Other Thoughts:

While it is a peaceful park setting and the length of the course make it fairly beginner friendly, the high number of water hazards can be frustrating for new disc golfers. I highly recommend investing in a Disc Gator Retriever when you play this course.

Great use of space 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 22, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is set in a large public park with a creek winding through the middle. As we drove up I was expecting the usual wide open unimaginative set-up common to these types of installations.
Instead I was met with a creative, technical, small slice of disc golf genius. I tend to be overly critical when a local amateur gets involved in fairway layout, but in this case I cannot imagine a better design for the space available. Not a high end destination but definitely worth playing if you are in the area.
Concrete tees are installed fairly flush to the grass. (they are too short but you can generally achieve a run-up over grass)
Baskets are brand new discatchers.
Creek is shallow and marshy - hard to lose a disc (this is a pro)
Grass fairways are kept nicely mown by the park staff.
Decent mix of open and tight fairways.
Good balance of Left and Right.
None of the fairways are super long (<300)which is normally a drawback, however, in this case the some of the longer fairways require low flights or significant lateral movement. Stronger players won't easily reach baskets on #2, #3 and #9. In fact, #3 is only 230' but is heavily guarded by large trees and requires a severe left -> right flight. One of our guys parked it and birdied but his disc easily traveled through more than 300' of airspace.

Cons:

Short tee pads (8')
10' should be minimum and 12' is even better -IMHO
I checked and there is space behind each pad for crushed gravel or concrete extensions in the future.
No tee signs yet
Other park-goers are not yet fully aware of the course. Plan to pre-walk some fairways and POLITELY ask others to step aside and allow you to play through. In some cases you will be forced to skip holes.
Beware of fenced backyards. Most have signs indicating disc retrieval is not allowed. These areas are mostly out of play so no worries unless you have a strong wind or a poor thrower.

Other Thoughts:

Tip: Tee pad for #3 is not marked but we were told you are supposed to use the small depression in the asphault jogging path. NE of basket 2.

Try to play early in the morning to avoid picnic groups and kids exploring the creek. Above all, be prepared to skip over certain fairways as this installation is integrated too close to attractions to justify priority to golfers.

Overall, not a killer championship course due to the shorter lengths and lack of par 4 and 5's but experienced players should find this course challenging and enjoyable.
