Great front nine, mediocre back 9 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 12, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays through a sprawling park with rolling hills. Elevation comes into play on many holes, adding some fun downhill shots and a few tricky greens with rollaway potential. The fromt 9 plays pretty technical, with some tighter lines to hit and some thick rough in spots that punishes errant shots. The back 9 opens up and offers more distance and some fun chances to air it out.

The dual tees offer some different lines and decent distance differences. They make the course a little more accessible to different levels of players. Both sets of tees are large concrete pads with good grip and plenty of room. The baskets are in good shape, and the signage is good with distance and hole layout.

Cons:

There are some long walks between holes, and one takes you directly across another fairway. There are a few holes that are pretty close to one another. The back 9 has a walking path that could potentially come into play, and some of the fairways seem to get some walking traffic from picnicking families.

The back 9 is a bit of a letdown after the fun variety of the front. It plays a little too open and repetitive, and doesn't use the water available to add some risk/reward opportunity.

Other Thoughts:

This is a fun course and worth a stop if you're in the area. I almost bumped this one down to a 3.5 because of the end of the course, but there's still enough variety and fun throughout the beginning and middle of the course to make it deserving of the 4.

Beginners will find the wooded holes a little punitive with thick rough, but reasonable lengths. The open holes can be long, but overall the short tees are within reason for newer players. More experienced throwers will find some nice challenges from the long tees.

Dirty Harry 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 12, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

18 holes with nice concrete tees, 11 holes had dual tees. Good use of available elevation and provides a variety of shot requirements. Fairways were well groomed and defined and course is well maintained. Some good risk vs reward choices. Some of the best course signage I've ever seen made for some easy navigation. Nice bathrooms and water fountains by the parking lot.

Cons:

Poison ivy and some thick rough makes disc loss a decent possibility. Non disc golfers in the park can get in the way and the park is fairly busy.

Other Thoughts:

This course has some great scenic quality while also having some bite to playing. The holes can range from fairly short to really long so there is a good mix of pars and all the holes are fairly technical. I felt this course lacked in the fun factor department where a lot of the shots are basically forced so you can't really get creative with your shots.

I imagine this is probably the best tournament course in the DWF area. I'd highly recommend anyone in the area to play this course.

Pros:

This is my home course so I admit I'm biased. The first nine through the woods will test your aim. The back nine you can grip and rip. Very well maintained and clean. Great place to have a picnic before you start or after as your start and end by the pavilion and sprinkler park.

Cons:

Can get muddy if has been wet on the front nine.

Other Thoughts:

Love it.

Go big or go bogey. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 16, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

HUGE HUGE course
Very well maintained
Holes have long and short tees
Trash cans on nearly ever hole
Water fountains
Bathrooms
Great course for left and right handed players

Cons:

None that I can think off

Other Thoughts:

This is an amazing course! It is off the main road so its nice and peaceful, they take very very good care of it, all the holes on the course have a good amount of challenge and it doesn't favor right or left handed players more than the other. The first 9 holes are more wooded where you have to follow lines and the back 9 open up for big arm throwers.
Over all if you love disc golf play this course! I would not recommend it to new players because it could be too much for them though.

Another classic Houck course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 7, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-great dual concrete tees on most holes
-lots of epic, signature holes
-quality Houck signs, abundant directional signs
-lots of elevation, rolling hills
-great basket placements, lots of danger near the greens
-great mix of long, multi-shot holes and shorter, tight, technical holes
-legit par 4's and 5's, mostly longer holes but a few ace runs as well
-plenty of parking, lots of trash cans, water fountains, restrooms
-multi-use park with sport fields, etc.

Cons:

-a few places where fairways are pretty close together
-walk from basket 8 to tee 9 crosses fairway 3
-several tricky navigational spots but ample signs directing you to the correct basket, next tee, etc.

and if we're nitpicking:
-this place would be incredible with a little bit more water. it is disappointing that the lake between 17 & 18 wasn't utilized.
-hole 18 is a bit lackluster for the final hole on such an epic course. it would be nice if 17 were the last hole or if 18 had a long tee where you shot across the lake.

Other Thoughts:

This amazing Championship-caliber course is another testament to the brilliant designs of John Houck. It has all the signature Houck elements: epic multi-throw holes, narrow wooded lanes with a tree right where you would like to throw, great use of the available land and elevation, dual tees that add very challenging looks from the tips that also change the tee shot, legit par 4's and 5's, awesome Houck signs with distance and detailed maps. It is hard to ask for more out of a course.

The course is very challenging, especially from the long tees, but the fairways are fair, as are the pars. There is great variety in fairway shapes and shots required. The course is basically laid out in two areas. The front 9 has very distinctive feel with lots of elevation and lots of wooded obstacles. Hole 2 has a fun downhill drive to a well guarded basket and hole 3 is an amazing par 5. The back 9 is a bit more open and plays mostly through a lightly wooded meadow with rolling hills. You'll need to hit your dueces on the shorter 4-8 and 12-15 because many of the remaining holes require some serious distance.

Some have said that the back 9 doesn't live up to the front 9 but I like the variety of terrain and the different feel that each area has. There are little things here and there you could complain about but the overall experience here is tremendous. This is definitely one of the top courses in the Metroplex and I would recommend it to anyone, locals or visitors, as a must-play course.

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 28, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Well maintained park. Its very clean and the fairways almost make you feel like you're on a regular golf course. Good tee pads and signs, which make it easy to get around. Good mix of long and short holes, and there is also a good mix of wooded and open holes. There is a great group of locals that will help you out if you ask. If you have a monster arm, there is also a set of back tees which you can play.

Cons:

Because this is more than a disc golf course, there are sometimes other people on the course. I've actually had to tell a family that they shouldn't have their lunch under a tree on hole 8. The course is missing water holes, except for when the holes in the river bottom flood (especially on hole 6).

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoy playing this course, and because its only minutes from my house, I play it a lot. This course will help you develop your arm if you're a short knocker.

Solid TX Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 17, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is by far the best overall course I have played in TX. First, the course was overall in very good shape. Save for a few of the early wooded holes which had some trash, the course was clean and well maintained. The signage was superb, both in directing players to the next and and in describing each hole. Good mix of distances for the holes, and good shot variety. I played from the long tees, and often the tee was vastly different from the short, and the signage was neccesary. In addition, adequate elevation change and great use of the elevation change on the course. Favorite hole was 1, touchy hyzer with fast green

Cons:

The only thing missing from this course is no fault of the course, and thats simply more elevation change. I think the course rewards most good shots. There are a few holes which could have better lines, holes 2 and 11 come to mind.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 16, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is my favorite course to play because of the variety of shots it gives you. Some long holes and some shorter ones, both right and left doglegs, tight section of wooded holes that will test your accuracy and control, a few elevation changes and not much risk of losing a disc. My favorite is the signature hole #3. Easy to follow and clean. Advanced and beginner tees.

Cons:

Windy on most days except on the wooded holes of course. Some poison ivy in those woods so bring sanitizer or wipes. Could use a water hazard or two for extra variety but I hate losing discs so I'm fine with it.

Other Thoughts:

I've had my worst outing and one of my best on this course on consecutive trips. This course is a must play. Hope you enjoy this course as much as I do.

Woods and Drives 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 25, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Lots of variety, some long drives, some shorter finesse shots. A great challenge for all types of players. Never really very crowded and it can be done pretty quickly as long as you don't spend too much time looking for discs.

Cons:

Lots of brush and thicket on about half the holes, so sometimes there will be a minor throw error which will cause distress looking for the disc in the thicker parts.

Other Thoughts:

The people are generally friendly and as long as you pay attention you wont lose a disc. Sometimes ti gets a little windy, but I would say driving anything up to 45 minutes to an hour is definitely worth going to this course. I go about once or twice a week.

Tremendous Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 20, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is my home course so I'm extremely lucky. I've played it since it was installed so I feel I know pretty well what the pros and cons are. Excellent use of features of the land. Some water shots, plenty of wooded shots, distance, elevation changes. It's also easy to navigate with great sign-age. Wood steps installed and a bridge over the water so getting around is pretty easy. Very well maintained year round.

Cons:

Moving from 8 to 9, you cross over 3's fairway. In the spring and summer, the foilage gets very thick and can make losing a disc very easy. Often times, people are just walking around the fairways not paying attention which can get very annoying. It can get pretty congested and tends to bottleneck around 3 but flows pretty well after that.

Other Thoughts:

All in all this is a great course. It's challenging to say the least, but it has something for all skill levels so beginners shouldn't be scared away. Definitely worth the drive to Rockwall. Out of all the courses I've played, this one is easily the best in my opinion. Give it a shot, you won't regret it.

What's a snake bunker???? 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 1, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Loved the course!!! Well maintained and has a variety of shots. Nice park, and worth the 1 and half drive from East Texas.

The course is pretty easy to navigate, so first timers should be able to make it around with no issues.

Cons:

A buddy of mine threw his disc in the water behind #1 basket. As we walked walked down there we noticed something a little peculiar. 4 yes 4 water mocassins swimming around his disc. They weren't big, but a small mocassin is worse than a full grown one!!!! Anyway, I got the disc back and then we went and talked to maintenance. They told us to be carefull because they are apparently EVERY where!!!

It's understandable when you come in and modernize an area so fast. Rockwall has grown quickly and the snakes just have nowhere else to go.

SO BE CAREFUL OUT HERE!!!!

It's fun and worth the round just keep your eyes peeled!!!

Other Thoughts:

Fun course, will definitely return.

Keep your eyes open for snakes and CHALLENGE yourself and play the back tees!!!!

Best in DFW. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 21, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a great DG course. It feels almost like a manicured ball golf course. There are signs for all tees and even some signs pointing you to the baskets on some holes. The front 9 is more wooded and feels secluded. The back 9 has some more open holes to really air out your drives without hitting trees. Fort Worth has Z Boaz, Dallas side of the metroplex has Harry Meyers. I give a slight edge to Harry because it's less crowded, cleaner, and has the best signage I have seen on a DG course. It's a long drive from Ft Worth, but I will definitely be back soon.

Cons:

The park is used by non golfers too. I had to wait a couple of times for a dad with his kids who were hiking around in the woods on the front 9. After they saw me on the teebox they moved and also pointed to the basket for me. Not a big deal, but you have to watch out for the non golfers. Also on 17th fairway a couple had a blanket laid out and were having a picnic. I yelled fore and they watched my approach shot sail past them. Again, not a big deal to me but this course would get a 5 from me if it were a DG only park, like Lester Lorch or Z Boaz.

Other Thoughts:

My favorite course in the metroplex, even with the long drive from home to get there and the occasional non golfer getting in the way. Front 9 is better than the back, and the 19th hole is at Flying Saucer on Bass Pro Dr just after you cross the lake on the way back home. Excellent beers and a patio on the lake!

Wow, just Wow 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 1, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

I've never given a course a 5.0, but I had a hard time convincing myself not to give this course one. I think the one word to sum up this course is immaculate. When I watch disc golf in Europe I drool over the manicured fairways and actual rough. You get that at Rockwall. The fairways are so great and the way they use evergreens as well as oaks is genius. This course plays around the small lake in this community and makes you feel like you're playing in some alternate dimension where there are disc golf country clubs. A great use of natural terrain and water hazards. Signage is amazing. Back of signs painted with appropriate color to designate long or short tees.

Cons:

My only beef is there are a couple of par fives that are easy birds or even eagles.

Other Thoughts:

If you're based in Ft. Worth like me, you should really make a point to make the drive out to this course. You'll be glad you did. In my opinion, this is the most well maintained course in North Texas.

It's the best Jerry...the Best! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 26, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Hopefully you've eaten your Wheaties prior to taking on this challenging course. T-Rex type arms should just stay home or expect to score 90+. This course is the best maintained course in the DFW area, minimal trash, frequently mowed, mature trees, beautifully manicured, ascetically pleasing. The elevations vary throughout this course. You have to bring out your entire arsenal to master this beast, but it isn't impossible to shoot a good score. There are many different hole types, from relatively wide open, to threading a needle. This course had to be designed by a seasoned vet.

Cons:

No holes are over water. Crowded on weekends (with good weather).

Other Thoughts:

There is a multi-mile walking trail, a huge play castle/jungle gym (for kids), Skateboard Park, Softball/Baseball, and Football fields, swimming pool (fees apply for the pool), several ponds (for fishing) all in the same area. Even if you have a family that doesn't enjoy throwing disc, it'd be a fun filled day for the entire family as long as you enjoy the outdoors.

A good standard 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 27, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Well marked layout mingles well with the park.
A pleasant blend of wide open long tracs mixed with some tight technical ones.
This course is great for the first timer as well as the experienced player.
Just a little bit long for kids under 10, even if you play a scramble format (recommended for newbies)
Several holes reward strong players with precision throws, but don't penalize the duffers unduly for mediocrity either.

Cons:

Not much to moan about. There were a couple times where pinickers/volleyballers etc. crossed paths with the DGolfers but it was a very nice and extra crowded day at this park so hard to ding the place for that.

Other Thoughts:

This is a really nice place, with plenty of open space, however it is a very busy park so be prepared to wait and to log a longer round. That said, I cannot wait to get back this course.

Great Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 6, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Each hole was different and challenging.
The par 4 and 5 holes where fun, not just giant chuck feasts.
Undergrowth is mostly cleared out which is nice when you throw a disc in to the woods. Great terrain changes. Well marked signs. Was never lost once we got to hole #1.

Cons:

Only two things I can slightly complain about.
Would be nice to have a sign as you enter the parking lot as to where hole 1# is. Having never been there we parked near hole #18 and had to walk around a bit to find it.

Wind. Hope you have a few heavier disc to try and deal with the wind that flows through the park.

Other Thoughts:

Had the day off and wanted to try a new course so drove over an hour to this course. I was no disappointed. Pretty park and the course was fun. Wish it was closer to I could play on it more often.

One of the Best in the Metroplex 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 30, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

1. Course is long, yet challenging.

2. Everything is marked and all tees and baskets are in near perfect condition.

3. Has some good basket placement which requires you to use a variety of shots.

4. There is a huge difference from the regular tee and the pro tee (quite a bit more difficult).

5. Makes great use to the terrain (many elevation shots as well as tons of trees).

6. This course is never packed. Even if you run into one or two groups you can always start at at #1 and when you get by #3, you can continue with #11 instead and come back to #3 when course loops back that to the same hole #3.

7. Great parking and is well maintained, even the heavy brush is or grass has all but died off and does not affect shots (unless your looking for the skip to get more distance).

Cons:

1. This course like i said earlier, is very long, but it also has some holes that are open. It's not the "coolest" course to play. It seemed extra hot out there in the TX summer.

2. Even though they have added steps for some of the elevated holes, this course may put some wear on the legs of older people.

3. Could have put a few of the holes closer to water (has a giant pond in middle of the park). Water harzards are good risk/reward holes.

Other Thoughts:

I like this course. I play here as often as I get a chance. This course gives me a chance to work on all aspects of my game. I am not advanced by no means, but I can see how advanced, as well as beginner/intermediate players will enjoy this. Bring some water and try not to carry too many disc in the bag.

Pros:

Nothing really left to say. Everyone else has said it all.

One update though. The last time I played, on June 26, there was a group of volunteers improving the course.

Previously on hole 5 after your tee shot you had to walk down a pretty steep hill that has become steeper from the continuous use. This may be quite difficult and semi dangerous for the older disc golfers to get down. The volunteer group of kids were building very nice steps to safely get down to the fairway. They were using 4x4 about 5ft long and putting three for each step. Making the walkdown very easy now.

They also might have been adding these to the step up the hill after hole #7 because they looked almost complete with the hole #5 steps and still had lots of wood left. I will check in the next few days

Cons:
