Roanoke's Popular 9 Hole Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 23, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Highland Park Disc Golf Course is your typical park style 9 holer . The course sits not too far off the I-81 highway . The Signage is fine , with hole# , par , length and flight path . The tees are cement and roomy enough , except for #4 , which is more dirt and gravel . The baskets are Discatchers and are in good condition . Print a map , because there are a couple of spots that could confuse you . The grass was cut and this multi use park seemed pretty well taken care of when I was there . Most of the other park amenities don't come into play. There is a bathroom near hole #5.
When you pull in to park , you might see a basket almost right in front of you . That is the basket to #9 . Hole #1 starts across the street and a little to your right . The course divides itself into 2 different parts . Holes 1-3 are across the road from the parking lot , then the course picks back up after you cross the street from #3's basket and #4's tee box , a little up the hill . The rest of this park is an island with a road encircling it . Hole #4 starts a counterclockwise motion around this . The course can play fairly fast if not too crowded . There are a few grades here , but nothing that would qualify as a hill . Young locals were all over this course on the Saturday evening that I was playing this , and seemed friendly . Disc Risk : should be very low . There are a couple of blind spot throws and a spot or 2 near hole 7 , but if you are watching carefully and not playing at dusk , you should have no problems . There were no signature holes on this course , but there were a couple that stood out to me . #3 is a nice 517' hole that starts on the edge of the park ,runs up a grade , dodging a could of large trees , then descends on the other side to the basket which is flanked by a large tree . #9 is a slight downhill run 633' , mostly open into a section where there are a few trees close to the hole . This is a nice looking park . and if you are traveling , there are a couple of things the kids or Mom can do while you are getting in a quick round . This also doubles as a good warmup for the Mayflower Hills course which is only miles away . For a 9 hole course , there is a bit of fun factor here .

Cons:

---- Safety . The park is shared by a lot of the local population . Overreaching with a big drive from a newbie or casual could result in a nogginknocker . Be courteous . Some of them don't understand disc golf , how far someone can throw or how hard those discs are
-----Lack of Wow Factor : Nothing here really beckons you to come back , unless you live or work within a couple of miles of here . 9 holes , 1 pin position and 1 tee . Also , if you throw RHFH , you are going to be in your comfort zone for all 9 holes .
-----Hole #7 . Odd hole . The tee is right up against a cement park area and throws over a corner of the baseball field . I never saw the alternate tee pad for this hole , but I imagine that if you don't know where it is , you may have to skip the hole . More on the navigational issue .
-----Speaking of Navigation :A Next Tee sign from 3-4 and 6-7 and 8-9 would help .
-----Equipment : Need extensions on these tee pads, especially the 2 longest holes ( 517' & 633')

Other Thoughts:

This course would have had to be an exceptional one for a 9 holer to get a 3 , and I just couldn't see it . Maybe because it stands tall compared to the other 9 hole course nearby . That being said , it is a nice little course to work on your game with.
The design is pretty fair for what they had to work with . If you feel like getting in a fast 9 , this is the place for you . The surrounding area is safe , the locals seem nice . good eats in Roanoke are a small drive away .
My Recommendation : This is a good course for dates , families after dinner or leg stretchers after a long drive , newbies , locals, one discers , and Great for the course bagger . Not a lot here for the intermediate or pro , unless they want to work on game specifics . At least #3 and #9 will entertain them . Unless a local , don't go out of your way to play here , but it is a nice stop between the better 18 hole courses or after ( or before ) having dinner in Roanoke . Give the course a chance . You might like a relaxing play .

Super Solid Niner 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 1, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

This isn't a really big city park but the course fits into it really well. You'd think that you could leave the drivers in the car when you pull up to this bad boy but surprisingly a few of these holes have really good length to them, even a solid Par 4. It's park style golf but I'd say 8 of the holes are above-average quality and satisfying to play. Concrete tees on all but one hole and adequate tee signs are a pleasant surprise. It's also really easy navigate once you find hole 1 b/c it basically plays in a big counter-clockwise circle around the periphery of the park. Surprisingly doesn't come into conflict with the rest of the park, even the one hole that might has an alternate tee in case the field is in use. Though it is 9 holes, I think there's enough room that you could probably make up some alternate tees to create a 18 hole course if you're creative. Baskets are solid and you even get a practice basket.

Cons:

Hole 8 is a short, blah hole.

Probably deuce or die if you were really trying.

Other Thoughts:

I really liked the neat, quiet community this park is in, definitely a good place for the family. It's not an amazing course but it makes a great warm up/cool down course if you're in the area. I wasn't disappointed at all, just a fun, casual round through a moderately wooded, clean park.

Super Solid Nine Hole! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 16, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Highland Park is a great nine hole course, that hits pretty much every nail on the head for a park course.

Every hole has a nice Innova Discatcher, nice tee signs, and a concrete tee pad. This allows every hole to be played with almost complete ease, unless the basket is slightly blind.

For a nine hole course, there is a good variety of pars and distances, with a par 4 and a 5, and holes ranging from just over 200 feet to 600!

A good design, the holes make good use of the mature trees and rolling hills that the smaller park has to offer, while also not interfering with any of the other park activities, making a stress free environment.

Cons:

One of the major cons is the fact that the course has only one tee pad and basket position per hole, meaning the layout could very easily become boring after a few plays. A nine hole course should have more variety, that way and can play different ways and the locals can have a different and unique feel.

Another con for this course is the fact that it lacks a wow factor. Hole 9 is a solid par 4/5, but it's not even close to a signature hole. No fantastic views, secluded areas, it's just a park course.

Only nine holes, meaning if you were to play it twice for the effect of a full 18, the lack of different layouts means you are playing the same holes in a repetitive loop.

Other Thoughts:

This is one of the more solid 9 hole courses I played, and with the land that the park offers, it can't get a whole lot better. However, with the lack of variety and the lack of a wow factor, it can't get much more than a decent/typical rating.

The HIGH-light of Niner-LAND 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 22, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good concrete tee pads on every hole but #4. Practice basket.
Great tee signs, with sponsorship, and all the baskets are in good shape.
Very good elevation change on several holes, up, down, up and down and sidehill.
Surprisingly, a Par 4 and a Par 5 on this Niner.
Large, old growth trees thoughout the park, enough to make you shape shots, but no tunnel shots. Not much chance of losing a disc here.
Stays mostly away from other park users, dog park, softball and football field and brick sidewalks. #7 has an alternate tee to avoid the football field. The park is lined on 3 sides by a nice looking neighborhood, so it is probably popular with dog walkers.
Some really challenging holes for a Niner and a couple of ace runs, #6 and #8.

Cons:

Tee pads are a little short, especially for the longer holes. I usually started with one foot off the back and that worked fine.
ONLY NINE HOLES!! This is the kind of course I really like, a lot like Glenburnie in New Bern, large trees as obstacles, but not dense.

Other Thoughts:

As I played this course early one morning, I kept noticing areas of unused land, behind #1, beside #2, and beside #9. Thinking these areas could be used for another 9 holes, however that would increase the conflict with other park users and could lead to bad things.
I hope the park can be closed for tournaments and an 18 hole layout is used, including the wide-open football field at the top of the park. That would make a great course.
#8 brings you to a different side of the park, staring right at an old-school ... errr elementary school. A three story, brick with large windows beauty, reminded me of my elem school.
I wasn't sure of the neighborhood as I drove through downtown to get to the park, but it seemed to be nice, and few safety issues.
I really enjoyed #3 and #9. #3 is the up and down par 4, I had a decent enough drive, almost to the top of the hill, then threw a forehand that cleared the hill by inches then set sail as the ground fell away, was a little treed on the birdie putt, drop in par. #9 is the par 5, mostly sidehill, somewhat downhill, another great second shot left me in position for an easy upshot, and made the birdie putt, great way to finish a round!
Since Greenfield opened (and an awesome course I understand) I imagine that is where most of the better players in town go, but this is a very good, in town option.
I have no problem raising the current 3.25 rating with a 3.5. Probably the best Niner I've played.

Does The Roanoke Parks Department Own A Lawn Mower? 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 14, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Highland Park is a nice sized city park why just wonderful terrain for disc golf. That is gently rolling hills and plenty of beautiful, mature trees. There is a practice basket at the start as well as a course map. The concrete pads are nice sized and the tee signs show the route as well as trees to avoid and have the spondor's name and information. However, I was momentarily confused as the first sign is facing the wrong direction. No basket over there!

The course has decent recreational length distances and there's always a tree it two or three to avoid. Add in some fun downhill throws and some holes going uphill and you have the makings of a very solid recreational course. Because of no underbrush and no baskets playing close to fences, streets, etc. make this is an beginner's course, as well. Players with big arms will have a chance to air it out on a couple of holes.

There is a rather large tree down right across # 8's fairway. However, it's fairly easy to just toss your drive over the top of it. And then # 9 is a great, big fun finishing no,e at 633' and downhill most of the way.

Cons:

The grass had not been mown in a few weeks. It was wet this morning and after trudging through the 4-6" deep grass, my boots and socks were soaked through. After playing Highland and then Fishburn here in Roanoke, I am not impressed with the citie's park department's maintenance crew.

The restroom by # 5 was open but it's prison style. That means no door on the stall and no toilet seats. You never know when someone might want to break out of old Highland Park. See what life's like on the other side of the street!

Other Thoughts:

I can see the love fest with Highland Park. It really is a great park to house a disc golf course. If I lived here, I'd play here frequently. And I'd probably be writing letters of complaint to the recreation director. Someone needs to get that old boy off the pot and with the program. This is too much of an attraction here in Roanoke to not keep it mowed and looooooking fine!

There can be only one Highlander 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 3, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice concrete tees and signage. Good use of the available space, elevation, terrain and variety of distances. Practice basket by parking lot. Great course for beginners with little chance of losing a disc as there's no rough and more than ample fairways. Bathrooms by hole 5.

Cons:

There is little to no seclusion on the course being mostly open in the middle of a neighborhood as well as other park activities and may have some conflict with other park users.

Other Thoughts:

Highland park is a well constructed disc golf course and your basic park style course playing through mostly open space with sparse large hardwood trees and most holes have left to right slope playing counter clockwise around a mound. There's nothing really wrong with the course, but there's not a whole lot of challenge other than distance and some elevation and if you happen to hit a tree or wormburn there's a good chance to make a recovery shot. Hole 9 was my favorite, it's a great finishing hole being the longest and most downhill. If you happen to be in Roanoke this a quick fun play.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 29, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I'm from Texas and I came into Roanoke to visit family for the holidays. I am an avid disc golfer and for me to come into a new place and see a nine hole course as good as highland park is awesome.

When I see a nine hole course I see a course that I bring out my putter and take some ace runs! But not at highland park. From hole one I could tell this course would be a place where I could use my drivers and mids as well as putters.

The idea of a nine hole course is to be able to bring new golfers into the community. And I was fortunate enough to grow up in a area with a magnificent 18 hole course. When I play a typical nine hole course it disappoints me at the lack of effort put into the course but not highland park it goes to show that even with a nine hole course you can still have a great experience! The little pitch and putt nine hole courses are what keep people from playing and puts a hault on the expansion of the game of disc golf!

The fact that the course involves every shot in my bag is amazing! Coming from a nine hole course.

Need I forget the tee boxes are concrete which is very hard to come by in Roanoke!

Cons:

Tho there are not many faults in the course I can still only give a 3.5 because of it only being a nine hole.

If you are on hole ones teebox facing away from the basket you can see what could be a very nice mando tunnel shot! The point I'm getting at here is the course design did not use all of the Available land to its disposal.

As well as the tee signs are there needs to be more signage at this park especially in between hole 3 basket and hole 4 teebox, as well as hole 6 basket to hole 7 tee box and hole 8 to hole 9 teebox.

One thought that the city of Roanoke should put in mind is to create alternate tee boxes for every hole to allow the course to be played as an 18 hole course!

As much as I enjoy the concrete tee boxes they could be a little bit longer to encorperate a run up for those long holes.

Other Thoughts:

Highland park is most definitely one of the best nine hole courses I have ever been fortunate enough to play!

If you are ever in the town of Roanoke I recomend giving highland park a chance, I believe it would be a great place to let some steam off!

Best course in the county! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 20, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The only course in the county that has concrete pads! It is, perhaps not-coincidentally, the only one I'd consider playing on a regular basis. For a 9 hole course, this one has a wide variety of shots. Nearly all of the holes have elevation changes to some degree (exception being hole 8), there is a nice variety of left/right doglegs and distance goes from short par 3 putter shots to long par 5 (really should only be a 4 at most) where you can air them out. Many 9 hole courses are pitch and putt types, this one certainly isn't. Feel free to bring your bag of drivers because you'll need them as well.

There is ample parking being inside a larger park as well as a practice basket on the flat grass near the parking.

The course plays back around to finish at the same spot you start which is always a plus.

There is little to no chance you'll lose a disc. There is hardly any thick vegetation to speak of and it is located in a well maintained city park. If you shank one right on hole 3 you might lose one but that would be it.

Signs are excellent and give you all of the information you'll need. You shouldn't have any major navigational stumbling blocks, but I touch on that a little in my cons below.

Cons:

It's only a 9 holer...And I know that isn't much of a con for some people but the fact that there isn't 9 more shots for variety dictates I can't rate it as highly as an 18 hole course.

Navigation is mostly intuitive, however there are some potential stumbling blocks such as 3 to 4 (you have to cross the road and jump a small guard rail, but you should be able to see the tee from 3's basket) and 6 to 7 (Walk up the hill on the path towards the football field) Even finding hole 9 could be a challenge without a map.(Up the hill past the playground, near the baseball backstop).

Other Thoughts:

Hole 3 is a blind shot up and over a hill with a dog park on the right on the other side. If you aren't aware of this, it has the potential to fly into bystanders in the dog park. Not so much of a con as a warning. Same for hole 4. There is a distinct potential of hitting a car/walker on the road because you can't see them from the tee. Just something to be aware of.

As far as 9 hole courses go, this one is right up there with the best of them. It requires nearly every shot in your bag and is certainly not a pitch and putt deal. The concrete pads are what makes this course stand out, especially in Roanoke where the other 2 courses are both natural.

If you're in town and have free time, this is the course you should play. I'll give it the highest rating I give any 9-hole course, a 3.5. Would I make an extra effort to stop off of the interstate to play it? Probably not, simply because there is an 18 hole course in Botetourt county just north that is an excellent affair. But if you're in the mood for something quick and yet still challenging and enjoyable, give Highland park a go.

Currently Roanoke's best 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 4, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is easily Roanoke's best course. All three courses in the Star City are 9 hole courses but Highland Park is head and shoulders above Walrond or Fishburn. Concrete Tpads appear to be in the installation process. The park makes good usage of its limited space with plenty of large, old trees to protect driving lanes and baskets. Signage is very nice. Practice basket and hole 1 easy to find from parking lot.

Cons:

mixed-use park w/ walking paths cutting through some fairways and foot traffic could be heavy at times because park is located in a city neighborhood

Other Thoughts:

Roanoke deserves an 18 hole course.

Brand New and Like Its Always Been There 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 19, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Highland Park is as convenient as any course I have ever played. It is located very close to the main highways. The practice basket is right next to the parking lot with the first teepad right across the way. Concrete Tees were under construction during our visit but the course was still very playable from the sides. With concrete Tees this course will be a superb downtown facility. The lines are fantastic with additional options on most fairways. Elevation changes on every hole make for a very entertaining round. The overall design flows very well. The baskets are brand new.

Cons:

The only drawback to the course is that is located right in the middle of a residential neighborhood with lots of open air. There are no places to stop and use a restroom or facilities without being spotted from all sides.

Other Thoughts:

If you like Bryan Park in Richmond you will love this course. Its very similar but with concrete Teeboxes in the very near future.
