Hillcrest Community Park Was Very Foggy! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 27, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Hillcrest DGC just opened in 2017 and from the reviews I read, it appears that there is a club presence here constantly improving things. The morning I played it was so foggy you couldn't see the baskets 200' away. It made for an interesting round. Wandering around in the fog was a local nutcase, Captain Coconut, screaming at the top of his lungs about alleged conspiracy theories.

The course has good amenities, nice concrete tee pads, a practice basket, a small kiosk, and small tee signs. There are two basket positions which are indicated by a small spinner device on the signs.

The course is set in three different sections of the park. # 1 starts in the first section, then you follow the trail to get to # 2. I was a little confused through this part.

4-5-6-7 all played through the wooded area. I liked # 6 very much. It is just 138' in the A position but very tight and technical. Then the basket is set in a very cool position, behind four trees spread out and an evergreen bush about waist height.

I liked # 7 a lot, too. It play 229' slightly up and a slight hyser. There is a large forked tree which would tempt many players to throw through. The basket is then set right on the edge of this restraining wall. And it's a pretty hole, as well.

# 8 plays to a basket 250' which sits in a circle of five large concrete circles painted blue. Are these from an ancient civilization? Or the remains of a long ago forgotten tetherball mecca? I do think it might be fun to call them OB when playing with friends.

# 9 plays back 267' with an ugly creek on your right.

Cons:

The early navigation was a little tricky but it might have just been my disorientation caused by the thick fog.

Grass was tall and very wet.

Creek bordering 4 and 9 is nasty.

No place for big arms to air it out.

Other Thoughts:

The locals have apparently improved this course quite a bit. It's a nice recreational experience with contrasting holes between the more open parts and the tight technical wooded area. I enjoyed the wooded area with some really clever basket placements and the tight, technical lines you need to hit. Hillcrest is a very solid, rec course and one that I'd be happy to play in on a regular basis.

Pros:

• Easy to find
• Pretty easy to navigate
• Nice new baskets
• Very technical course
• Restrooms onsite
• Friendly locals

Cons:

• No signs yet
• Tees are currently just cleared dirt
• A little criss-crossy from #3-#6
• Some interesting characters hanging around the area

Other Thoughts:

Tips:
• When you come into the parking lot, park wherever and head across the bridge next to the restrooms. #1 is on the right, just past the end of the bridge.
• Tees are currently marked with sticks and orange flags in the ground
• Use the map on the Facebook page and follow the orange markers when you're there

Random Thoughts:
This is obviously a VERY early review as the course is not done but I did want to drop in and give the course crew some love.

Hillcrest is a pretty unique course in the area, in that it's probably the most technical. None of the holes are long but all require thought and precision, and what's nice is that in almost every case, you have multiple lines to choose from. Now, these are not wide open lines in most cases, so you do have to hit them within a few feet to be rewarded. If you can do those things, I imagine aces and birdies are in your future. For example, we witnessed an almost ace run on #9 while we were there (banged off the basket). Now, if you miss those lines, I wouldn't call it an unrecoverable situation but you will be penalized. Trees will knock you into the whoknowswhere and there is OB mapped out in spots, although we weren't 100% clear on where it all is just yet. But if there's a local around, ask them. We found all parties to be quite friendly. Here's where I should mention that this is a mixed-use park, so do be paying attention to the non-discers as they may be oblivious to your presence. There were also some interesting folks hanging around the perimeter who looked a little, how shall I say....just be smart and aware. But outside of that, this is a cool little park with some nice views, a little pond and stream, and some other activities if you're interested (e.g. baseball and jungle gyms). Circling back to the course, you also have a nice variety of field shots on #1, #2, #8, and #9 and some foresty shots on #s 3 through #7. I'd say it's a good spot for beginners and advanced folks with the only real 'disc danger' being the creek to the right of #4.

Bottom Line:
Obviously, this is still a new/unfinished course so I'll be returning to update this review/score very soon, but definitely don't let the newness stop you from checking this course out. We thoroughly enjoyed the technical challenge that it presents and look forward to the improvements and opportunity to sharpen our games on future visits. Great job so far, course designers.
