Pros:
Frank Wilson Park had a disc golf course installed in 2010. Coincidentally, that appears to also be the last year any attention was given to the Frank Wilson Park course.
- With some strong elevation on the first two holes, and a steep hill as a backdrop across the park road, I thought we might be in for a very challenging round. It turns out the only challenge was staying interested in the rest of the round.
- First 4 holes all do an excellent job of incorporating elevation. #4 is the biggest downhole layout, teeing off from the edge of the park road. Could be a fun, scenic hole when the leaves are on the trees. Not as much when the leaves are on the ground.
- Lots of birdie chances throughout this round. With a shorter layout, and generous fairways (by wooded hole standards), you can be aggressive without much penalty.
- #10, 11, 13, 16, & 18 all have nice throw across valleys, or slightly downhill layouts to them. They're more varied than most of the other holes.
- The Virginia Museum of Natural History serves as a nice backdrop on #14. It's easily the nicest thing around here. It probably would have been more a more enjoyable, and a more productive use of an hour's worth of time.
- Course is easy to navigate. That's a good thing.
Cons:
I'll be delicate in how I say this: the course is very bland. There are a lot of simple, straightforward layouts. There's a lot of wasted use of elevation here.
- The park overall is in poor shape. Money isn't going towards its upkeep.
- Odd perception. For a small town (population was 13K in '23), it took a long time driving across town to get to the park. There are a ton of red lights. Throw in driving up and down hills, and dealing with small-town drivers, just getting to the park is an adventure.
- Tee signs follow the stick-man interpretive method. Circle for the tee. Circle for the basket. And dotted lines shall connect the two. With that level of attention to detail, it's a great thing these holes aren't longer.
- No benches or trash cans on the course itself. There are trash cans in the park, so they're not too much of a detour. Although, based on the trash I saw throughout the park, they unfortunately seem like a suggestion for some people here.
- Tees are inconsistent. Some of dirt, some are mats. The only consistent is how inconsistently bad they are.
- The walk down some of the slopes – especially walking downhill after #3's basket and the walk down #4's fairway can be a bit tricky when conditions aren't great.
- It just isn't a fun layout. It's a wasted opportunity for sure.
Other Thoughts:
Poor Frank Wilson. Whoever he is/was, he deserved better than this park.
- The previous review for the course is from 2015. Even though it might be considered out of the way, that should be telling.
- After hole #4, the next enjoyable, or even somewhat decent hole is #10. Of the stretch from #5 to 9, #6 is the best of those, but it's a low bar to clear.
- The back nine only has 4 or 5 other decent holes to boot. Overall, in this course, there is not a single good hole. Maybe this is an unfair comparison, but there is not a single hole here that is better than the worst hole at Mayflower Hills an hour away. Not one truly challenging hole. Not one truly fun hole. If you want cheap thrills, people may say #4 simply because it's a downhill layout.
- This course isn't even close to being as good as Ferrum College or Farris Park, both about 30 minutes away from here.
- I'll give the course a slight benefit of the doubt that it becomes more scenic once the leaves are back on the trees. At least based on some of the pictures from the course, it gives a better impression.
- The course could use a good makeover for sure. Redesign some of the holes, improve tee signs and tee pads. That will go a long way to help this course.
- I won't be surprised if/when this course eventually dies. Just look at the fact this course only has 4 reviews in 14 years: none in the past 9.
- A very depressing layout for sure. The museum sticks out like a sore thumb in this part of town.
- I'd be surprised if I ever play here again, even considering the likelihood I'll be driving right by again to play Waid Championship's layout at some point.
