Kuna kuna kuna kuna kuna chameleon

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 14, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Good variety of left/right and right/left shot shape
- A few longer par 3/shorter par 4 holes
- A nice pond protecting a basket
- Green grass and semi open fairways
- Decent amount of fast greens to keep you on your toes
- Solid, level, concrete tee pads
- Right next to a serene river
- Lots of different types of trees for people who are into that sort of thing/perhaps a former arboretum?

Cons:

- Have to cross a busy street for half the course
- Lots of people jogging/walking dogs and fairways play down walking paths
- Not densely wooded but some trees with many fairways feeling a little too exposed
- Some short 'gimme' holes
- Course does not punish bad throws
- Narrow strip of land with an out and back style/tightly packed in

Other Thoughts:

Overall a quality course that is challenging but not a killer and a fun, easy walk. Most people can reach the majority of the holes but will have to throw well for birdies on most holes. Overall decent and worth playing if in the area.

Worth the trip 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 16, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

It's a worthy 18 hole course now...

You will find concrete tees and proper baskets on all holes. The grass has improved, and the trees have grown since the pictures were taken. The map from 10/2014 is also obsolete.

There is plenty of parking around, and the course is basically in downtown Kuna, lately one of the fastest growing towns in America. There are restaurants and bars adjacent to the park. So close, you can pop off the course and grab a bite or a beer and jump back on again. There is a river in play on several holes, and the course makes good use of the trees and slightly rolling terrain. This is going to be a super nice park once all the trees mature as the entire park is very tidy and well kept. That is a theme in Idaho.

It's rare to wait on people, and if you do, this is Idaho, most are eager to let you play through. People will even wait for you to fully catch them up to make for an even smoother transition.

Cons:

It's not really a con, but there are quite a few walkers and the occasional happy dog looking to give you a friendly sniff while trying to poach a scratch. These people filter through quite rapidly, and most of the sidewalks aren't precisely in play anyway. Dogs are awesome so there is that.

I have this peeve, and it can be seen on some of the tee pads. Now it may just be me, but I like flat and level tee pads. There are a couple of holes where the pads aren't level. Instead, they sometimes follow the terrain of the turf. Some of my friends like a longer run up and complained that some tee's were too short as well. Minor gripe, and its likely due to park management and the litigious nature of people when it comes to tripping hazards.

Other Thoughts:

Some of the usual suspects I play with say this may be the best course in the Treasure Valley. The same that complained the pads weren't long enough... I could be convinced. It gets scorching in the desert, and this course plays along a cool running river. It's an especially good choice for hot summer days. The place also looks better and better each time I return.

If you are a Boise resident and you haven't play Kuna yet, you need to check it out. You won't be disappointed. Although the holes aren't typically very long, the pins are well placed and the sidewalks, fences, roads and river make for challenging OB propositions. I like this place a lot.

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 7, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Has potential.

Cons:

Layout is impossible to decipher without a local. Course map is old and no longer accurate. No tees have signs - save a couple old ones that are WRONG. Some don't even have a clearly defined tee pad. Mediocre shot variety. Mediocre course, at best. Much better local options - ann morrison, eagle island, mallard.

Other Thoughts:

Don't waste your time.

Kuna Konfusion 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 3, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

The park that is home to Kuna DGC is a nice little park. The course is up to 18 holes now, and they have some nice variety. A little bit of elevation, a little water, and some nice trees make up the framework for this one.

A local greenway, with playgrounds, skate park, BMX track, volleyball courts, picnic areas, baseball diamonds and other things to do. The grass was cut nicely, and grounds were clean.

The hole quality is decent. There is some variety in the shot shaping, and also some risk/reward. Old parts of the course have concrete tees, newer holes are still being installed. Classic yellow Innova DISCatchers are on the business end of each hole.

Cons:

The layout is broken up by a road crossing, the new holes on a smaller patch of the park on the other side of the crosswalk. The concrete had not been poured for every hole at the time of my visit, but might be done by now. It was nearly done, and the holes were still playable.

The tees were not clearly numbered, but we managed to make it around and get all of the holes in I think. The temporary signs were just paper, with just the number of the hole, and some were missing.

The map and scorecard links are out of date. None of the new holes are represented yet.

A lot of the park is narrow, and several holes are near other holes, the walking path, or areas where people can come into range. We had to wait on pedestrians and request children to stand aside momentarily so we could play through.

There is water in play, and some of the trees and brush on the banks can get very thick and thorny. Barely got a Destroyer back, lost a little blood reaching in for it.

Other Thoughts:

I played Kuna DGC and Ann Morrison in Boise the same day. Kuna was fun, but there was a Labor Day crowd enjoying the nice weather. A busy park will be more likely to interfere with play here.

It isn't terribly difficult, but it does have some OB, and the variety is OK. If the signage is improved once the installation of the new holes is complete this will be a nice little course.

I was over par, and only made 2 birdies. I went OB more than once and had a couple of straight up bogeys as well. Still I enjoyed the round.

If you are in the area Kuna DGC is not far outside of Boise, and it compliments the Ann Morrison course nicely. It's no Bengal Ridge, but it's better than nothing at all.

Fun technical course in a nice park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 6, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Short technical holes, nothing too long.
Lots of right-turning tee shots keep it feeling fresh.
Mature trees and bushes keep it pretty challenging on a technical level.
Good for beginners to get a feel for the game, fun for more advanced players looking for an alternative to the typical arm buster "see how far you can throw it" courses in the area.

There is water danger on some holes but most of the water danger is on the approach shot or the putt, not so much on on the tee shot. I thought this added some risk, but the fun risk, not the other kind.

Cons:

People with big arms who really like to air it out will be disappointed with the general lack of that opportunity.
Personally I don't see this as a 'con' but some might.

If the park is busy, there will be people picnicking and using the park for other reasons and this can create danger on a few holes. I have personally run into people on holes 1, 2, 10, 11 and 12.

In the spring Indian"Creek" can be raging - a bad throw on hole 1 will cost you your disc. Unless you can find it washed up in Lake Lowell 20 miles away.

Other Thoughts:

Overall a fun course, not a huge variety of throws but it is different from other courses in the area. A good getaway course to "get away" from the usual overcrowded Boise options.

Can't wait for the rest of the holes to go in across the road. Huge potential there.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 24, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

• Lots of mature tree obstructions that make for some really tight flight lines.
• Good mix of holes lengths.
• Good mix of holes that favor BH and FH throws.
• Some elevation on a few holes.
• Concrete tee pads.
• Reasonably challenging course that will require a good game to shoot under par.

Cons:

• No tee signs.
• No next tee markers.
• No tee pad on #6.
• The park is narrow on the east side so there could be some crossover on wild shots here.
• Beginners might get frustrated because of the tight lines.

Other Thoughts:

I was impressed with this course. There are many big trees in the park that create some really tough tee and approach shots. You'll need to execute many different and accurate throws here. Only hole 6 is wide open. Holes 1, 8, and 9 could be a water hazard problem if Indian Creek is running high because these baskets sit close the creek bank.
Six additional holes are in the plans. If these holes are as good as the current ones, this park could be one of the best in the area. It would also be great if they could install tee signs and next tee markers. If these improvements are made, I will gladly increase my rating to "4" or higher. I'm looking forward to playing it again.

Great Job, Kuna! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 13, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good flow from start to finish.
Good use of elevation.
Good use of trees and grass.
Good use of water hazards.

Cons:

There were several areas throughout the course where water seemed to seeping from the ground, making for soggy walking. Not a course flaw, but a civic problem to be aware of.
If you have a big arm and like to let them fly, this may not be your course.
It's not near anything else, but you could easily play twice through and have a good time.

Other Thoughts:

Despite the proximity to Indian Creek, picnic tables and grills, and the pathway, the designer did a good job making sure there is never too much danger of ruining your game.

Hole 1 - plays right along the water.
Hole 2 - plays uphill back towards the parking lot and restrooms.
Hole 3 - the tee is behind the restrooms. Plays downhill and around the curve of the softball field.
Hole 4 - plays downhill towards to skate park.
Hole 5 - plays longer and uphill to the right of the path. Don't be confused by the basket to #8 down by the water.
Hole 6 - longest hole plays uphill and to the right in the (now) grass behind Pizza Hut.
Hole 7 - plays back the way you came into a hollow in some tall overhanging trees.
Hole 8 - starts down by the water and plays blind, dogleg to the right.
Hole 9 - backtrack a little for the tee next to the path. Plays downhill into the trees feet from the water's edge!
Hole 10 - plays along the path but is double blind.
Hole 11 - plays uphill back into the park.
Hole 12 - backtrack to the path to find the tee. Plays back into the park near the blue and orange BSO picnic table.

I ran into the Course designer out there and he told me I had missed the tee for #6 (it's tricky to find). He was pretty proud of Hole #8 and #9 and rightly so. He says they may be adding 6 more holes across the street next year.

Let's assume that this is a Par-3 course. Many of the holes are possible to Birdie. I was not having a game of my life and shot -1. It was pretty gusty and I had a 2 and 5 year old with me and I got a Bogie on #6 and a Birdie on #8 and #12. I hit metal a few times too.

Great course to play.
