New and Improved Layout 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 1, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

New layout- the new lay out is long throughout and technical after hole 5. I think they still do a great job using the water and paths as ob to create a difficult starting 3 holes. Once you get into the woods the shots a technical, but more than fair. There are lines on every hole. I would say there is only 2 "filler holes" now that they have changed 15-16. Even though the filler holes still leave some difficulty
Length- it is a long course through the woods with a few legit par 4s added in the mix. It's a tough pro level course.
Maintenance- whoever cleared the area did a fantastic job, it is so much easier to find discs than the old layout. You still are punished for missing your line, but it's not thorn central anymore, and once this course gets beaten in a little bit, it will only be better.
Fun level- this course is a blast, you have to decide on shots and have placement on most of the holes in the woods. The new hole 15 is a signature hole- 500 plus par 4, but there are so many other great holes on this course. I get whooped every time I play, but always leave happy. It's such a nice contrast to the shorter easier south course.
Elevation- there are several holes that use elevation to make some picturesque holes. I was so surprised when I saw them, especially being from the area, it was a very pleasant surprise.

Cons:

It's still easy to get lost from hole seven to 8. There are no permanent tee pads yet or signs, but I'm sure there will be in the future.

Other Thoughts:

Once the tee pads get worked out and signs are put up this course will be a 4.5, possibly a 5. It has the potential to be a top 3 course in Mississippi and one of the best courses in the Memphis area.

The #2 Course In Latimer, Not Moving Up Anytime Soon 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 5, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Walking down the road and next to the pond , I started at #5 ( I think ) and started the course from there . Whatever funds they injected into the South course , certainly didn't carry over to the North one . The tee pads are cement , still short like the South , but okay . The baskets aren't as good ( some Chainstars ) , looking older than they are , but still catch well . The signage is on some plastic white poster board that were all faded except for a couple in the woods , and unable to decipher . If you are an out of towner like me , and the printing on the internet map is so small and make you unable to read the hole numbers , then yo will have a lot of problems with navigation like I did . I stood on a tee near the ball fields for 5-10 minutes trying to figure out how to attack this course without skipping a bunch of holes . There are still water carries on 2 of the holes , and a scary throw on one of the holes that come close to the water . There is a good amount of wind that will affect some of your shots here . Some of these holes have some clever placement . You can get back some of your strokes in the short woods part of this course . One of the holes has a water carry that you will land your initial drive near a woods . If you misplay the drive , you stand a chance of losing your disc in the small lake . Your 2nd shot plays with you mind . If you cleared your drive away from the woods enough and threw it a decent length , the you will throw your approach to a sort of inlet , with water to the left , water directly behind and water to the far right . The course was windy that day and I didn't want to risk losing my approach disc , so I swallowed a 4 by throwing my putter 3 times . The hole previous to this one has a basket that sits at the top of a man made hill . Nice touch . After the water carry hole , turn right and walk along the inlet part of the lake and near the woods where you will duck in to the woods for the next hole . You will face a series of short holes ( looking like they number 9-14 or 15 ) . through this woods . You may want to walk up the path on some of these holes . The woods covers the baskets up sometimes , and I threw a Hyzer 120' past the basket to where i thought it would be .After following these paths , you will eventually pop out to several holes that stay on the outside of the woods and run along the road line . Some of these holes are kind of boring and offer little resistance to your game . There is a nice little downhill throw that winds up in front of an elevated basket . Also , when you follow the second pond , it will take you to another water carry hole which will take you back to the parking lot .The course design is okay , and the park Dept. keeps the open holes moved ,Waterand bathrooms are close to the water carry hole Signature hole is the first water carry hole to the inlet .

Cons:

#1 sad , but the navigation for this course is terrible . One of the worst . The signs are ridiculous . and you are never sure where to go from tee to tee .record you score so you don't miss any of these holes . I was backtracking several times . #2 . Bugs . They are terrible here . Not much the park can do , but the lake and woods make these critters hungry for flesh . Douse yourself with generous helpings of bug spray And check for ticks afterward . #3 . many of these holes will seem like they are too easy for the intermediates or the pros . #4 Some of these holes come dangerously close to the road and cars . If this park is busy , you may have to stop and wait. #5 The rough is pretty unforgiving in the woods . and even on the sides of the open holes . Watch your drives closely . One pin , one tee on this course , except the water carry hole .No benches or trash cans on this one so carry out what you carry in .

Other Thoughts:

A compliment to the South course , without the compliments . Still , the holes mix it to the point where it is worth throwing a round either before or after the South course . With some better signs , a course cleanup , and a better course map , this course might be pretty good . And you have to remember that there are back to back course that will give you hours of enjoyment . My recommendation : If you only have time for 1 round , definitely play the south , but if you are not in any hurry or are from out of town , then you should come to this park AND PLAY !

2nd course in Thorn Lake is a Monster 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 4, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The newer north course at latimer lakes park in what locals call thorn lake MS should be played at least once if at all possible.
pros-
-technical-excellent training for learning control-conservative golf. only 1 hole is wide open with no ob or serious trouble in play. It's pin is on a large mound under a large overhanging tree. The rest of the "open holes" have serious trouble that has to be respected. Good training for scrambling [unless it's just plain unplayable, but hey, that's training...]
-variety of shots. Most with tight fairways lined with thick brush or OB.
-manicured fair fairways [usually] but narrow
2 water carry holes, with allowances for shorter arms.
-#3 hole is one of the best designed, risk/reward, fair, but most difficult holes ever, IMHO. Of course i hate all the strokes i get on it. [see the map] Throw across [or around] a corner of the lake to a thin landing strip. Diabolically, the shortest throws go to the thinnest part of the strip, and as you try for more distance, the strip widens, enticing you to try for more than you should. Throw too far, your're in dense brush that's usually jail. Once you're over the water, you have a right turn with water [usually] lurking if you go too far or don't turn enough, plus it's downhill just past the corner. After this corner you might have a long putt if you're lucky. see the course map.
-concrete pads. they're grippy and level, but on the shorter side. 8'? Best thing about them is that they help you see where next tee is.
-rolling elevation, not extraordinary, but not flat.
-several holes are decently downhill for fun factor
-pretty park, well kept with nice park amenities, incl playground for young families

Cons:

-biggest con to me is the busy road and walking trails the are such a big part of the course. several holes play a lesser used unpaved trail as the fairway and you're throwing around blind corners that someone may be coming around. Several holes throw down or across a more heavily used paved walking trail and to be safe you need a spotter to let you know no one's coming. I usually play early and by myself so i just throw and hope i don't hit anyone. so far, so good, but poor design. The fairly busy road is a close OB hazard on several holes. One hole[#13 ] is an open field that necks down to a narrow fairway with v. thick sticker-y brush on right that you need to avoid that pushes you toward the busy road OB on left AND it's BLIND. A mound on the left hides the road from you so you can't see if cars or walkers are close. It's a well designed hole as far as fun goes, but it's ridiculously dangerous. [see the map and bear in mind you can only see to the right...]
-no signs at all and problematic navigation. play with some one or use the map
-punishing rough. most is very thick and thorny, incl 2" osage orange thorns. I took 2 unplayable penalties today. On the flipside, teaches you to control your shot and stay out...
-#8 mando unclear,[ unless you have a course map.] tee points right of a mando tree with no arrows, to an unlikely looking tree studded curving "fairway", while left of mando is more open less curving 'fairway' to pin. [i think the more inviting left path has been "devised" by players who don't like the mando, but you can't tell...] OK, the map shows me it is to the right, but I'm leaving this in, because when you're looking at it, you can not tell. I hadn't seen the map until now. Hey there's a pic of this hole here-check it out. I know i said most fairways are clear, but this one isn't...
-busy park. A lot of walkers on the road and on the trails. Plenty of cars on the road, but at least they're out of the way quickly enough. Walkers can be so slow...
-no alternate tees [except am, int, and pro tees for water carry #17] or pin placements
-no amenities on the course. have to go to other areas of the park

Other Thoughts:

The accuracy demanded and the punishing rough may not appeal to some golfers, but you should try it

I enjoy the challenge of this course. Still has a new, unfinished feel. Much more challenging, more of a 'big boy' course than the south course. And less crowded. And did I say, more dangerous?

The holes of the course I'd rate 4 discs. I knock it down because of the safety concerns and lack of signage or direction, and no alternate layouts.
