Pros:
+ Baskets: 18 Innova Discatchers. The bright yellow bands are easy to see from a distance.
+ Short and Technical Course Design: This course is made up of all par threes and holes generally don't go much longer than 250'. That doesn't mean it's a birdie-or-bust layout because nearly every hole has tight wooded fairways that require accurate line shapes to score well. Elevation plays a role here so expect to hike up and down hills during your round.
+ Tee Pads: This course now has brick or pavement tees for every hole. They are flat and provide ample room to run up although most players will opt for stand-still throws on most holes.
+ Secluded Park Setting: This course is seldom crowded and the thick woods make you forget you're in South Charleston. Aside from a couple bike trails you're unlikely to see many park users after you tee off on hole #5.
+ Extra Amenities: Aside from the disc golf course this park also has playgrounds, picnic shelters, restrooms, hiking trails, basketball courts, ball fields, and a soap box derby track.
+ Local Club: The Kanawha Valley Disc Golf Club hosts quality events. The Kanawha Valley Regional is among one of the biggest sanctioned tournaments in the state and boasts an excellent players pack along with fun and challenging courses. The club also hosts weekly leagues during the spring, summer, and fall. Random draw doubles rotates between the Kanawha County Courses is typically scheduled for Tuesday evenings at 5:30. Doubles is a free league with an optional $2 ace pot.
+ Location: Little Creek is minutes away from Charleston - the capital city of West Virginia. There are plenty of options for food, shopping, entertainment, and lodging nearby.
+ Proximity to Other Courses: Little Creek is within 30 minutes of several quality courses including Valley Park, Redeemer, Coonskin, and Wine Cellar.
Cons:
- No Practice Basket: Players may opt to warm up on hole #18's basket which is beside the main parking lot. Be wary of players driving on the final hole as it is a blind shot from the tee. To practice shorter drives you can use the softball field by #1's tee box as a warm-up area if it is available. Soccer fields are closer to the park entrance if players need to air out some shots before playing their round.
- Signage / Navigation: There are few signs to help navigate the course and holes do not have any information to give accurate distances or pars. This is not a huge deal unless you're a first time player. Most transitions between holes are intuitive and the majority of baskets can be seen from the tee pads.
- Access: Jefferson Road and the surrounding area can be congested with traffic during peak driving times. The gate is typically closed for winter months making the course unplayable for most of January and February.
Other Thoughts:
This was the first course to be installed in the Kanawha Valley area and it holds up as one of the most fun layouts in the area (especially if you like wooded courses).
There are several "signature holes" that are really fun to throw...
#5 - This short pull is a straight downhill shot with a couple tight lanes to choose from.
#8 - The 8th hole may be the tightest fairway on the course but the distance will require a harder throw to get a birdie chance near the heavily guarded pin.
#14 - Although this hole is a rare break from the woods it still requires accuracy. Players will throw uphill to a blind pin position on the right with the road playing as OB. Be sure to make the mandatory. Swing it wide for the easy par or play it close to the mando if you'd like to try for a birdie. This hole is one of my dream aces!
#17 - This is arguably the toughest hole on the course and the only one I have yet to birdie. It's a blind dogleg left that will require accuracy off the tee for a par and a brilliant drive to get a birdie look.
There are a select few locals that take care of the course when maintenance needs to be done. As most fairways are wooded you may find the rough to be challenging in the late spring and early summer. Fairways are worn in enough that players will be rewarded with a favorable lie after making a good shot.
This design is short enough to be enjoyed by all skill levels but challenging enough that more advanced players won't be bored. I leave all my distance drivers out of the bag although a few holes may call for a fairway driver. Accuracy off the tee and canning putts will be needed to score well here. You will inevitably find yourself off the fairway during your round so bring your scrambling game to save par where you can.
If you only have time to play nine holes you can play the original layout by playing holes 1-5, skipping to hole #11 to your left, playing 11 & 12, skipping to hole #14 uphill to your left, and finish up near the ball fields on hole #15.
Give Little Creek Park a try if you're in the area. As a local I feel it is much better than the rating suggests, especially with the new tee pads in place!
