Might Be Worth The Stop Just To Experience # 8! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 15, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Two holes Rock at McVay Rock State Park. The other seven range from average to the ridiculous. The park sits right up from the beach. A bad hyser on # 1 could sail over the ridge and down into the surf. But the day I played, the prevailing winds coming off the Pacific were so strong that no mortal's disc could cut through them and find the waves. However, the howling winds could easily blow your disc three holes eastward.

The course starts under the large tree by the dog park. There is a small kiosk with course map. The pads are nice sized concrete. There are no signs. The baskets are Mach V's.

1. 230' straight and open with ocean cliffs on your left. Wind made this hole virtually unplayable. Actually, it made almost every hole unplayable.
2. There is a simple sign here that says # 2. There is a large rock outcropping here. The basket is placed well beyond and around the rock. Without wind, this would be a decent hole.
3. A long wide open 325' hole to the basket. You are now playing on a mowed pasture. It had been been mowed sometime recently but you still feel like you're trudging through it.
4. At this point you cross the little bridge to get to holes 4-7. The # 4 hole is terrible. The basket sits way down this mowed hayfield 714' away. The wind was blowing 25 mph directly into your face. It would have taken me 17 drives to get there. Instead, I trudged across three acres of hay. That would have been great had I only had a hungry cow or elephant to feed or I could've ridden the elephant and eaten the cow!
5. This is a normal, very unique, cool hole. It plays in the woods, giving you a break from the wind, a 240' hyser through this corridor of gnarly, wind swept trees which have grown and blown to all sorts of weird shapes and angles.
6. Back in the field now, this is a 275' annie across the hayfield to a open basket.
7. The basket is probably 350-375' away and sits about 50' behind a row of large trees and a pileup branches. Unplayable with the wind.
8. Another unplayable hole due to the wind which is a shame because the basket here is set in one of the coolest placements anywhere in the disc golf kingdom. The hole is just a straight 300' shot across the pasture. But the basket is set about 30' in this incredibly rocky outcrop with plants and bushes and the only way in is through this very narrow little pathlike entrance. Any course in the world would give their left disc to have this basket placement.
9. Back to average. 9 plays 300' into the eye of the wind with the dog park on your right and a large tree serving as a Mando to protect the pooches.

Cons:

The wind. The wind. The wind. The prevailing winds are almost blowing up from the Pacific. That's why kiting and sailboarding are such popular activities along this coast.

It is no fun trudging across a recently mowed hay field with the cut hay laying down.

Wide open holes with no obstacles in the way.

No signs.

Other Thoughts:

Sorry, this is just a poor place to build a disc golf course. Between the wind and the pasture like hayfields, I can't imagine anyone wasting their time here when Azalea Park DGC is just over 3 miles away.

On the other hand, # 5 is a cool interesting hole. And if you could somehow grab a day when the wind isn't howling, just experiencing # 8 is worth the price of admission. Speaking of admission, there is no tariff to enter the park. That would have really pissed me off.

So much potential 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 28, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-- Ocean
-- Rock outcroppings
-- Variety of holes
-- Looks like concrete tee pads have been framed to be poured

Cons:

-- I can imagine blackberries can make course painfully unplayable if not mowed back regularly -- keep up the good work!

Other Thoughts:

This little course has sooo much potential for a little nine-holer. No elevation change but a variety of holes require different shots. Beautiful #1 penalizes a shot left as it goes over the cliff into the ocean. #2 and #8 play in and around lovely large rocky outcroppings. #4, if I played it correctly, is nice and long, for an average thrower like me. #5 is short but delicate -- you have to find the gap and the shape. I had a lot of fun!
