A good stomp 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 9, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

18 holes, nice baskets, gravel tees.
A fantastically well thought out course, on a nice piece of land.

Cons:

Can get muddy.
Tics.
Some quite steep scrambling in places.

Other Thoughts:

Of the 18 holes, 9 of them are completely within the woods, and three more either begin or end in the woods. So you either get good at avoiding trees or bring an axe!

Great course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 18, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

DisCatcher baskets all the way thgough
Clear tee pads with good signage
Challenges of wooded holes mixed with elevation
Well designed course

Cons:

Long grass on the top open holes in the summer
Can get very busy on the beginner tees
If playing during garlic season (April-ish to June-ish) spotters recommended on the woodland holes (but the smell is amazing!)

Other Thoughts:

Great course layout comprising 10 beginner, 10 intermediate and 18 advanced hole course. The back 9 of the advanced is not part of the other two courses so on busy days this can be played to avoid the crowds!
Discs available for beginners at reception. Active friendly club - Yeti Disc Golf - based at this course. Again, ask at reception for a contact.

Lovely place to play 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 10, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Good Disccatcher baskets throughout (now 18 permanently)
- Gravel laid tee pads for 10 of the holes
- Great mix of wooded and open holes
- Full range of shots tested
- Beautiful location with stunning views from the top
- Three different layouts to play a beginners 10 hole green course, a very fun short course "blue" course and an excellent 18 hole main course comprising a couple of par 4's and some extremely challenging woods holes.
- Cafe and other activities on site along with toilets etc.
- Good car parking
- Disc hire available

Cons:

- Grass in the summer gets very long on the open holes
- no pads for the extra 8 holes.
- Signage and flow for the extra holes is not great, flow especially, it's difficult to find your way around by yourself.
- Tics!
- No Pro shop

Other Thoughts:

I love playing here, There is a lovely quiet/calm feel about the place. I'm a bit biased as it's the scene of my first open division win but it just starts you off so well from hole one a 100 meterish woods hole with fair but difficult lines to hit. It just feels like a real "welcome to Mendips this is what we have in store for you " hole. When you get it right and snatch the two it's such a rewarding feeling, get it wrong and you could easily start your round with a 5 or worse.

The first 4 holes through the woods are all very different and incredibly fun. The later holes on the extension course again are all very different each with a unique challenge in shot shaping, lines and elevation.

For course design alone this would get at least a 4 from me, but there are some limitations in the maintenance through the summer and the feeling of second fiddle to other activities, I wish the activity center would realise what a gem they had here and support it as currently it is the efforts of the club and designer Matt Cutler in particular that make this what it is.

The potential at Mendips is huge and I hope one day to see a multi course setup here with Matt C in as the resident pro.

Edit* As this course is based at a dry ski slope the signage follows skiing runs so Red course is tougher than blue in case of confusion!

Superb 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 24, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Gravel tees, all with maps

Great baskets all really well maintained

Knowledgeable staff in the shop area.

Really easy to follow hole to hole.

Cons:

£4.90 per round, although for the level of maintenance it's worth it.

Some of the paths between holes are almost vertical in places (2 to 3 and the route back after hole 10).

Other Thoughts:

I opted to do the Red course so that I got to see the whole course. This was possibly a little too hard for me, however I enjoyed the challenge.
I found it odd that once through the 4th hole, the holes don't follow each other so if you were playing as a family you could find someone on the green course being on the other side of the field to you if your on the blue or red courses.

Hole 1: nice easy hole along the path. Be careful of the OB left, however the smell of wild garlic as if you do miss the path makes up for your detour.

Hole 2: another reasonably flat hole. Love the basket position

Hole 3: from the red tees you need to be a mountain goat here. I ended up throwing to roughly where the blue tee is and then approaching from there. Really tough.

Hole 4: nice hole across the Ridge, difficult approach with the cross wind today.... I went a rolling!

Hole 5: Up the hill this was a tough hole. Really like the basket position on the hump though.

Hole 6: This hole is epic from the red tee. I got confused and on my 2nd shot aimed for the 16th basket. You cannot see your basket from the 2nd shot point. It's down to the right. Don't get confused like me.

Hole 7: 3 ways to go. I went up and instantly regretted it, ending up OB and almost loosing discs.
That is a tough hole

Hole 8: Nice hole along the fence line, play over the Ridge from the red tees, nice easy approach

Hole 9: Same again. Nice hole down and up the dipper. My only par here. Very nice hole.

Hole 10: insane cross wind here. Had to resort to a roller to get anywhere. Love the crossing into the woods before the basket. Nice to see the course working around the farm and not the other way round.
Slightly concerned about the barbed wire though, children beware.
