Pleasant surprise

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 7, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very nice tee signs
Cement tee pads
DD Vet baskets at the VFW
Elevation and large (may I say Mighty) Oak trees

Cons:

Some of the holes are short.
Back track to tee on hole 8

Other Thoughts:

For a small town, this is an excellent little course that appears to be getting some play.

It's not a "park" so you don't have to deal with other park users. At times there may be a VFW event, but I doubt that comes up often.

The course starts with a long open hole down the hill with creek full of water behind the basket. This is really the only hole it might come into play on if you overthrow the basket.

Hole 2 throws along the edge of the rough with a few large trees to navigate, then you have several holes using the elevation and tree lines. These are the shorter, more technical holes. But they are fun.

Hole 7 has 2 tee pads for some reason. 7a is a mostly straight shot though a grove of trees. 7b is a longer shot that is a little more open with a slight turnover shot for a right handed player. This basket is also interesting in that it is installed on an old table. Not sure what that was all about, interesting to say the least.

Then you finish up with hole 8 that has the risk of a turnover shot going down the hill or OB area around the VFW buildings.

Hole 9 plays tough for me, mostly uphill with the VFW on the left and a guardian bush in front of the basket. BTW, there are thorns in those bushes, trust me.

Would I play here again? Yes, this is one of the few little 9 hole courses that I would enjoy playing again sometime. it's not too long nor too short but has some interesting shots. I rate it about a 3.75 so I rounded it up to 4 because it is a decent little 9 hole course.

How Does One Determine If an Oak is Mighty?

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 12, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

An elevation-filled 9-hole course on the south end of Paola, your power and control will be tested throughout.

Concrete tees on all 9 holes and brand new white Veteran baskets solidify this course's status. Two tee options on 7, one a bit more open, one with more gaps to hit.

I'll dive right in on the elevation aspect, it's everywhere. Only one huge downhill smash on hole 1, but you'll still need to control your drive to not come up too short or long. The uphill jumps on 3, 4, and 6 all have trees forcing shot shapes while still requiring the right amount of power. 5, 7, and 8 have their baskets perched near a downhill drop to make your drives on those holes all the more risky.

Well placed baskets on the first four holes. The first three have guardian trees/branches somewhere within 15 feet while 4 is in its own little grove.

Cons:

No directional signage throughout… yet. It looks like the signposts are going in at the moment.

The left line of hole 9 comes pretty close to the VFW building itself. In all, 9 is probably the least good hole on the course: a power test that could leave you in a nasty evergreen if you don't get the full distance.

Backtracking almost the whole way back from 7's basket to get to hole 8 is a flaw that can't be overlooked.

Hole 7's right pad has an inside line that comes very close to the green of 6. Not a problem unless there's an event, but something to be aware of.

Other Thoughts:

The creek at the back of the property isn't in play besides possibly a bad upshot on 1, but there are trees to catch a lot of those angles.

Parking is limited, but this is a 9-hole course with not much going on at it besides the Kanza league.

If you're in the area (at Clauder's, say), definitely make this course a part of your plans. One of the better 9ers I've played to date, combining so many factors to create a unique and well-rounded challenge in only 9 holes.

Veterans at Veterans

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 30, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Mighty Oaks lives up to its name with some massive trees and hills, and a variety of shots. At a Veterans of Foreign Wars location, this course fittingly features Veteran baskets. There's also a real nice sign, at the location of the first tee.

Elevation stands out here a lot. Hardly any holes are completely flat, and there are a lot of of opportunities to have great or terrible shots as a result of the hills. From the bomber on 1, low lines on 7 and 8, and touchy shots on 5 and 6, the elevation combined with the shape of the fairway, there are a lot of options on some holes and a lot of variety. It also gives some opportunities for some big rollaways, since around 4 baskets are positioned right by some steep slopes.

The trees are massive and mighty, and do a good job taking away dumb lines that are present on other courses sometimes. Hole 3 is a spicy uphill shot where you have to throw straight, and the basket is perched behind a tree on a few others that you'll have to commit to throwing around, no through. Holes 4 and 6, the uphill shots, bring upper tree branches into play that you'll have to pick a line against.

Cons:

There's a bit of backtracking around a few holes, and there are several baskets near each other causing some navigation issues. If you have a course map, you should be fine, but it can still be confusing. At the top of one of the hills, there are also four teepads, and it's very unclear what goes where on your first time.

Only hole 1 is very long, and it's super open. None of the other holes let you air it out but with a little more danger. There are chances to throw hard uphill, and you might be throwing hard on 7 and 8, but those still aren't long holes. On that note, those two holes are very similar. Most of the more wooded shots are pretty short, and while they have a lot going on, they can probably be figured out.

Holes 5 and 6 are a little too short. They're the most wooded on the course, but they're to the point that it might not be much fun anymore. The woods in that area should have some weeds trimmed as well.

Hole 9 gives you the option to throw over the parking lot.

Other Thoughts:

This is a really solid niner. It uses all the land it's on and manages to provide a lot of uniqueness. The large hillside with the one ridge on it (where some telephone wires are) is a really nice element that the course used well.

I really wish the course could have played across the river, but getting over there is almost impossible. However, maybe the woods to the south of the course could be utilized for a few more holes? Also there weren't any tee signs when I played here, but I think there are plans to install them.
