Newbie thoughts

Reviewed: Played on:May 13, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

Park is very well kept. Fairways were freshly mowed, and the rough isn't very overgrown yet. A lot of the holes are pretty beginner friendly because there are other holes nearby. So worst case scenario, you end up on another fairway

Cons:

- Some mandos that make some of the holes kind of annoying.
- The rough isn't overgrown yet but I can see where it would be ready to lose a disc once it grows more. My buddy and I had a few cases where it took both of us a while to find a disc in the rough. Don't throw anything green.
- Its payable as a beginner but it has quite a few dog legs and narrow fairways that make it a fairly technical course
- Could use better direction to tees. In multiple occasions, we found ourselves checking multiple tee boxes and baskets to make sure we were going the right way.

Other Thoughts:

As a complete newbie, I thought this course was very nice. It was extremely well maintained. The course has a good mix of open shots and wooded shots, which kept it interesting. Despite some occasional confusion on which tee or basket is next, the course does flow well. We skipped the hole over the pond, but it didnt disrupt the flow much at all. Well definitely play here again.

You WILL lose a disc if not careful! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 12, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Coolest baskets I've ever seen! Prodigy with a unique purple color to match the local high school.
Very pretty park setting on church property. Walking trails, playground, and fishing pond.
Generally, shorter course which helps even the playing field with big throwers.
Interesting 'gimmick' holes(i.e. elevated basket on tractor tires, hit-the-green or shoot from 'penalty box').

Cons:

Possibility of losing a disc(or two) very high. If not on #5 then in most of the rough on back 9.
Hole 14 is practically unplayable due to the narrowness of the 'fairway'(we skipped it).
Hole 16's basket was literally buried in weeds. It's on a mound that hasn't been maintained.
Poison Ivy in the rough. Be careful when looking for those inevitable discs that leave the fairways!

Other Thoughts:

This is one of the prettiest courses I've played! The church does a fantastic job with the entire park and I understand the rough is intentionally kept super-high to add a challenge. However, I find it almost impossible to find discs unless you know exactly where to look. Watch where the disc falls and note a landmark. Walk straight to it and don't take your eyes off the spot! It helps to play in a group so there's many eyes to look. There will be other folks there enjoying the park so be careful of walkers and people fishing. Remember you're on church property so please be respectful.

It looks like there is work being done in the back 9. Maybe a new pond being dug out? Possibly new hole design? The back 9 is usually a soggy mess, but due to lack of rain it was bone-dry on my last visit. No mosquitos either! Bring a floater disc for Hole 5. That or make sure you can clear the pond or go the long way around.

Update(7/28/20): Whatever work was being done on the back 9 seems to have helped with the sogginess. The last few times I've played there the ground was firm(even after a rain the previous day) and the rough seems a little less 'rough'. Maybe natural grass is keeping many of the taller weeds down? It's definitely easier to find your disc(still a couple spots near impossible(the rough to the right of 18 for instance).

Beautiful but challenging 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 15, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Nice layout with large picnic shelter at the front of the course and courtyard near #18
-The fairways and grounds overall on holes 1-4 are well manicured.
-Having never played here. I did not have the challenge of the natural tee pads, but the newly installed concrete pads are very nice
-The descriptive tee signs with hooks are nice and benches throughout the course are an added benefit.
The course is nicely challenging throughout, outside of one hole- #5. The course also used nearly every last foot of the grounds

Cons:

The layout of this course is a bit odd compared to other courses around the Indy area.
-Tee 5 mandates playing over the pond. Being that it is 200+ feet from tee to basket asks that you have full control of your drive. As a beginner, I am not willing to chance a sinking disc. There is no alternate route other than to play through #6's fairway.
-Hole 7 has an odd Mando circle. Again, not beginner friendly but an interesting challenge.
-Hole 13 had a Mando tree to the right, an OB walking path just to the left, and some smaller trees in the middle makes for an extremely narrow "fairway".
-Hole 14 has a very narrow tunnel from tee to pin.

Other Thoughts:

A fun course to play overall and has some great scenery. It is very technical from holes 5+ with narrow fairways and can be great practice for control shots.
Still can't get over hole 5, but that's just me...

Northwest Community Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 16, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great Tee signs with Bag Hooks
Brand new purple Prodigy baskets. Sharp.

Shot selection: need Backhand, Forehand. Some unique Basket placements as well.

Water on 3 Holes, #4, #5 which is a carry across to the Basket, and #18 which plays near the water's edge.

Mix of lengths from 150' - 390'.

Landscaping perfect, save for an inexplicable #16 Tee, where it looked like they hadn't cleared it out yet, facing a jungle from the Tee.

Nice size gravel parking lot, big shelter.

Practice basket.

Cons:

Not a personal con to me, but others---no concrete Tee pads, but with the length being more on the short side, I don't see a need for concrete.

There are small, wooden benches set up around park, and some could present conflict in certain areas.

Other Thoughts:

I think this is a fantastic Course for newer players to really learn the game on. The variety needed in throws, would get new players trying forehand shots, and also having to try a couple bombs. And the water on #5 would probably have to be skipped until some distance is developed.

Intermediate players could play it as Deuce or Die, and just get an enjoyable Round in.

Thanks to the Bethesda Baptist Church for installing this Course!
