Not bad. Not great. Just okay with lots of potential. 2+ years

Pros:

Teepads and tee signs are great. I would ask that the tee signs are marked which position the basket is in.

The course is pretty easy to navigate and uses the available space in the park quite well.

Lots of variety and challenge even for a relatively short course.

Cons:

LOW CEILING!!!! It felt that the entire back nine was build with the rule that nothing over about 8 feet could be cut. Several holes are borderline not birdieable because you cant throw a disc the required distance 5-6 feet off of the ground the whole way. A pole saw and some tall guys armed with loppers would do this course wonders.

A growing trend in Kansas, the grass is long. For the love of god someone please mow or weed eat the fairways.

Poinson ivy in the fairways. Not a fan of this but if the fairways were manicured this wouldn't bee as big of an issue.

Other Thoughts:

This course has a lot of potential and if just a little bit more trimming was done on some of the holes I think this could be a solid 3 star course.

Pros:

Orchard DGC is a great new course, and a nice change of pace from Carey Park if you're playing disc golf in Hutchinson. It is a more challenging layout, with many of the fairways being very tight, and elevation changes on a couple.

Each hole has one concrete tee, and two pin positions. The only par 4 on the course is hole 4 when the basket is in the long position. The long pin on hole 5 is the only place you'll have a throw that plays over the pond. Temporary tee signs were laminated and posted near the tees on most holes, but a couple were missing. They had maps of each hole with pin locations and distances.

From the first hole you get a sense of the types of trees that populate most of the fairways. The width of the fairway on hole 1 is a nice alley, but don't expect to have so much room all of the way around the loop. There are pin locations that are in very close proximity to trees, and they are often difficult to approach if you don't have the correct angle. Holes 2, 3 and 4 are more open, but many of the remaining holes on the course have similar low canopy with thick and bushy branches.

Hole 2 is a slightly more open hole, except for a tall tree in the center of the fairway about halfway to the pin. The left side has plenty of airspace for a big left to right anhyzer for a righty, but is downhill from the level of the tee and the pin.

Hole 3 is a fun drive from a tee on top of a hill, along the ridge with a flat grassy bottom, before climbing the next hill to a basket at the top. Hole 4 tees from the top of that hill and covers a long flat stretch with a short pin near the pond in the open, and a long pin on fringe of the woods.

Hole 5 was in the long position when I played, and was one of the best holes in my opinion. The drive is a tunnel shot around 200 feet. Before the end of the tunnel, there is a slight drop off with the short pin at the bottom. Behind the short pin it opens up and crosses a short bridge on the edge of the pond, and the long pin is tucked under the trees on the far side of the pond.

These first few holes are a good representation of what Orchard has to offer, but there are some holes with lots of trees right out of the box. Hole 13 is very crowded near the tee with trees leaving small gaps no matter what the pin location is. Some baskets are not visible from the tee, like 17 if the pin is left side. A fence lines the left side of the fairway on 18, that could make it hard to retrieve an errant drive.

Cons:

Tee signs had been knocked down or lost on a couple of holes. They were good signs, but perhaps more permanent fixtures will be installed in the future.

There is a walking path that is near a couple of holes. My drive on hole 2 carried on the wind a bit, and I was closer to the path than I would have liked, but no one was there at the time. Hole 5 in the long position crosses the path directly at the bridge. Then you have to turn back and walk halfway up the fairway to get to hole 6.

Some players will not enjoy the very technical lines between the trees. This might be a frustrating place for a new player.

Other Thoughts:

Orchard DGC is a nice new course. It has some good terrain elements that make it a solid challenge, and fun for experienced players. Over time the lines might be better established and become a little friendlier.

It is a pretty good layout for the land that is available, and not too hard to follow once you find the first tee. A link to a good map is available on the course DGCR page. If you are in the area, it would be worth checking out.

I only played one round, but will be likely to play here again since my brother moved to Hutchinson. I scored a 58, with 5 bogies and 2 birdies. The birdies were on pretty difficult holes, which always feels good to make those really tough drives and follow up with a made putt. 12 and 13 gave me the back to back deuces. A great drive on 12 and a 25' putt right into the chains. Then a perfect flex shot on 13 that came to rest about 5' from the pin. Maybe I can trim a few of the bogies out next time, now that I am somewhat familiar with the course.
