Outdoor Putting League

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 16, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

A charming putting area designed for youngsters.

Just across the road from the playground, you can find six portable DISCatcherbaskets, six sets of colorful tee markers, and lots of carved and sculpted decor marking out the "course" that is at Otay Lakes County Park. It invites you to pull a disc out of your bag and spin some putts.

This is marked as a "youth" disc course, and certainly it is the most beginner of beginner courses. The longest hole is shorter than the edge of circle 2. For a young child, this is a nice length to haphazardly forehand at - I can imagine a 5 y.o. playing here. For grown players, it's like a putting league, but with terrain.

Speaking of, this is remarkably interesting for an all-putts course. Many holes have sculptures as obstacles in the middle of the "fairway", and others have nice downhill elevation that makes the runs a little more nervy. Other than hole (1), which should be a gimme "ace", any time the disc sticks in the basket will feel satisfying.

Obviously, this is not a place you'll lose discs, get lost, pick up ticks, or any common course frustrations. Heck, you don't even need to stretch beforehand. And if you just want to putt while the kids play on the playground, it would be easy to get away for 7 minutes and do so. It has a clear scope and executes it perfectly.

Cons:

What can I really say? It's short. It's so short, most adults won't even feel like it's a course. I had played several short, even "putter" courses before, but this took the cake. Every hole was literally a putt. You'll have to ace at least a couple out here to feel satisfied. Some brewery putting leagues might have more variety than here. Bring one disc only.

On a more serious note, the gravel slopes are quite slippery. My wife wrenched a knee walking down one steep hole. Kids better move slowly or be prepared to face the consequences.

Other Thoughts:

For a six-hole, all putts course, this is adorable. It's lovely. My two rounds here were great fun, and I managed to post a satisfactory -3 on the second. So what to rate it? On the one hand, I think 2.5 for Typical is fair. It's standard but well done. On the other hand, on the off-chance someone sees this course listed and wants to play it, I feel the need to make them think twice with a low rating. After all, anyone with a hill, basket, and one or two obstacles could adult recreate this course. So, when compared to all disc golf courses everywhere, I have to mark it as Bad for failing to embrace the fundamentals of the sport. That said, I feel very warmly and appreciate what the rangers have done with this small track of land. Keep it up, fellows!
