Good 9 Holer In Small Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 15, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

On my trip to Knoxville Courses , Powell Station Park was my first stop . I played this course at 7 in the morning , so I am oblivious to whether the Park sees a lot of foot traffic or not . When you pull into this park , the face page on DGR tells you to park in the gravel lot . The lots are so close together , I would tell you to park on the cement part of the lot at the far end , and not have to deal with people shooting gravel on your parked car later on . There is an informative nice kiosk to your right side as you pull in . Powell Station has a play and picnic area , but that part of it won't come into play on the course . I was wary on the +3 rating for a 9 hole course , Locals , please don't overrate your local course , because you will turn off the travelers and give them the negative impression that all of the courses are this way . Getting back to the course . I discovered that the tee pads are wood lined pavers , but new and in good shape . The baskets are the green prodigy and new . The signage is informative and well done . Course flow is pretty good . Even though there is a map on the kiosk , you might not need one for this course . It flows pretty well . Strangest thing on the signs . When they put the course together , it must have been part of an big anti smoking campaign in the area . On the tee signs , it will ask you a question on smoking , then give you the answer at the basket . Interesting . There is also a memorial to Travis Wegener for this course . I don't know if he had something to do with the disc golf course or disc golf in general or maybe a victim of smoking . The course itself will not wow you with length or extreme difficulty . Course designers , John Diamond and Ben Hedrick , only had so much park to work with and they used all that was given to them , and I think they did a good job . The first tee is elevated , one of the only 2 tees on the course that have a pro and am tee box ( #8 is the other ) . and it throws around a large tree formation and canopy and a hard left , 300' for the pros . #2 is the start of where the basket placement was utilized well . It is a woods throw down a path with a creek far in the brush to your left and small to medium trees to your right . The basket is tucked into the trees slightly uphill . #3 is also an elevated tee , this time you where you throw over a creek ( don't worry . It will only come into play if you griplock your drive or hit a branch on your water carry and the creek is shallow ) through a brush and branch doorway fading slightly right to a basket protected by a large tree . Only 257' but be precise . there is a nice set of wooden steps allowing you to descend to the fairway . #4 is the longest hole on the course . 331' feet to a basket set inside some woods making you not only concentrate on placing your drive , but also to be aware that the roughest of the rough on this course lines the right side of the fairway , and it is shin high and thick . If you didn't mark you disc with your eyes , you will spend a few minutes looking for it . #5 and #6 are short woods throws that both bank left , with #6 being more extreme . The basket on 6 is well placed to the right , making for a tough putt for birdie , but only if you missed all of the trees both in part of the fairway and lining both sides of it . #7 is kind of a strange 300' drive that fades right and moves very slightly uphill into a grove of shaded trees . #8 is a keeper A 265' drive down a fairway that slopes slightly downhill , which is open on the left and has a brush and treeline on the right . Do not throw your disc in that . The basket is tucked backwards in the treeline making for a real difficult birdie , and if your drive goes errant , maybe a 4 . Great hole . You ascent the same steps you used for #3 to get to #9 ( I really liked those steps ) . #9 was the weirdest of the holes on the course . To get to the basket , with a tight quarter drive ,on an elevated tee you will either have to throw over a wooden stage and sets of benches , ( maybe for small performances or talks ) or throw a real hard fade right , to the basket sitting in a set of trees 331' away , next to some benches ( strange place for them ) The course and its grounds seem to be well taken care of . This is an excellent course for newbies , casuals , or families , as well as a good warmup for the Tommy Schumpert or Victor Ashe courses . If you are a fairly strong or precise player and can throw a controlled drive 300' or so , you shouldn't get worse than a 3 on any of these holes , but it doesn't mean the that the course lacks a fun factor . I enjoyed my round . My signature hole would be #3 , followed closely by #8 .

Cons:

Cons are very few . #1 Danger of hitting disc golfer or others . #9 is the worst of it . I don't know what you do if someone there are people on the stage or benches . The tight drive you make could ricochet into them . Also , on #8 drive , you could easily hit someone on #4's tee pad or their group , or someone finishing up #3's putt . Be careful . #2 Very easy for pros and good ams . The longest of the holes are only in the 330' range . But the name of the game here is to control your drive . I may add that trash receptacles and benches are not here , except for the meeting area bench at 9's basket , but this course flows and plays fast , so it isn't a big deal . Carry out what you carry in .

Other Thoughts:

Some thought and detail went into this course . I think it achieved what it set out to . A great introductory course , or a fun course for the casuals , or people with less than 100 rounds in them , or a warmup for the way more competitive courses just miles away . The course is a keeper . My recommendation : PLAY IT and enjoy it !! It's not that far from I-75 and is a leg stretcher for the traveler , too .

Mighty Morphin' Powell Station 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 10, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Powell Station is a solid 9-hole course. Much better than I expected. And I got to learn to an important message with their disc golf-targeted PSA campaign.
- A whole lot better than I expected. After seeing the locals' over-inflated rating of Inskip, my expectations for this course were low. NOTE TO REVIEWERS: This is why ratings matter. Giving a mediocre course a high rating annoys first time players and makes one think other local courses are overrated.
- Course has a logical, sensical flow to it. #1 is an open, 300-foot layout; #2 is a wooded mid-range hole; #3 is a mid-range layout going from the woods to the open; and so forth. Having a 9-hole course give you different looks tends to (sadly) be the exception to the rule.
- A lot of work went into the smaller details. Great signage especially when different holes play close together. Quality steps on the transitions from #2 to 3 and #8 to 9. Top-notch tee signs. Solid, functioning tee pads.
- The tall rough on the open holes was effectively used. #4 & 8 wouldn't have much challenge otherwise. By at least giving you a targeted fairway, it gives players a little more to think about before throwing. As I discovered, if you land in it, you won't spot your disc until your almost on top of it.
- For average players, you must work for your birdies. Baskets are well placed on the otherwise easier holes - behind the large tree on #3; protected by smaller trees on #6 & 7 - that an average shot may not leave you a birdie putt. On #7, my tee shot landed 25 feet from the basket. The thick, impassable growth between my disc and the basket meant I had to throw a high looping shot for my birdie 'putt'.
- Except for the benches/meeting area on #9, this area is exclusively disc golfers. I played a Sunday morning and was the only car in the lot. The other park activities (playground) are all at the front of the park.

Cons:

There's not anything of consequence wrong with this course. It's achieved its mid-range, 9-hole designed layout just about as well as could be done. To pick some nits:
- One longer hole would be nice. There's nothing longer than 331 feet. Finding a way to get one hole longer than 400 feet would give the course one look it doesn't offer.
- The benches/meeting area on #9 seemed weird. Is it a mando? Why is it there? I doubt it's ever a conflict. Just pop up a mando sign.
- The sewer line on the right side of #4 has a sewer smell to it. Just don't be like me and land your disc close to it and it's a non-issue.
- Advanced players will find the course simple. They'll be on a birdie fest here. If nothing else, this course will offer a solid scoring separation. I was often settling for 3s rather than making 2s. You know which side of that divide I land.
- The course somehow seemed far away. This is my out-of-towner perspective. Even though it was only 15 minutes from my hotel, I felt like it took forever to get here. Might explain the lack of foot traffic.
- Why have alternate tees if its only on two holes? Seems like it should either be for most of them or none. Just having it on two seems like it achieves very little.

Other Thoughts:

Powell Station is a good, straight ahead course. I enjoyed my round, which is always the goal.
- There's not much variety in hole lengths. All range from 210 - 331 feet. I could have played the course with one disc and my score wouldn't have been much different than it was.
- Excellent course for casual players and beginners. Unlike Inskip, this at least has a fun factor and challenge. I'd bring first timers here to introduce them to the game.
- I really enjoyed the flow, scenery and tranquility of #2 & 3. #2 has a creek playing along the left side of the fairway and then #3 tees off on a mound on the other side of said creek. Throw in #8's basket being tucked away in that same area, and this is easily the best section of the course.
- Holes and baskets have anti-smoking messages on them. There are questions at the tees and the answers are at the baskets. You'll know you're throwing to the wrong basket if the answer doesn't match the question!
- Part of the course's charm is the drive through the small historic district. It's only a couple blocks, but your last impression before turning into the part is this quaint part of Americana. You can't help but be in a good mood by the time you step to the first tee.
- This is a solid, above average nine-hole course. I'd like to rate it higher. Objectively however, it's lacking that one challenging hole that will make it really stand out.

A little wow in Powell 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 8, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice teepads and baskets.

Hole #1 is a fairly open hole that allows a warmup before encountering holes with more trees.

Navigation seemed straight-forward, as long as you can clearly identify which basket you're throwing toward on Hole #3.

Good anti-smoking messages throughout the course.

Cons:

Hole #9 could be confusing. There isn't much of a fairway and it goes by (or through) a small outdoor theater area in order to finish the course near its starting point.

Hole #4 and Hole #7 are basically wide open shots to connect the two wooded parts of the course.

If several groups were on the course concurrently, there could be some issues. Drives on Hole #3 could endanger those on the Hole #4 teepad, for example.

Other Thoughts:

Powell Station Park is a new nine-hole course that is a nice play, especially for beginners. None of the holes are extremely long - the longest is 331 feet. Powell Station has nice amenities but could benefit from a little "beating in" on a couple holes.

Giving nine-hole courses ratings that are comparable to 18- and 27-hole courses is difficult. However, if you're heading to Victor Ashe or Tommy Schumpert for some disc golf, you might swing by Powell Station Park for a fun warmup round.
