Pros:

Powell Station Park in Knoxville offers a lot of things that most 9 holers do not:
Good tee pads - brick pavers, framed by 4X4s, good and solid.
Tee Signs - showing the hole, all necessary information and an anti-smoking message, the funding and focus of this course.
Good Baskets - the Prodigys are in good shape and a unique green colored.
Next Tee signs - just enough, where needed most.

In addition to those basics, there's also a surprising variety of holes:
3 mostly open holes, 3 with partial woods and 3 more heavily wooded.
Hole shapes were varied also, left, straight and right.
Not a lot of elevation in the park, but the elevated tees on #3 and #9 were well laid out.

While there's not a lot of variety in hole length, one at 210', two at 330' and the rest between 225' and 300', there is not a ton of room in this park, and they did stay mostly away from lost disc areas.

Cons:

#9 fairway goes right over a small stage and its bench seating. There's actually a Mando from the tee that forces you over that area, creating a right dogleg hole. Obviously, if anything is going on in that area, this hole can't be played.

Other Thoughts:

I've got a couple of 9 Holers near me, they are the closest courses to me and very convenient when I don't have time to get a full 18 in. Victor Ashe and Tommy Schumpert are both long and time consuming courses (1.5 hours at least), so this is a good alternative to get a quick round in.
Even got to talk to a local on the course and he asked if I wanted play another round, but I explained this was part of my 81 hole tour of Knoxville, so I had to keep moving.

#1 is a good opening hole, mostly open, slightly downhill, slight turn to the left. Not too long, so a good one to open up on.
#5 and #6 are the most heavily wooded, one straight and one hard to the left.
#7 is a deceptive hole, open tee shot, but the basket is set back under low hanging branches, tried to fly my upshot in through those branches and came up way short, then couldn't get enough on the putt, because of the branches.
#9 finishes pretty well, after clearing the Mando, and hopefully the branches, the basket is somewhat guarded, but plays as a somewhat soft Par 4.

Yes, if I lived on this side of Knoxville and didn't have time to play one of the longer courses, I would enjoy playing Powell Station several times a year.

Birdogey Fest 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 14, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Best tee boxes in Knoxville! I love the tight brick feel and design.
- Good signage at the tee boxes as well. The pictures of each hole are entirely accurate, but at least they give you a sense of what you're looking at. Those, paired with a few park signs near the parking lot, allow for easy navigation of the course.
- Technical challenges through the park. You will have to use multiple types of shots and pray that you won't have to use a flippy midrange to get out of a sticky situation.
- Good layout and flow to the course. The park basically runs in a big circle and only two holes gently interlap.
- As frustrating as the trees and basket placements can be, this course will undoubtedly make you a better player. I will definitely be returning to Powell Station for practicing hitting narrow drive lines.

Cons:

- There is only one basket per hole and only a couple holes have two tee boxes. Not a lot of variety here, what you see is what you get.
- Only a little bit of variety in terrain and hole length. Every hole is between 240 and 330, and all but 2 require tree threading.
- This course can be troublesome for newer and beginner players. Consecutively beating MR's into trees can definitely cause frustration for the less skilled golfers.
- I guess this bullet point can be a pro, depending on how you see it, but you won't be breaking in your bag very well. I can see where an intermediate or advanced player can knock out this whole park with just a Buzzz in less than 30 minutes.
- Although the majority of obstacles are trees, there is some heavy brush scattered around the park and a disc can get lost.
- Not the most well-groomed course, I'm curious to see what the grass and brush look like throughout the summer.

Other Thoughts:

Hole #1 is a solid birdie opportunity. The right hyzer and a lucky skip is a chance at an ace. RHBH drives can layup without too much trouble.
Hole #2 is a gentle RHFH hyzer to the right. Not a lot of distance needed, but your line off the tee only has about a 15 foot range if you want to make it under par.
Hole #3 is definitely longer than the picture makes it seem. Your drive will have to be perfectly threaded and a tough second shot follows to get you inside first circle.
Hole #4, wide open, just nuke it dead center.
Hole #5 is another tough one. This is your tightest line of about 10 feet and there is absolutely no love from trees here.
Hole #6 is a wider fairway, I play it with a Groove to get a harder turn left.
Hole #7 is again longer than the picture leads you to believe. You're wide open to the left of the fairway, so I grip it forehand and go yard.
Hole #8 is a tough one to birdie. I generally just go straight to the best of my ability for about 200 ft., turn right, and try to lay up.
Hole #9 is an anomaly. Hardly every do I see a Par 3 that's mislabeled, if anything I find Par 4's that are too short, but this will definitely challenge most players. You've got a line off the tee box about 8 feet wide and the fade right will have to come perfectly at 260 ft.

Being as objective and unbiased as possible, this is definitely an above average 9-hole course. Nonethless, it somehow remains my nemesis course. Although this course will not reqire the use of your whole bag, it will challenge you technically. One bad drive or unfortunate kick off a tree is almost an automatic bogey. In my venture through Knoxville this is definitely a 9-holer that I enjoyed and one to which I will certainly be returning!

"Cute" little course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 3, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Quick course, fun. Everything is very new, so it's in great shape.

Cons:

As stated before, #3 and #4 seem to overlap. I was the only one at the park the whole time, so I didn't run into anyone. It isn't well drained, so it was a little swampy.

Charming And Fun 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 17, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

A nice looking course with interesting and very functional tee pads, nice tee signs, and Prodigy baskets. It has mostly short to medium length holes and plays in, around and through large open fields and moderate woods. The course also offers some minor elevation changes, stairs to aid in the steep climbs and some interesting features like the old brick bridge/tunnel. The course is fun and worth a stop if passing by on I-75 for a leg stretching round.

Cons:

Navigation can be a little tricky for first-timers. There are a couple of trailblazer signs, but more may be necessary. Using the map should help. There are also some holes where it can be somewhat difficult to determine which basket to throw to from the tee, even with the signage. One hole has you throwing to a basket not even visible from the tee when the other basket that is visible seems like the logical choice. A couple of holes play near/over other park activity areas. These holes might be unplayable during peak park hours.

Other Thoughts:

A fun and challenging enough course to keep the locals happy and a quick fun play for passing travelers. The course could use a few more amenities, but it is brand new and hopefully has more improvements coming.
