Don't Throw Your Disc Into the Quarry... 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 15, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

- decent color tee signs
- concrete tees
- decent quality baskets
- well maintained with some minimal elevation change
- course designers seem to have tried to make good use of the space available

Cons:

- HUGE safety hazards: 4 holes share tees with walking path and throw over it, another throws across path
- no navigation aids, but fairly straightforward
- near school/playground which can lead to lots of traffic in park on school days in particular
- course finishes far from parking lot
- no real additional amenities
- risk of throwing disc into quarry over posted fence on several holes

Other Thoughts:

Quarry View DGC is aptly named; you play right along the private quarry boundary and will want to make sure you don't throw over the fence. There's clearly been some retrievals but it wouldn't be that fun. While the quarry certainly isn't the most scenic disc golf view I've had, the course is otherwise well maintained and the park seems well kept by Algonquin.

The major con here is the safety hazards. I understand the course designers were probably trying to save money on concrete tees, but having 4 of the 9 holes throw from the walking path is just a poor, poor design. 4, 6, 7, and 8 throw from the walking path, and 3 throws over the walking path perpendicular to it. Some of the throws have blind turns too, and with schoolchildren and walkers/joggers around, someone is bound to get nailed.

The course is otherwise fun enough, with some good minor hills and obstacles for a suburban course. I think the course designers did a pretty good job of using the space available with the exception of the safety hazards. There is one extremely short hole (3, which is barely 150') but the rest of the course is a reasonable length. I think beginners would enjoy this course but intermediate players can also have a fun round here. I'd probably try to come early in the morning when it's less likely people will be out if it were me.

There's nothing extremely unique about this course but I do think it's fun enough to be worth a visit if you're in the area. The tee signs are decent, but the baskets and concrete tees are all in great shape and Quarry View makes for a fun, quick round with a small challenge.

Waste of time 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 5, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Holes 1 and 2 are ok.

Cons:

The course is not maintained. The promo video shows a beautiful course filled with wild flowers, but really it's just a thicket of thorny weeds. At least 3 holes are located within several feet of a No Trespassing fence to the quarry. So if you're not accurate within several feet when driving you'll lose your disc. The fairways are also just narrow walkways, so basically every throw goes into the 4 foot tall thorny weeds.

Other Thoughts:

I'll not be returning to this course. It is truly abysmal.

Parking lots and tall grass and pedestrians, OH MY! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 25, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Algonquin Lakes Park is a nice subdivision park that butts up against an elementary school. The park has nice amenities like restrooms by the ballfield. The park rolls down at the edges, giving the course some elevation changes to work with.

Other than hole #3 he course design flows pretty well. The course has Mach 5's and all of the tees are either concrete or part of a paved walking path. The course has good signage.

There is some variety in the distances and a nice mix of uphill/downhill shots. It's a park style design so it doesn't really force you to throw one way of the other, but there are a lot of walking paths that you could play O.B. to mix things up.

The course uses tall grass as a design element, which is common in this area. Usually I list that as a con, but here on holes 7 and 8 they had mowed generous landing areas. That gives you a more realistic area to throw to than the usual "300' hole with a 15' strip of mowed fairway to aim at" holes you tend to see in this area. Tall grass is still not a favorite design element of mine, but it was done here pretty well.

Cons:

One of the harsh realities of our game is that it doesn't really fit well with most neighborhood park designs. We take our courses and cram 'em in there, but there are drawbacks. The drawback here is obvious, they felt the need to mount "YIELD TO PEDESTRIANS" signs under every tee sign.

Hole #1 is on a strip of land next to a parking lot on the left. Every kid/beginner who tried to throw that hole RHBH is going to n00b hyzer into the parking lot. The land even rolls that direction to help you disc roll out there. There is probably going to be a use conflict there.

Hole #3 isn't a golf shot. It's an elevated 150' shot to a basket just off a walking path. There is a lot of tall grass and not great visibility. The tee for #4 is in the general area. It just seems like they ran out of space and ideas after 8 holes and just crammed something in there to make it 9.

Once you get past hole #3, you are pretty much shooting along or across a walking path for holes #4/5/6/7. Lots and lots of pedestrian conflict. The pedestrians I ran across were friendly and curious as to what we were doing, so hopefully that will last.

Hole #9 ends behind the ballfield and is nowhere near the parking lot. The design of the park made it impossible to get the course to loop, so you just go out and then you have to walk back. It's not a terribly long walk, it just needed to be mentioned.

Other Thoughts:

In the end, Algonquin is a nice course in a nice park. If I lived there, I'd play it regularly and I'd be fine with the limitations of the site. The design isn't perfect, but they did a pretty good job given the limitations of the site. It has some safety concerns and a few holes that maybe are not a great design, but we can't all have Idlewild next to our house. It's a nice recreational course where you can have a fun round. Just remember to be considerate of other park users.
