Pros:
New 9 hole course in Sacramento area, the first to open since McClatchy in Oak Park. Reichmuth Park is a large community park located in the South Land Park area of Sacramento. It has a lighted baseball field, basketball courts, grassy picnic areas, a large 21 acre nature area, restrooms, 2 lighted tennis courts, a skate park, 2 full size soccer fields, a volleyball court, and 3 kids play areas: one spray pool, one fire truck playground, and one tot area. Into all of this the city has installed a tight and technical 9 hole that starts in the park area for hole 1 before heading into the nature area for holes 2, 3, and 4 before coming back to the park area for the last holes. Hole 1 is actually a great little hole, around 425 feet playing in the mowed and manicured park area under large oaks and over hilly swales. Holes 2, 3, and 4 are actually down in the nature area which is quite thick with vegetation. The city has carved out fairly reasonable fairways with most of the holes being less than 250 feet, but if you venture off of the fairways the rough is quite punishing. Control is a must in this area. Hole 5 and 6 are back up on the mowed grass area between the houses and the nature area. Again overshooting or off throwing into the nature area is quite hazardous. There is a drinking fountain located at the lighted tennis courts by hole 6. For hole 7 you walk back down into the nature area for one last tunnel shot throw though it. Hole 8 and 9 are back in the grass with hole 9s basket just off of hole 1s tee. This is definitely a finesse course with control and accuracy a must. There are quite a few tunnel shots where accuracy is absolutely required.
Cons:
Seasonal?: The course was put in December 2016 just before the heavy rains and it has pretty much been a swamp ever since the rain started. A little history, Reichmuth Park is actually the former site of a large lake called Munger's Lake that served the local farming community in what is now the South Land Park area. When the area was converted to housing in the latter half of the 20th century the lake and surrounding areas was filled in to prevent flooding. In 2011, the lake rose in again and flooded most of the park. This year again has turned the area into a swampy marsh. But, I can tell you that I have been in Reichmuth Park many times during the winter and early spring when it was not like this. Kids usually play soccer in the winter there every year. This will be a good summer course, and only nature knows what the wetter months will hold.
Navigation: There are DGA fiberglass tee sings at all of the holes but other than hole number have no information on them. There is really no signage to get you around the course or tell you where to go and there are some long walks between holes. You can figure out where to go with enough time, or print the map from here, but definitely a drawback.
Short: Most of the holes are easily aceable and short. Other than hole 1, which is actually a fairly decent hole, all of the holes are very short. They are at least very technical holes where if you don't have control and accuracy you can get into serious trouble.
Rough: Thick and sharp blackberry, briar thorns await you if you venture off the fairways in the slightest.
Tees. Although there are concrete tees for every hole they are a little on the small side, 3x6. There is room for run ups behind them though.
Other Thoughts:
Overall I actually found this to be a fun course when it is dry, but I can see this course being a turnoff for a lot of others. It is difficult to say who exactly this course is aimed at, as beginners and intermediates will find the rough far too punishing, and more advanced players who may initially have fun practicing mid-range shots are going to eventually get bored.
This course has been an on again, off again project for almost a decade now so it is great to finally see it installed. Reichmuth Park is also one of the home fields for Sacramento Ultimate.
