Five Hole Punch

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 27, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a scenic, short, simple 5-hole layout. Oh, you want to know more about Richmond Community College's course?
- Hole #1 has a great backdrop as you're throwing towards the lake. You'd have to go 60 feet long on a 200-foot layout for the water to be an issue. Unfortunately, the water doesn't come into play again.
- #2 & 5 are decent uphill, wooded shots. The pine trees force you to throw around or under branches. #5 has a lower ceiling, or requires a wider line. If a five-hole course can have a closing hole, this is a solid option.
- #3 and 4 exist. The baskets are visible from the tees.
- Once you find the first hole, each tee marker is easily visible from the prior hole's basket, making for easy navigation.
- If you're coming (or going) from the west, you'll drive into town on 74 Business. You'll pass the historic Great Falls Mills Ruins that have been there since, at least the late '80s (the first time I saw them on my way to the beach). The ruins gained bigger fame later on for being the site of Hootie & the Blowfish's music video for 'Old Man & Me.' That's one of the positives for this area.
- You're not far from Hinson Lake, a very fun mid-range course. In case you want to know why this region is called the Sandhills, just play hole #13 there.

Cons:

Only five holes. I don't know why it's only five holes. There's more room for a nine-hole layout here.
- Hole #3 is simply there. 125 feet and wide open. Not fun. Not challenging. Not needed.
- There's a 9-hole safari layout which shows the potential for more holes. Better yet, use the wooded area to the right of hole one or all the wooded property behind one of the campus buildings, near the walking trails.
- It's just a lazy design. It was installed without having to do any clearing or requiring any upkeep.
- No amenities here. Not that they're needed for the 10 -15 minutes you're here.

Other Thoughts:

RCC is the ultimate course bagging course. There's nothing memorable here.
- I think the appropriate reaction to this course is yawn. Unless you play in the middle of summer and temps are in the 90s, you won't have enough time to break a sweat or get the heart pumping.
- Did I mention the lake as a backdrop on #1 is pleasant? The hole itself isn't anything special.
- Jazz icon John Coltrane is from Hamlet. NASCAR's Rockingham Speedway, aka, the Rock, and Dragway are both close by. 25 people were killed in a chicken factory fire here in 1991 because the plant owners kept the emergency doors locked at all times. That's all you need to know about this area.
- Not worth the effort to stop here. Play Hinson Lake and pretend this place doesn't exist.
