Where Abysmal Meets Huge Potential

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 10, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

- beautiful piece of forested land with some limited elevation change
- tons of potential to make one of the coolest 9 hole courses in the Chicago area with some more work
- DISCatcher baskets are newer and in good shape
- good technical challenge on wooded holes 2-7

Cons:

- no tee pads (except small pink flags you can easily miss)
- no tee signs
- virtually no amenities whatsoever
- navigation is very unclear/confusing
- wooded holes are extremely overgrown and fairways are not obvious
- some of the wooded holes could get muddy during wet periods
- holes 1 and 9 are quite open and rather boring
- course is very short
- hole 9 does not end near hole 1

Other Thoughts:

Wow, this is a hard course to score. By all accounts, this is a very new course that is still being improved, so I hope I can come back some day and increase my score significantly. In the current state, it probably deserves a 0.5, but I think the huge potential here warrants a 1.

This is one of the most confusing and hard to follow courses I've played, but I see the major potential here. It snakes through a really nice piece of wooded property adjacent to the Sage YMCA, which also has a walking path passing through it. The walking path does not interfere with the disc golf space. There is some notable elevation change - nothing major, but good for this area. The lines through the woods are pretty cool, once you figure them out. There is virtually no fairway maintenance here to make it clear where to go, and the "tees" are so obscure they are easy to miss. Holes 1 and 9 are pretty boring and seem like filler holes. The entire course is very short; most of it is pitch and putt, but with a bit of technical wooded challenge. Putting a longer course through these woods would be amazing.

The "rough" on this course isn't too terrible - I put that in quotes because the whole course is essentially rough. It is a bit taller in some places, but generally doesn't entirely cover the ground and finding discs isn't too difficult. It helps that the holes are short; if you pitched discs deep into the woods that might be different. Note, there were warning signs about ticks - kind of an occupational hazard of disc golfing in my opinion, but something to be especially aware of on this wooded course.

Realistically, I don't think the baskets should have been installed just yet with the state this course was in. If you are going to come play, have realistic expectations and be prepared for patience. Since the course is so short and there are SOME markers, you can generally figure it out after awhile. A few specific hole tips: after hole 3, walk towards the walking path and you will see the flags for the hole 4 tee. On hole 8, you exit the woods after 7 and there is a marker near the curb for the YMCA's back lot. You are throwing along the ridge, with the bioswale area to the left and the basket for 8 down in the woods off to your right (after the walking path).

I'd love to see this turn into something great. In it's present state, it's going to get very little traffic and make the investment somewhat pointless. If it is eventually improved, it will be cool to see where it goes.
