Chickasha Festival of <creative safari golf> 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 6, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-good Innova baskets (With numbers! Why is this so rare?)
-nice park including walking path, plenty of parking, restrooms, swimming pool, splash pad, and a pond (it never comes into play unless you really overpower your drive on 9)
-some gentle elevation changes, used well on 3 and 6-8
-caters very well to the safari golf crowd

Cons:

-distance between first and last holes
-really open; only hole 4 tries to prevent the big hyzer
-missing signs on at least 4 holes; especially hard to know where to tee off on holes 1 (tough to find first tee), 4-5 (neither have the poles, so just look for the metal pole that used to hold the hole number and distance)
-home of Chickasha Festival of Light in the holiday season; I imagine that makes playing here tough in the afternoon/evening during late November and December

Other Thoughts:

This is a nice little course in an area that doesn't have many around. If I lived in the area, I'd play/practice here a lot. Lindsay has better designed (at least more challenging) holes, but the baskets are not as nice and the course is farther off the beaten path. Here, the baskets are great, which is always a big plus. The park hasn't been busy when I've visited, except when I stopped by for the Chickasha Festival of Light, held at this park in December.

The open nature of the course isn't particularly great for the quality of disc golf, except that it lends itself to creativity. Holes 3 through 9 are all in a large area with a few mature trees, a creek (dry or muddy when I've visited; never full of water), and some open fields. It would be very easy to make some fun, long, and challenging holes/shots here. The holes, as designed, are routine but decent for practice. As an intermediate disc golfer, I feel like I should be able to shoot an 18 through 9 holes, though I've failed each and every time.

As I mentioned, navigation can be a bit tricky and somewhat counter-intuitive. Hole 1 starts about as far as you can imagine from 9's basket, though you can easily throw to one's basket from closer to the parking area. This goes over a play area that has been empty every time I have visited. Please don't throw over kids, but if it's quiet I would highly recommend not using 1's intended tee. 4's tee is just a patch of missing grass, and 5's is about the same. I only found it because there was a local a couple holes ahead of me.

In summary, I like it better than some newer 9-holes that I've rated 2.0. Nevertheless, I'll keep it there due to the multiple missing tee signs at present, the lack of concrete tees, and the counter-intuitively long walk between start and finish. But it's fun, easy to get to if you're on I-44, and worth checking out.

easy park course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 30, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

-takes advantage of elevation, 3 downhill tee shots
-not too crowded or busy for a public park
-beginner friendly, few chances of losing a disc
-discatchers in good condition
-signs with hole number, par, and distance
-natural tees are in reasonable condition
-potential for alternative layouts and the locals seem to have an 18 hole layout

Cons:

-not much in the way of obstacles, mostly open
-missing sign on hole 5
-natural tees are a mess in wet weather
-natural tees can make the specific tee area unclear, this is a problem on hole 4
-no map for alternate layout
-walking path in play on a few holes (5, 6, 7, 8)
-beginning and end of the course are quite far apart, especially for a relatively small city park

Other Thoughts:

Shannon Springs is a very easy course that is appropriate for beginners, younger people, or someone looking for a quick round. It is mostly wide open with a few holes taking advantage of a few trees. Minor elevation change comes into play on holes 3, 7, and 8 and a small creek is in play on hole 9.

The dirt tees are not rutted and there is plenty of space next to them if you prefer to tee off from the grass. The tee on hole 4 is problematic: beside being uneven, it is unclear exactly where the tee is and a foot either direction significantly changes the tee shot given the trees right in front of the tee.

The layout mostly does a good job of staying away from busier park areas with lots of pedestrians but a walking path does come into play on several holes.

The elevation changes will make the course more fun for beginners but they are still just wide open holes. Experienced players will tear up this course and probably not enjoy it much. Safari layouts would make it more interesting and it seems that the locals have an 18 hole layout. I wish there was a map here of that layout.

Locals, beginners, and course baggers only. Schrock park nearby in Tuttle is a much better 9 hole course. If you're visiting Chickasaw, try to find some locals to show you the alternative layout.

Needs a little spice 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 15, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a beginner friendly course and your rounds should play quickly. The stones that you see in the pictures that used to make the tee pads are removed, now there is just a dirt tee.
The park offers benches and the grounds were well maintained.
Hole 1-has a playground on the left hand side, be careful here
Hole 2-wide open hole
Hole 3-downhill and wide open
Hole 4-trees in the fairway
Hole 5-has a tree to contend with off the box
Hole 6-uphill with the basket out in the open
Hole 7-downhill and plays across a draw
Hole 8-plays downhill and is a wide open shot
Hole 9-basket by a pine tree

Cons:

#5's tee marker is missing. Holes 1 and 2 would be tough to play during the Holiday season due to the Christmas lights on display.
Wind will be a factor here for sure. There aren't many trees to block it and also in the summer it will be hot, again lack of trees.
The walk from 2's basket to 3's tee is a bit long and so is the walk from 9's basket to the parking lot. This slows the flow down a bit.
Not much variety in shots here.

Other Thoughts:

This course does play around a jogging/walking trail so paying attention before you tee off would be well advised. If you look inside the bands of the baskets there is apparently an 18 hole layout. If you can figure this layout out it might help to spice things up here. For me there just isn't enough lines to be found to keep me interested. For the beginner this course hits the mark as there aren't many obstacles to frustrate you and disc loss is next to zero. For my money a better 9 hole course lies up the road in Tuttle. Still this course is ok it just needs that little extra to make it stand out.
