Chickasha Festival of <creative safari golf> 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 6, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-good Innova baskets (With numbers! Why is this so rare?)
-nice park including walking path, plenty of parking, restrooms, swimming pool, splash pad, and a pond (it never comes into play unless you really overpower your drive on 9)
-some gentle elevation changes, used well on 3 and 6-8
-caters very well to the safari golf crowd

Cons:

-distance between first and last holes
-really open; only hole 4 tries to prevent the big hyzer
-missing signs on at least 4 holes; especially hard to know where to tee off on holes 1 (tough to find first tee), 4-5 (neither have the poles, so just look for the metal pole that used to hold the hole number and distance)
-home of Chickasha Festival of Light in the holiday season; I imagine that makes playing here tough in the afternoon/evening during late November and December

Other Thoughts:

This is a nice little course in an area that doesn't have many around. If I lived in the area, I'd play/practice here a lot. Lindsay has better designed (at least more challenging) holes, but the baskets are not as nice and the course is farther off the beaten path. Here, the baskets are great, which is always a big plus. The park hasn't been busy when I've visited, except when I stopped by for the Chickasha Festival of Light, held at this park in December.

The open nature of the course isn't particularly great for the quality of disc golf, except that it lends itself to creativity. Holes 3 through 9 are all in a large area with a few mature trees, a creek (dry or muddy when I've visited; never full of water), and some open fields. It would be very easy to make some fun, long, and challenging holes/shots here. The holes, as designed, are routine but decent for practice. As an intermediate disc golfer, I feel like I should be able to shoot an 18 through 9 holes, though I've failed each and every time.

As I mentioned, navigation can be a bit tricky and somewhat counter-intuitive. Hole 1 starts about as far as you can imagine from 9's basket, though you can easily throw to one's basket from closer to the parking area. This goes over a play area that has been empty every time I have visited. Please don't throw over kids, but if it's quiet I would highly recommend not using 1's intended tee. 4's tee is just a patch of missing grass, and 5's is about the same. I only found it because there was a local a couple holes ahead of me.

In summary, I like it better than some newer 9-holes that I've rated 2.0. Nevertheless, I'll keep it there due to the multiple missing tee signs at present, the lack of concrete tees, and the counter-intuitively long walk between start and finish. But it's fun, easy to get to if you're on I-44, and worth checking out.

Decent small town course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 19, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Baskets are in good shape
Decent use of hills and tree's in the park.
Course was designed away from common park users
Enough room so there are local alternate holes if you play here regularly.

Cons:

2 tee signs missing (including hole 1 that tee's off next to the parking lot)
Course can be very muddy in a few spots
long walk from hole 9 to 1, however if you play the alternate hole to 1 basket, it is not too bad.

Other Thoughts:

Lets just get this out of the way, I freaking hate long walks between holes and even worse, between the last hole and hole 1 (or parking lot) This course has a really long walk from hole 9 to 1. I have seen worse (Lindsey park is much worse)

BUT when you take all the holes into consideration, there is a variety of shots, although not big boomers. But for a small town 9 hole course, this was about as good as it should be.

The best part about this short course is that the way the layout works, you can have alternate holes that are much longer and don't interfere with the short holes.

Best case is throwing from near the songasourus to hole 1 basket, this alternate cuts out most of the long walk. It was marked today with paint.

Oh, the "tee rocks" shown in the picture are either overgrown or gone.

easy park course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 30, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

-takes advantage of elevation, 3 downhill tee shots
-not too crowded or busy for a public park
-beginner friendly, few chances of losing a disc
-discatchers in good condition
-signs with hole number, par, and distance
-natural tees are in reasonable condition
-potential for alternative layouts and the locals seem to have an 18 hole layout

Cons:

-not much in the way of obstacles, mostly open
-missing sign on hole 5
-natural tees are a mess in wet weather
-natural tees can make the specific tee area unclear, this is a problem on hole 4
-no map for alternate layout
-walking path in play on a few holes (5, 6, 7, 8)
-beginning and end of the course are quite far apart, especially for a relatively small city park

Other Thoughts:

Shannon Springs is a very easy course that is appropriate for beginners, younger people, or someone looking for a quick round. It is mostly wide open with a few holes taking advantage of a few trees. Minor elevation change comes into play on holes 3, 7, and 8 and a small creek is in play on hole 9.

The dirt tees are not rutted and there is plenty of space next to them if you prefer to tee off from the grass. The tee on hole 4 is problematic: beside being uneven, it is unclear exactly where the tee is and a foot either direction significantly changes the tee shot given the trees right in front of the tee.

The layout mostly does a good job of staying away from busier park areas with lots of pedestrians but a walking path does come into play on several holes.

The elevation changes will make the course more fun for beginners but they are still just wide open holes. Experienced players will tear up this course and probably not enjoy it much. Safari layouts would make it more interesting and it seems that the locals have an 18 hole layout. I wish there was a map here of that layout.

Locals, beginners, and course baggers only. Schrock park nearby in Tuttle is a much better 9 hole course. If you're visiting Chickasaw, try to find some locals to show you the alternative layout.

Needs a little spice 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 15, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a beginner friendly course and your rounds should play quickly. The stones that you see in the pictures that used to make the tee pads are removed, now there is just a dirt tee.
The park offers benches and the grounds were well maintained.
Hole 1-has a playground on the left hand side, be careful here
Hole 2-wide open hole
Hole 3-downhill and wide open
Hole 4-trees in the fairway
Hole 5-has a tree to contend with off the box
Hole 6-uphill with the basket out in the open
Hole 7-downhill and plays across a draw
Hole 8-plays downhill and is a wide open shot
Hole 9-basket by a pine tree

Cons:

#5's tee marker is missing. Holes 1 and 2 would be tough to play during the Holiday season due to the Christmas lights on display.
Wind will be a factor here for sure. There aren't many trees to block it and also in the summer it will be hot, again lack of trees.
The walk from 2's basket to 3's tee is a bit long and so is the walk from 9's basket to the parking lot. This slows the flow down a bit.
Not much variety in shots here.

Other Thoughts:

This course does play around a jogging/walking trail so paying attention before you tee off would be well advised. If you look inside the bands of the baskets there is apparently an 18 hole layout. If you can figure this layout out it might help to spice things up here. For me there just isn't enough lines to be found to keep me interested. For the beginner this course hits the mark as there aren't many obstacles to frustrate you and disc loss is next to zero. For my money a better 9 hole course lies up the road in Tuttle. Still this course is ok it just needs that little extra to make it stand out.

meh... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 27, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

-If played from the long tees (which are hard to find), this course is more fun and challenging

-good signs

-good baskets

-hole lengths are OK for beginners

-beautiful, clean park!

-nice pond

Cons:

-most holes are relatively short and not challenging. They could have used the trees, elevation changes and other open areas of the park to make this course MUCH more fun. It's kind of disappointing. You can make a better round with safari golf here than the original course layout

-There is a fair amount of foot traffic around the course and the walking path does get in the way of the fairways. PLEASE LOOK BEFORE YOU THROW! Safety first!

-No tee pads

-Holes 1 & 2 are in an awkward position compared to the rest of the course. It's a long walk back from 9 to 1, but the park is nice enough that you don't mind it too much.

Other Thoughts:

I would like to see some locals remake this course into something really cool. It's worth playing if you are in town but I wouldn't go too far out of my way to play it. The 9 hole course in Tuttle is much more fun and not very far from Chickasha.

Fun in the Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 11, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great tee signs
Great baskets
Bathrooms
Never crowded
Quick enough to play twice
Plenty of parking
Well kept up
Multiple tees for most holes(longs are hard to find)
A great place to work on midrange shjots
Plenty of shade
Great park to bring family or newbies
Great park for night golf(especially right now. Christmas lights)
Alittle elevation change( not much but a little)
While you are there throw off of the dam to create your own elevation shot. You can shoot at #3, #5, #9, #8, #7. If you need a long hole try #4 or #6 from the dam. Wow.

Favorite hole(s): #4, #9

Cons:

Natural tees
Not much in the way of a challenge
Walking path is in play on a few holes
Transition from 2-3 (walk across the street and parking lot to behind the dam.)
Could easily have had a couple of longer holes
Not very many trees in play

Other Thoughts:

This is a fun little 9-hole course. It calls me back everytime I am in Chickasha. Make the stop if you happen to be in the area. But don't travel very far just to play this course. If you come you will enjoy yourself and relax like you wouldn't believe. While you're there feed the ducks or go fishing. Why not?

All in all lots of fun. At Christmas time the main park is full of light displays but it doesn't affect the DG much. On hole one (the giant tree) and two just be careful. The rest of the course is not affected at all.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 29, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

This small course is set in a beautiful municipal park. It has a large lake with lots of geese and ducks, exercise trails, playground equipment for the kids, and barbeque pits and picnic tables for weekend cookouts.
The holes are well marked with easy to see signs, complete with hole number, distance, and par. And the baskets are all new and shiny. The course is very easy to navigate, and it provides for a restful recreational round. Several shady spots, adorned with nice benches, await for your resting needs.
This a great park to bring the family and to play a recreational game with your children. I also think that this park would be a good introductory course to those that are unschooled in the sport. The manicured grass and trimmed sidewalks make for an exceptionally appealing park.

Cons:

The course itself...

No challenge to any golfers other than children and adults trying the sport for the first time. Mostly, holes were a short, straight, or semi-straight shot to the basket with very little in the way of obstacles or challenges.
There was obviously a lot of work done installing something analagous to a tee pad. Unfortunately, the pads they put in will serve more as a danger to spraining ankles than as a teeing suface usable by disc golfers.
The course crosses over the jogging path a number of times. It was light enough today for it not to matter, but I can envision times that discing would be difficult.
Where you end up at the completion of hole #9, is a long walk back to where hole # 1 starts again.

Other Thoughts:

I enjoyed a relaxing game there this afternoon. The setting was extremely scenic, which made the course look even more attractive. There were some small changes in elevation, although nothing dramatic. Just a gentle downhill run on holes 7 and 8.
When you finish hole #2, the tee for #3 can be found across the street near the north east corner of the lake. The fitness trail runs around the area north of the lake and the remaining holes follow it.
The course was very well taken care of and It was a pleasure to play, but there's nothing about that course that could be called a challenge. Don't let that keep you away though. It deservers as much support as we can give it. Bring the family or some friends that are new to golf and enjoy some approach practice or make a couple Ace Runs.
