Tiny Disc Golf Deep in the Heart of Kansas

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 12, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

- nicely maintained park in most ways
- signature Kansas Dynamic Disc baskets in great shape
- some tree obstacles add some limited challenge
- good they didn't try to pack more baskets into this small park

Cons:

- natural tees are a bit rutted out in places and can be very hard to find
- very short and only 6 holes
- almost entirely flat
- weird combination of beginner openness and distance with some major hazards with river next to park
- navigation is pretty unclear for such a short course
- doesn't make use of more prime land adjacent to course
- no real unique qualities
- no notable amenities

Other Thoughts:

Shunga Glen is another one of those courses where there's not a ton to discuss. In general, it's set in a nice park that seems well maintained. I suspect this course was made with beginners in mind, and keeping that in perspective, it's not necessarily a bad course - it's short, it's easy, and it's an introduction to disc golf without many aspects to add real challenge. With that said, anyone beyond a complete novice is going to get bored here quickly.

I'll admit I chose to bag this as I had to head through Topeka anyway on the way from Kansas up to Omaha - why not bag another course that would only take 15-20 minutes to play? To top it off, you can catch a glimpse of the Kansas State Capitol nearby.

The baskets are top quality, and every course in Kansas seems to be loyal to Dynamic Discs, who makes very nice baskets. It only makes sense, as this course is (relatively speaking) spitting distance from Emporia. I wish the tees were as good. Natural tees are ok on brand new courses and those with almost no use as well as they are marked very clearly - in just about all other cases, they're awful. Even with some wear and the UDisc smart layout, I never found the tee for hole 5, and a few of these were surprisingly hard to find. This is frustrating for me and will be frustrating for newer players as well. If you're going to set up a course, at least put a post in the ground or something.

The holes here are extremely short, and it is a small park, so I'm glad they didn't try to fit a full 9. Hole 2 has some more intrigue with trees and some shot shaping, and holes 3 and 4 run some surprisingly high risk of shanking a shot into the creek, which didn't seem beginner friendly at all. Otherwise, this is a fine course for beginners but has nothing really unique going for it. Bag it if you want; it will be quick, but I would not go out of my way to stop here for any reason. About the only other plus is it has its own parking lot I guess.

Little Shunga Park

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 2, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Shunga Glen has everything you would expect of a park-style course in Topeka - decent hole design, good scenery, poorly-marked tees, and... lost disc potential. For being a super short course, it's actually kind of fun.

This course makes up for its lack of distance with some cleverly-placed trees. Hole 6 is a fairly tight and spicy tunnel shot, while hole 1 has one guardian tree. Hole 2 is a bit of a dogleg right.

Holes 4 and 5 are more open, offering more variety. They also play down, then back up a small hill.

Cons:

Being only six holes, there's a lot this course doesn't have. It's just so tiny that you'll miss any of the features if you're not paying attention. The holes are really short and not super tight

The tees are dirt and sometimes marked by white bricks in the ground, and are hard to find even with a GPS map. Maybe that gives you a chance to play safari layouts to try to get to 18 holes.

In some ways, this is a perfect course for beginners, but a shank can put you in the river on 3 or 4, and hole 2 is actually kinda hard. I can imagine a beginner hitting every tree available on hole 6, but that is kind of the point of the hole.

Other Thoughts:

I just want to toss out that Shunga Glen Park is one of the best park names I've ever seen. The area the course is in just looks like a glen. Although it's technically not a valley, it is narrow.

I would like the course to cross the bridge after hole 4 and have three open holes on the other side of the park, just to get to nine holes.

The course slightly favors shots that finish right. It's really only holes 2 and 3 that are this way, but that is a third of the course.

100 - Intro to Disc Golf

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 27, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Tucked away from the busyness of the Kansas Capitol, this small park holds a near-perfect beginner course.

Six like-new DD Patriot baskets set around the mature trees, all the main shots will be shown off here: 1's basket is behind a large tree; 2 is around a bend to the right; 3 is very short but in a clump of grouped trees; 4 is downhill in the open; 5 is back uphill and in the woods; and 6 has two trees to navigate to the left, the right, or split the gap.

The course is so good for beginners because it shows all the main shots in a beginner-friendly environment. The longest hole is 230 and that's the downhill. Hole 2 will probably be the toughest get for a beginner as most start out with righty backhand, but that hole shape is one they'll have to learn eventually.

Cons:

The tee areas are dirt with no real marking. I found a line of bricks buried where 6's tee should be and the dirt was worn behind them, but apart from that it was just dirt patches to tee from. I couldn't find the tee of 5, so I just estimated off of the Udisc map.

For the more advanced players, this course doesn't offer much besides ace runs and the chance to go 6 for 6. Which might be fun, but as an out-of-towner I don't see myself coming back

Other Thoughts:

With 6 holes there isn't a lot to say about this course. It won't be a destination for many people outside of Topeka, but those closer can get some enjoyment out of repeat trips. It does the job as a beginner course and some tees being poured would round out the experience. I would go back to try and improve on my score, but there's not much else for the experienced player to take away from the course except maybe an ace.

Smaller Shunga 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 4, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This 6-hole course makes good use of the available land. Baskets are brand-new, white Dynamic Veterans. There is actually good shot variety for only being 6 holes. Holes 4 and 5 are both pretty wide open, but the rest play around or through some big, mature trees. Hole 1 plays right to left, 2 plays left to right, 3-5 you can attack however you want, and 6 is a tunnel shot. Hole 3 has a really interesting green as the pin is between six trees. A playground, picnic shelter, basketball court, bench, trash can, and water fountain are also on site. Appears to be well maintained.

Cons:

The tees are natural, and I only found the orange feathers that mark them on 2 or 3 holes. No tee signs. Several tees are pretty close to the previous pin. Holes 4 and 5 pretty much share a fairway. There is some disc loss potential if you shank it into the woods on 2 or into the creek on 3 (and maybe deep on 4).

Other Thoughts:

There is some elevation change, but nothing major. Holes 1 and 2 are both slightly uphill and hole 4 throws across a valley/drainage channel. I think 5 would be more interesting if the pin was like 20 ft shorter (and maybe slightly lefter) so that it would be closer to the down slope of the drainage channel (which is completely dry).

According to UDisc, the holes range from 134 to 224 ft.

If you don't have time for a full eighteen, this would be a great place to come instead. It took me like 15 minutes to play a round. This also makes it prime pickings for coursebaggers.
