Come for the Latitude 64 baskets, stay for the ace on woodchips! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 25, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Spencer Township Park is a relatively large multi-use area that is well off the beaten path. It's a 30-45 minute drive northeast of Grand Rapids, MI. Visitors to the park have many amenities to choose from including a basketball court, playground, and 9-hole disc golf course.

The nine baskets here are Latitude 64 Pro models. According to the course directory, this is the only course in Michigan and one of only 23 in the United States with Latitude 64 baskets. Given that I had to correct the entry on the info page for this course, I am slightly skeptical of those numbers - but it's definitely the only course out of the 60ish I have played that has them. Anyways, these baskets are bright yellow - a less fluorescent yellow than the yellow banded DISCatchers, but still easy to spot. They are all in like-new condition, and I imagine they will stay that way for a while as I don't think this course gets much play.

There are a couple of nice holes here. The ending hole 9 is my favorite. It plays across an open area of the park down a slight incline, parallel to the road and basketball court (but far enough away that landing in either would take a lot of wind or a very errant throw). There are a couple of trees preventing a direct line to the basket, and a nice clump of larger trees guarding it. Listed as 374' here, it is the longest hole on the course.

Hole 2 is also memorable. It plays only 100' or so along a wide path, with thick brush on both sides. The ground here is covered in woodchips. The path curls slightly to the left, setting up an ideal ace attempt for RHBH players. If you aced this hole you would definitely remember it.

There is a porta potty on site near the parking lot/first tee.

Cons:

On hole 4 the playground could come into play, and on hole 6 the basketball court could. This park is likely not busy very often, but if it were there could be some safety issues.

Hole 3 is interesting, but probably out of place here. Like hole 2, this hole plays along a woodchip-covered path. However, the path here is narrower and also goes down a moderate incline for the first 100' or so off the tee - only to kink to the right and continue another 150' or so before opening up to the basket. Each side of the path is thick brush, on terrain that actually slopes downward away from the path on both sides. This is a recipe for frustration (and possibly a lost disc) for the local recreational players who are most likely to visit a course like this regularly. I threw a double bogey on this hole myself during my most recent round. The thick brush is in play again on holes 5 and 7.

The remaining holes not discussed above are pretty much standard issue multi-use park throws. The designers generally did a good job with pin placement to at least have a couple trees between each tee and basket, but there isn't enough length or elevation here to really challenge better DG'ers.

The tees are just natural and marked by wood painted posts. Some of the posts have a hole number on them but a few were missing when I played. Also, the hole numbers that were present were not always aligned to face the basket.

There is a little kiosk at the parking lot but it's not for disc golf. Use the map here for navigation. Speaking of which, the navigation is a little tricky in spots. Hole 6's tee post is by hole 4's basket and hole 9's tee post is by hole 6's basket so you could easily skip holes 5, 7, and 8 unintentionally. Hole 2 is located well into the woods, and without the map you might not think to walk on the path into the woods from hole 1.

Other Thoughts:

If hole 3 was cleared out a bit and some signage was added, I would probably increase my rating to a 1.5.

If you are really curious about Latitude 64 baskets and want to try them out at a low traffic course, this place may be for you! Otherwise you can probably skip it.

Choppy flow, not very challenging, still fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 25, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

--Disc golf way out in BFE!
--Township employees were friendly and made a copy of the map for me
--1, 3, 4, 6, 9 are quality holes
--nice baskets with numbers (although you have to be about 10 feet away to read them)
--good use of the elevation

Cons:

--#2 is only about 100 feet
--#5, 7 and 8 are very short too, maybe 150'
--Tees are just posts with a number (#9 was missing its number)
--Map required first time you play for sure
--The layout is kind of wonky and has you backtracking and walking quite a ways to get to the next tee

Other Thoughts:

First tee is at the edge of the parking lot between the pavilion and the township office. Building looms to the left and there's a telephone pole straight in front. Take the mulch path up the hill into the woods for #2 which I really hope they extend somehow. #3 starts high and you can't see the basket. If you go short, right and into the woods here, it's thick and nasty. #4 has a few trees that give it some challenge. Also, the playground is lurking. #5 is very short but trees keep it from being too simple. Backtrack to #6 tee which is by the basketball court. #6 is pretty open and decent length.#7 tee is a few hundred feet away on the NE side of the maintenance building. Don't be fooled by the #9 tee which is really close to the #6 basket and is missing the number. #7 is another short one with trees protecting it. #8 is a little longer but still pretty plain. Head back across the parking lot to the #9 tee. A nice long open hole to finish. It runs right along Meddler and it would be pretty easy to lose one in the road.
The map they gave me says "Still under construction". I hope it means changing 2, 5, 7 and 8. Still nice to have a course in the area.
