Pros:
Spring Grove Plantation is a neighborhood, family-friendly, 9-hole layout. If you want to introduce newcomers to the game, practice your game, or just play a quick round or 3, you can take advantage if you live close by.
- I'll give the course designer credit. For such a small piece of land, and for it being essentially flat and wide-open, this is a good layout. Seven of the nine holes are in a field that's smaller than two acres. The further reaches of the course, from #1's tee to #3's basket, only span 500 feet.
- Course's challenge is almost exclusively baskets placed behind or near the sparse tree coverage. The only two holes that would pose challenge or angst for beginners & kids are #3 & 4 as the former plays over water (although you can throw left the entire time) and the latter's fairway borders the same pond.
- Outside of those two holes, this is the course-type you want to use for kids and beginners. The nine holes average a modest 211 feet. If you skip #3 & 4, anyone can play this course with one or two discs. Anyone who's ever thrown a frisbee in their life without tossing it straight into the ground should be able to make some good throws here and (hopefully) be encouraged about their round.
- Baskets are in great shape. They're well marked. That said, with 7 baskets in the same field, you can make your own layout. You have young kids who can't throw 200 feet? Make your own layout with 100-foot holes.
- Course is good for a quick round. For an average player, you're knocking this out in 15 minutes or less. Or, spend more time here to practice approach shots and/or putting.
Cons:
Course isn't meant to be challenging. If you've got a disc golf bag, you're above this course's intended skill level. So, keep that in mind when coming here to play or seeing ratings for the course.
- As much as I enjoyed #3 and 4, they seem to be out of place. If this course gets most of its traffic from kids and families in the neighborhood, it seems *interesting* to have water come into play on 2 holes. Maybe it's easy to retrieve discs from the water. I don't know. I just picture many players being the type who buy the beginner three pack.
- The layout will present challenges if the course is even slightly busy. You know, that whole 7 baskets/fairways in one small field. There was one duo finishing up when I was teeing off. I had to wait for them to throw on #8 before I teed off on #1. Even with two or three different groups playing, you'd need to keep an eye out for flying discs.
- Tees are small, wood-framed gravel pits. Most players won't need a run-up so it shouldn't be an issue. If you insist on a run-up, just tee off next to the box.
- I do not know the logistics of whether the course is open to non-neighborhood members. I played a December winter afternoon and the only other players all drove up. I'd think if you're not a large group of players, and aren't making a scene (loud, smoking, etc.), you're most likely fine.
Other Thoughts:
Spring Grove Plantation is good for what it is. It's appealing to beginners/casual players and it's good for those who live further away from Charleston. My in-laws live barely 5 minutes away, so this is now the closest course for me when visiting.
- For the 7 holes in the same field, there's very little to separate them. The best of this lot is #2 in that you have a slight dogleg left curving around a larger tree. Otherwise, you're throwing around or over the occasional palmetto tree with some holes playing slightly uphill or downhill.
- If I lived in the neighborhood, I'd practice here a lot. Shoot, I might finally become a decent putter. The other appeal for this course would be if you're treating it as an ace-race layout. Play a couple rounds here, make runs at the basket each hole, and you're bound to get an ace, hit the basket, or come oh-so-close.
- The course's biggest obstacle here will be wind. You'll get some breezes kicking in that could present some challenges.
- You're 15 minutes to the Naval Weapons Station and 25 minutes to Park Circle. Those are obviously better options. This is a simple, basic, ace-run layout and one fun water hole. Excellent for what it is.
